Fredfort (jens6851) 283 Share Posted January 18, 2014 T1 - Combat Hello! And welcome to a roleplay guide on how to actually fight through your characters actions and not through mouse clicking! Okay.. That may have had a rather rude scent to it. But lets ignore that for now and get on with it? Forgive me? Thanks. Lets get on with it then! The whole reason for the writing of this is that I for a day or two ago had some of my first roleplay combat for months on one of my characters. And was actually quite impressed by the fact that no one knew about good old T1. And after some pondering and what not I quickly realized that I actually haven't seen any T1 combat threads here on the forum or any guides for around a year or so. So here I am to give you my view of the T1 combat system and hopefully also give you a way to act in roleplay when confronted with RP combat. AND inspire some to start combat threads here on the forums them very selves! Before we really start I would like to point out to all the old schoolers that are very familar to T1 that this is just a sort of mix between the sort of roleplay combat I've had and T1. Sometimes you can call a spade a shovel, as long as it makes its purpose more obvious. So T1 and any roleplay combat for that matter is most of the time focused around a textual environment based "game" that uses logic, precision and detail. These three things are the main and key factors behind combat roleplay. What is also very important is ones ability to be honorable and fair. T1 is a turn-based system which allows both parties to make equal decisions for their characters as they act against each other. T1 is also best played out between two people. The more people that join the harder it becomes to keep track on all details and take everyones actions into account. These actions can be everything your heart desires, yet all of them can be placed into four categories: Preparation, Attacking, Defense and making Connection. Subcategories of these could be Counter Attack or Follow up attack. A counter would be able to be made on a succeeded defense move, if the situation gives space to such a counter. A follow up would be on a succeeded attack and if the opponent is having trouble defending themselves. I'll quote "Remæus" from a very known roleplay forum. As he have a very good description of how the turn based system works. The fight is split in to 'tiers' which often consist of some/all of the aforementioned turns. A tier begins when a prep or attack is posted and ends when either a successful defense or connect is posted. Link to Remæus' account on roleplaygateway can be found here:http://www.roleplaygateway.com/member/Remæus/ So as already said the fight is split into levels of action, tiers so to speak. I'll casually bring you through a fabricated fight of mine to shed some light on these turns. Meanwhile I will also try to comment and put words to my own actions, explaining them even further. First however I'll like to point out a few quick rules for myself and you to remember. When fighting a T1 you: 1. Cannot auto hit, it is up to the targeted to judge if the attack is hit and the effects of said attack. Yet it is up to the attacker to make sure that the consequences of a full attack is made clear. 2. Have to explain yourself in detail and use logic. Follow by the rules of metagaming and powergaming. IMPORTANT Quote: " the more detail that someone is willing to place into an attack, the more willing they are that the attack should connect. I'm not making the age-old lecture that "Prep = Power," because that's bogus. Prep simply reflects the effort going into the attack being thrown. And there is nothing more irritating to a veteran roleplayer than having a three-line punch avoided by a six-word evade. An attack directed at someone should at least be responded to with equal or greater effort on the defender's part, and the only good way to measure this is by a general word count. It's not letter-counting, it's called courtesy." 3.Keep yourself in character and think LOGICAL. It is important that you do not try to win, but try to have fun and create a memory worthy event for all participants. 4. Upon first starting the “match” you’ll need to describe your character down to every little detail. This includes what they’re able to do and what sort of weapons they’re carrying.. Magical powers.. Etc. Etc.This step is very important. Also. Remember. Keep it logical. Don’t carry five bastard swords and hundred throwing knives. A good tip is to link a character sheet to your opponent. 5.It is a really good idea to plan out where you are fighting. If there’s anything you can use to your own advantage. It is in a sense a game of chess. If you and your opponent have not discussed such it is the norm that there’s nothing around. YET! If this sort of combat is used ON the server. Which this is mostly directed towards. Then keep a good eye on your surroundings. There’s even more things to take into account when on the server. Where you move and stand still once your “turn” is over. This is important because it will be a factor in judging if you’ll hit an attack or what not. As it doesn’t make sense to hit with a dagger if you’re three blocks away. So with all this in place. Let’s start.(For this I’ll just use an old character of mine and a fictive one, the old one because I’ve a character sheet for her) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Intro Maya:((Hey, Bob! Maya here! Ready to fight? Here’s a link to my character card so you know what you’re up against! ;)http://www.lordofthecraft.net/topic/61190-maya-jing-character/Lets get started. I’ll go first. :P)) The sun is high in the sky, midday to be exact if one was to read time depending on the sun, but it was shining. Maya, which had been challenged to the duel against Bob The Guardian was eager to fight. As she stepped out of the tree line and onto the completely flat grass field she swung both of her tiny warhammers around, holding one in each hand, both would be around 40 centimeters long with the hammer head, having a weight of approximately 8 kilo. Her hands were covered in thick brown leather gloves, giving her less finesse, but certainly a better grip. Over her chest a frail, but light metal armor would be sitting, having shoulder pads and a sort of skirt made out of a likewise frail metal. Shaped into a chain armor, going to her knees. Big leather boots would be the only other thing worth noty. Her hair would be set up, making it harder to grab. As Maya stood there she started to ponder, letting out a sigh of excitement as she saw movement in the furthest off tree line. Bob:-Insert Bob The Guardians answer here, it describes him and his weapons. He uses a longsword and buckler. And for some reason carries a tiny bag of sand.