Ioth’liisi – Holy Incense of the Nephilim

HARK, Brothers and Sisters. I am the thurifer of Alemdrom – he who makes, and blesses, your incense. I seek to spread the practice to you all for when my hands become less nimble, and my joints too old. Such a time nears dreadfully close.
INCENSE is our breath of devotion. It symbolises the fragrancy of a virtuous life; it both grounds you and uplifts you. In its preparation of grinding, blending, and rolling, it itself is a purification of the mind, body, and spirit – too, is it used to purify your surroundings and space before a prayer or offering. In this defiled world, the flesh is inevitably accompanied by odor and the vision and soul are naturally hampered by darkness. To resolve this, we use our flame to maintain the hearth, to light our halls, and keep that which purifies them – incense – burning.
Incense symbolises diligence and impermanence; for its smoke is inclined ever upwards, and its body burns to ash, a fleeting form akin to our own. It burns with our intention, our conviction, as an offering to those who have come before us – our brothers and sisters, and the King Who is. This is why it is essential in our prayers and offerings, and ought never to be forgotten, nor should the art of its making.

Varieties
– Ir'malhic – are sticks of incense, the first type which most often comes to mind. It is a paste (which varies in composition) surrounded by a flammable core, like bamboo.
– Wiq – are cones or tall mounds of incense paste, which produce more smoke and a stronger scent, burning longer due to their size.
– Vorhal – are dusts and resins contained upon either burning charcoal or within small bowls made of dung & resin (which may be burnt on its own). These smell the strongest, and are used in larger areas, most often contained in censers.
INGREDIENTS you may consider differ from person to person. Some simply dislike the smell of one, but like another. The ones which I use most often (and are most available in the Tor) are Sandalwood, Ashwood, Kindlefen (its leaves and flowers), Myrrh, Juniper, Cinnamon, Clove, Cardamom, Saffron, Nutmeg, Ginger, Jasmine, and Elemi. Most alchemical herbs ought to be avoided (like Diddyfunkle, however tempting) due to their adverse effects on consumption or inhalation.
FIRST, combine the desired herbs and woods in a mortar and pestle. If certain ingredients are too dry, Amberridle may be added to ensure the mixture will stick to its flammable core; Barrier Bush, powdered, is also beneficial to add to prevent moulding.
NEXT, begin kneading in your binding agent; plant resin or Amberridle. It will form a cohesive dough; malleable but not sticky, which holds its shape. Roll it over a flammable core, such as bamboo, or pinch this mixture into cones.
OPTIONALLY, prepare Kindlefen to be dusted atop it. It has a cinnamon-y scent, and many of our brothers and sisters have taken a liking to it, something our volcanic lands have provided to us. It is sacred. Be wary of adding too much, as its scent can become overbearing. When done correctly, your incense will produce more, and more dense, smoke than normal.
“Yol los lok, su’um los voth.
Zeymah nau voth tol,
Zu’u los thu’um fen kos tol.
Lok sahrot, los sahrot, voth los sahrot.”
BLESSING may be done in a variety of ways. Those who are capable – particularly Ordained – may offer such prayers in Draconic. This, however, is ultimately personal, and many ways a Seeker may bless their incense work just as well. It is about intention.
LASTLY, store them to dry. It has been suggested that incense (particularly incense made to be used in ceremonies) ought to be stored in golden boxes or vases, for such a material is sacred. But incense meant to improve the smell of rooms may simply be kept in a good, airtight box or jar.
