(Thanks to Freya for helping me reorganize and update everything, though it would probably be more accurate to say that I helped her, as she by far did most of the work. I'd also like to thank my mommy and daddy for being there for me every step of the way, and of course batman for---- oh wait, this isn't an acceptance speech... don't mind me!

Anyways, everything below the upcoming line is what is now posted on the rules page. We are experiencing technical difficulties at this time, so the page is currently very oddly formatted and quite an eye sore to read, but the content is there nonetheless and will be given a proper make over as soon as possible.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rules of the server are something we all find boring and you may think "Hey, what's the point", however it's best for all of us if you take five minutes of your time and read them. It'll save you questioning things later, and it will also save you from making any mistakes that break the rules - we don't take "I didn't know that rule" as an excuse!  When it comes to the forums, there are a set of different rules, which you can find here. Make sure you follow them when you're using the website!

The Lord of the Craft Server Rules and Guidelines

A small list of terms and acronyms used in the rules:

Character - a roleplay character, controlled by a player.

Player - a real-life member of LOTC.

RP - Roleplay

IC - In-character

OOC - Out-Of-Character

IG - In-Game

FTB - Fade-to-Black

PvP - Player versus player, specifically meaning minecraft combat.

LOTC - Lord of the Craft, our server.

RP’ly - In roleplay

Global Rules (In-Game, Teamspeak, Forums):

  • Please don’t spam any of our services, whether In-Game, on Teamspeak or the Forums.

  • You may not share any LOTC accounts with other players. Actions committed by others on your account (including people living with you at home) are your responsibility. If your account is hacked, however, you may appeal to a Moderator or Administrator with proof of said hacking.

  • Player harassment, blackmailing or discrimination of any kind is forbidden.

  • You must not impersonate another player or backseat moderate.

  • Please don’t “Moderator Shop”, meaning asking different members of staff a question until you get an answer to a question you want. Thus if one moderator answers you but you aren’t fond of the answer, you may not ask another for a different response.

  • Even if you don’t technically break any listed rules, either from walking the fine line between breaking the rules and not or from consistently jumping through loopholes, it is a moderator’s right to warn or ban you if they deem it necessary. This will only occur in extreme scenarios, and moderator’s abusing this right will be dealt with accordingly.

In-Game Roleplay Rules:

  • You need to keep IC at all times. If you need to use OOC, you can either privately message the player using /tell <minecraft name>, or by using Local OOC. This channel can be accessed by putting double brackets before your speech, like this “((Hi guys”. Please use Local-OOC sparingly around other players!

  • Metagaming and powergaming of any kind are not allowed.

  • You need to use a roleplay-friendly skin! This means a skin that illustrates your character’s appearance. Also, you must not use a skin that is obscene, offensive or not related to RP, such as a Batman skin.

  • Make sure you don't break any of the server's lore - it's there for a reason! Refer to the lore rules here for more information.

  • You're only allowed to play as one of the approved races - they're listed on the wiki. If you want to play one of the more exotic races or creatures, such as Golems, then you must follow the lore for them and contact the person in charge of the race/creature.

  • We don’t allow descriptive sexual roleplay of any kind. This includes explicit nudity and actions involving a character’s sexual organs. You may however ‘fade to black’ for the purpose of, say, conceiving a child for your character. Fade to black means you skip the roleplay of the action, but you may roleplay out the consequences, for example having the child. Both players must consent to a Fade to Black.

  • You don't need to permanently kill your character when you die. You may however permanently kill your character if you so wish. If you perma-kill your character, you have a one week grace period in which you can return your character from the dead. After the one week is over, your character can no longer be brought back from the grave. Another person may never permanently kill your character, although an Administrator has the right to enforce one in extreme circumstances.

  • When you die, either in roleplay or minecraft, you simply go back to the Cloud Temple and forget all memory of your death and the roleplay leading up to it.

  • You can't go back to where you died until 30 minutes after the event of your death has passed (If you die in battle, you must wait 30 minutes after the battle ends until you may return), unless it is where your character would logically go. If your character was murdered near their home, you may return to their home as it is where your character would likely go.

  • Racism is allowed IC, but make sure you don't do it OOC - it can only be towards other in-game races.

  • If you feel the need to curse (swear) IC, keep it tasteful and don't overdo it. Insults that fit your character are encouraged, rather than real-world curses, such as an Orc using “Skah” or a Human telling someone to “go plough yourself!”.

  • Try to not overuse a resource if it is not in your character’s nature, whether this is harvesting an entire field of wheat and leaving it barren, or slaughtering all of a player’s animals.

  • Consistently depriving another player (or players) of their fun for your own personal gain or amusement, even after receiving appropriate warnings, is punishable if deemed necessary by the moderation teams. This may also be considered harassment. Essentially, don't be a troublesome player that only plays to annoy others or be a nuisance.