(This could for instance be used for distraction) 2. Preparation Maya:“Ye first, Mr. Bob!” Maya said with a grin, nearly yelling it across the empty and dew wet field. Smirking at herself as she started to trudge forward, one step at a time. She would use time to her advantage. She could be patient indeed.Approaching Bob in a steady and careful manner, she would tighten her grip around her hammers, both extended out to either side of her so she could get a full swing force if Bob charged. Bob:Bob smirked broadly, being male and seemingly taller AND bigger than Maya, he sure was stronger than her, it didn’t surprise him though. Such commoners as Maya were always tiny and pathetic.. This he mumbled under his breath as he saw Maya approach him with both of her arms extended to either side of her, carrying her well-known Warhammers. Bob knew it was time. She had done a lot of dishonorable things. And she needed to pay for it. Whatever the cost from his side. Justice was to be made. So as he wandered forward in haste, his knee slightly bent in order to face Maya better and legs widely spread, he would lift his tiny buckler that was strapped to his left hand and sword in the right pointing directly towards Maya, he was close now. He would keep her eyes on her, but not focused, he needed to be able to see both of the hammers at once. 3. Attacking Maya:Maya started to walk faster and faster as Bob neared her, the grin faltering from her face as business and “negotiations” were about to start. Upon finally being in reach Maya let out a growl, jumping instinctively towards Bob, a motion seen made with her left hand as she swung her before outstretched left arm in an underhand curv, she knew she was far away and it would be easy to evade such an attack, however that was not the intention of the swing, simply to scare him. However, if Bob was stupid enough to wander into the obvious swing, then he would deal with it harshly, she was aiming for his ribs. Note: It is important to tell your opponent how you swing and what you aim for. Position is key. Also. While we’re having a note I can also quickly point out that these “emotes” are long. Of course they would be shortened in-game and not as deeply thought through. Yet concept still applies. 4. Defense Bob:Having kept his eyes on the hammers, Bob The Guardian was able to escape the infact unexpected swing. By tilting himself a bit to his right, evading her left hammer, he would continue to keep his balance due to his stance. And with his sword already lifted he would thrust out his sword arm, aiming to poke a hole in poor Maya.Sliding a foot forward as he thrusted would make him able to gain more reach, making Maya almost certainly unable to step backwards due to the length of his sword compared to her hammers. Yet. His stance would now be compromised and not as steady as before. 5. Making Connection Maya:Maya groaned as she landed on the ground after the swing, having missed by meters. Changing her gaze to get a better look of Bob she barely had the time to see the sword coming. With this she tried to tilt and turn, yet being unable to due to her poor foot placement. A scream would travel over her lips and into the warm midday air as her stomach would get poked by the longsword, making a gory hole in her side of which a cracked rib and several other human organs would be seen through. As the blood started to pour, almost spit out of the hole in her left side, she screamed. Blinking rapidly in disbelief as she attempted to take a step backwards, her death near. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So this is an example of a fight. After the last, making connection the cycle would repeat. In this case poor Maya had placed herself very stupidly. Not taken the reach of her own weapon and Bobs into account. Also the fact that he had lifted the sword already made her death nearly certain. I hope this have been helpful in SOME way or another. If not. And you still wonder what T1 is or if you’re just really interested in proper rp fights. Then go check out the following links: Oh. Before I post any links. Thanks for reading all the way through! I hope this have inspired some of you! http://www.scribd.com/doc/11548456/T1-Rules-and-Guidelines-for-the-Modern-Day-Role-Player http://da.imvu.com/catalog/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpbb2&file=viewtopic.php&t=334201 http://lusiopartis.userboard.net/t112-rp-tier-1-paragraph-role-play After notes: Some uses things such as grammar mistakes and what not to get in free hits. I propose that we as the norm do not roll with such here on lotc, unless planned out between the "fighters."

Zeedus 102 Share Posted January 18, 2014 I wrote something like this- Taking it from a community of T1 Rp'ers from awhile ago, and I must say. I'm glad someone else posted it up in a format that wasn't more like an article (as I did.) Hopefully we get some people reading this! (Mine seems to have been Deleted and/or lost.) gam 386 Share Posted January 18, 2014 Wonderful guide, but I have a question: What exactly is the difference between normal RP combat and T1? Most people that I know, including myself, do this already, and we've never heard of T1.
Samson Option 9652 Share Posted January 18, 2014 T1 must be a formal, intellectual acronym.
monkeypoacher 8055 Share Posted January 18, 2014 +1. Very good, solid ruleset may fix RP default enough to make some people consider it.

MetaSolaray 242 Share Posted January 18, 2014 It's the kind of system I use, similar anyways; I rarely feel it's right to be hit by a "BOb stabs at Meta" however if you are willing to put in detail I'm going to more often take a fun fight :P
craotor 617 Share Posted January 18, 2014 Most people I talk to who love pvp default isnt because rp fighting is boring its because none of the involved parties want to lose, wich leads to metagaming and powergaming wich leads to drama and a 20 min conflict becomes a 3 hour ***** fest
Anderssn 1115 Share Posted January 19, 2014 This is great Jens! I prefer rp combat more than pvp, and this will make it easier for people to learn how to actually do rp combat so they don't always have to stick to pvp. It's a server for roleplay after all. Fredfort (jens6851) 283 Author Share Posted January 21, 2014 Three random t1 links added. All of these are for the forum roleplay part and are not ideally used on the server. Just for those interested in "forum T1".
