Improved Electricity Guide

Electricity:

Basic Understandings:

Electrical Evocation is the arcane magic form whereby a mage creates Electrical bolts for his or her purposes. Unlike other types of Evocation electrical bolts is intended to be much more difficult to control due to its high speed and high energy nature. Mages who specialize in electrical evocation will be able to form electrical bolts and streams of electricity to electrocute their targets. However, electrical evocation requires much more energy than for example fire and therefore a single electrical bolt requires much more energy than a fireball. This however is made up for by the fact the lightning bolt is somewhat equal in power to the two fireballs which could be made in the same time period.

Strengths:

  • An electrical evocationist is capable of producing powerful electrical bolts

  • Bolts may travel from any point to point with speed and reliable accuracy.

Weaknesses:

  • Electrical evocation takes a greater amount of time to produce a bolt than other types of evocation

  • Electrical evocation is dangerous to learn and during some phases of learning the mage can be incapable of producing any spark which will not injure themselves.

Roleplaying Guidelines - (credits to Kalenz, somewhat edited by Lanader.):

(This part could use some more work and revision.)

Electrical Evocation is a very difficult subtype to learn, and even cast. Due to the vast amount of time/effort that is required for a simple bolt, it is harder to learn compared to other subtypes. Although, as you progress in tiers, it becomes much easier to create bolts, although this only applies to the very high tier-magic users. After they begin to have more of an understanding of electrical evocation, they will be able to cast different high-powered bolts, and utilize electrical magic in other forms. The more they practice and learn, and advance in tiers, the more powerful bolts they will be able to cast. Eventually they will even be able to conjure a "call-down" or a bolt of electricity that comes from overhead.

Another way they can cast electricity magic is having a stream of electricity from their hands. It is nowhere near the same power as a high powered bolt, but can do a lot of damage if mastered correctly. It takes a near mastered electric evocationist to correctly utilize this technique. It is a constant stream of sparks, but it gets weaker the longer the stream is. If you have a stream for 5 seconds, it would be powerful, but if you kept it going for say, 15 seconds, the stream would eventually die or extremely weaken.

The more practice you have with Electricity Evocation, the more powerful your bolts and streams will be. It takes mostly practice to master control after you have grasped the basics. But if a user wishes to cast multiple bolts over a small time period, then they would would need to work on their connection with the void. There are also high chances of your spell failing, or even losing control of the electricity (creating too much electricity, like a surge, or creating too little). This is why electricity users need to manage their role play and not just succeed every time they cast, unless it is a properly mastered spell.

Roleplay examples!

(Tier 4 user.)

Jennifer stands attempting to shock a wooden block but her shock is redirected by a near by anvil.

Jennifer stands her hands outstretched in front of her.

Her eyes fix on her target - The wooden block. Static slowly begins building.

Small sparks begin to appear inches from her hands, heat can be felt from her hands.

Suddenly the electrical tension builds and a bolt is sent outwards it rips through the air but suddenly turns.

The bolt buries itself into the anvil, small blue sparks can be seen flickering from it for a few moments and then nothing.

(A tier 5 user.)

Averroa looks up to the massive orc in front of him. The cool winter makes water condense as the orc exhales blowing in her face.

Averroa coughs and steps back slightly.

"H-hello... would you... erm... mind backin' aways a bit, aye?" She says politely

The Orc lumbers forward "Lunch" he mutters

Averroa scrambles back, her eyes fix on the orc.

"N-now n-now... No need t' get all angry..." she stutters

Aveorra outstretches her hands.

"Nub" the orc replies in a monotone fashion.

Averroa focuses, a charge slowly begins building.

She lies "Err... I-I'm good friends with ye R-Rex! He'll be righ' awful upse' if you g-g-gobbled up his good f-friend A-Averroa..."

The orc pauses for a moment in thought.

Aveorra takes this moment, refocusing on the charge and building it more.

"Yu nub rendz!" He mutters "Me flat latz"

Averroa's sparks slowly emerge, they flash, dancing inches infront of her hands as the charge continues to build.

"Wait! Just a... moment..."

The Orc stands stupidly in amazement, unsure of what is about to occur.

Suddenly a bright flash shoots from Averroa, streaming from her hands, as if they are consistent sparks, running straight into the orc. Each spark slowly got weaker until it died down.