  • You can't use any client-side modifications that give you an advantage over other players, like; speed-hacking, x-ray vision, fly-hacking. You can however, use cosmetic and aesthetic modifications such as shader mods, Optifine and minimaps.

The Mechanical Standard:

Our in-game server runs according to the 'Mechanical Standard' rule. This means that we base our roleplay off of the possibilities available to us mechanically (whether or not they can be done in vanilla minecraft). This means that, if you can't do something mechanically, you can't do it in roleplay, while if you can do something mechanically, it can be done in RP. Climbing up waterfalls is thus perfectly alright, while RPing ropes to get over a mechanically impassable wall is not. The following rules outline the exceptions to this standard, collectively creating a rule known as “abuse of mechanics”.

  • You must not use your soulstone to avoid/escape combat, arrest, imprisonment or roleplay! If you are imprisoned, you can only soulstone away if left for over 30 minutes without roleplay.

  • Abusing glitches in server plugins or minecraft mechanics is not allowed. This includes glitches such as block-jumping (placing a block or several in a region preventing block placement and jumping off of it/them before they disappear to reach a place you couldn’t have reached before), or duping items using a faulty plugin. We endeavour to make sure all of our plugins are glitch-free, but if you discover one, please report it instead of abusing it.

  • Escaping PvP combat by running into a region that restricts PvP is against the rules, such as the region surrounding the Cloud Temple.

  • Underground farms are not allowed! It doesn't make any sense for farms to be underground, so make sure you don't make them - even if you do include glowstone or torches. The same goes for automated farms, as they don’t make roleplay sense and the technology doesn’t exist for them.

Building/Destruction Rules:

  • Damaging other player’s buildings is allowed only with RP reasoning, and is encouraged to only be done when the owner of the building is online. RP reasoning can include vendettas or sieges, as an example.

  • If you're building something yourself, please make sure it actually suits the area it's in - and that it makes roleplay sense! That means, you can't build a giant floating castle, or a physics-defying tower! Be sensible when you build. Also, if you're underground, make sure you add supports to the area, else it would logically collapse.

  • Digging visually unappealing or physics-defying tunnels is not allowed, such as ‘strip-mining’, where you dig straight 2x1 tunnels.

  • Don’t leave floating leaves when cutting down trees! If you decide to cut down a tree, ensure that you do so fully, rather than leaving unappealing and unRP floating blocks behind.

Combat Rules:

Sometimes, you'll encounter hostile situations on the server, that need to be dealt with via combat.  When you face these situations, please heed the following rules:

  • Both of you must agree to the type of fighting you're using - PvP or RP fighting. If you can't agree, PvP is default. Before commencing a PvP fight, you must roleplay leading up to it, and you must also make the other player aware before you attack - e.g. an emote.

  • Once a fight begins, the type of combat (RP or PvP) agreed upon may not change unless everyone agrees to the change, regardless of the standing default. For instance, if an RP fight has begun and someone wants to change to PvP fighting, every participant has to agree to that change, otherwise it will remain an RP fight.

  • You must give a five second countdown to PvP after both parties have made clear they are ready.

  • If you RP’ly die in a roleplay fight, the victor may choose whether you can soulstone or if you must die in minecraft combat as well. If someone else comes along and gets involved in your fight, they need to follow with the mechanic that was initially decided on.

  • If you run away from a fight with little or no roleplay, then the other player can attack you via PvP! Make sure that you emote it, roleplay it fully and give them time to react in roleplay. However, yelling at a running player that is not involved in your roleplay to stop or fight is not grounds to PvP them if they do not stop.

  • You aren’t allowed to simply log out to avoid combat. Speak to the other person, and explain you need to go.

  • During war and battles, the rules regarding combat change. These changes can be found in the War Rules here.

Huzzah! I'm glad the Cloud Temple rule was re-clarified. Avoids a lot of confusion that way.

One thing to add though. "If you start an RP fight, it should stay RP" or something like that... *pouts*

Hooray. Number four.

Not that it matters. Fine to see. Do not read the rules anyway.

Consider me pestered. Added it.

You forgot to stipulate that underground farms are not allowed.

It's there!

  • Underground farms are not allowed! It doesn't make any sense for farms to be underground, so make sure you don't make them - even if you do include glowstone or torches. The same goes for automated farms, as they don’t make roleplay sense and the technology doesn’t exist for them.

Can you please make consent of the owner mandatory for destruction of property?

As far as I am aware owner consent isn't needed.

I was looking in the building/destruction rules, where it was actually elsewhere. Underground farms make me very angry.

Underground farms seemed more like an exception to the mechstandard rule so I put them there instead.

You must give a five second countdown to PvP after both parties have made clear they are ready.

I would suggest putting in an OOC declaration of being a combatant, in PvP circumstances. It is a tad frustrating whenever other players decide to jump in, without your apparent knowledge.

Glad this finally happened, sent a long message to Shiftnative a month ago about a lot of these things and nothing has been done since now so I guess..... woot, woot.