The electrical sparks, rapidly travelling towards him, strikes and the orc stumbles back and falls to the ground.

A slight scent of burnt flesh quickly rises into the air.

Averroa's mind reels for a moment as she recovers from the strike, where she is very vulnerable at this point.

The orc lies on the ground, barely conscious.

"You nasty brute; goin' 'round bullyin' poor l'il 'arflin's! I 'ope you 'ave 'orrid dreams! About rotten cabbages, or somethin'!" she mutters before walking away

(A tier 2 user.)

Albus walks into Oren, the cool night air biting his skin.

Albus shivers for a moment before continuing on his way.

Winding through the streets eventually Albus finds his way to the palace, the stone walls rise high above the low ground.

Guard Gerome has fallen asleep at his post, his bow at his side.

Albus walks up behind him, his hands extended out, hovering inches over the guard's clothing.

Albus calms his mind, his eyes fixed upon the spot he intends to shock.

Albus envisions the charge building, fibers on Gerome's clothing lift slightly as it builds.

Suddenly a bright light flashes from Albus's hands, electricity jumps towards Gerome as the medium intensity shock rips its way through his body.

Gerome stands suddenly awoken by the shock.

Albus mutters "Not... Strong enough" and turns to a run.

Gerome looks about dazed as Albus gets away.

"Fecker" he swears as he sees a flicks of Albus's cloak as he turns the corner.

Red Lines:

  • Using actual elements that are in the real world, not drawn from the void would be considered power gaming.
  • If an continous line of three iron/gold blocks (or a mix between) is nearby while the user is casting electricity, or a lot of an object that would conduct your spell, you cannot simply ignore this object. This would be considered powergaming, as normally the electricity would change it's directions towards the row of iron/gold, and not your target.

A Recommended Progression:

Reaching Tier 1:

When you begin to learn magic, you will start a Tier 1. At that point in time, you are unable to cast any form of magic unless you have some sort of experience and have connected to the void. At this tier you will learn how to connect to the void, and then research electricity as an element itself. Connecting to the void will take perhaps even years of practice, and once completed, you may still have some difficulty. Researching electricity would consist of practically finding any sort of detail and then taking note of it.

Reaching Tier 2:

After their advancement from tier 1, and their connection to the void, they can now create a multitude of sparks and perhaps an even minor bolt, albeit difficult to control till towards the end of Tier 2.  Even though they can create sparks, users at this tier may have an overload in which the sparks will practically burst outwards towards the conjurer. In this tier they will need heavy loads of practice in order to become more proficient with a minor bolt.

Reaching Tier 3:

In this tier they can finally create a full powered bolt withought major troubles, and have full proficiency. At this point they can now create streams of electricity, though they will simply spark and singe the target, rather then cause major damage. With this tier, they are novice mages.

Reaching Tier 4:

Now, the electrical evocation users can create the "call-down" of electricity, aka a bolt from a high point in the sky. They can create multiple bolts in a shorter time, although a fire evocationist could create fireballs in an even shorter time. The call-down is not very proficient, and will rarely land on the user's target.  In this tier, they can create great streams of electricity that will do some good damage (burns, etc.) They are very proficient with the bolts now.

Is it possible for the lightning/sparks to be a different color? Like depending on the person's personality or whatnot?

Eh.... Technically, no, though no one is going to stop you, as it affects nothing.

I would not suggest it, personally. Anything I've heard close to that would be from Shade-Magic tainting the conjurations of an evocationist, turning the element into a darker or black version of itself.

Is tier 5 not on the list for a reason? (At the bottom, which it notes all the tiers)

Because it really isn't needed. The only difference between T4 and T5 is that you can do stuff quicker and with expending less mana or energy. You gain no new abilities with T4 -> T5.

Will the electricity be stronger/weaker depending on your prior experience?

Not really, no. If you were already a mage, the only difference would be that you don't need to spend time to learn to connect to the void.

I thought this was going to be a redstone tutorial.

How long would it take for one to connect to the void (in real time)? I IRP (and OOC) talked to the only evocationist I found (although he was an Earth Evocationist) and he said only a few IRL days, but I would like better clarification.

Are you asking for the first connection or when you've mastered magic already?
