The Death Of A Lord

The Battle

The 8 men marched far and away to the Elven town. They had been given orders to slaughter and destroy the populace and followed such orders correctly. A father and daughter sat by the lake fishing while most of the townspeople were inside the inn when the Orenians charged. The inns-people locked themselves inside leaving the father and daughter to the mercy of the charge. As Hadrian and Merek fought the father, Jon put a sword to the girl's neck and brought her in front of the tavern where a man came out.

Demanding the man opened the doors or the girl would die, Jon watched with satisfaction as the man turned to do so. However, Hadrian was not finished with his blood thirst and cut the man clean in two from behind, leaving Jon to slit the girl's throat. One down. 3 men went up to the roof to swing onto the balcony while the other five hammered the door with blows to break in. Finally, Jon kicked open the doors with a war cry and charged upstairs, flanked by his best warriors. He ran forward and hacked an elf's head in two spraying gore everywhere. Two down. The last elf was easily killed by Merek as the men grinned at each other in victory.

But the battle was not over yet as the ground began to rumble with the approach of the 25 man Tueton army. Taking cover inside, the Orenians were bombarded with arrows as they were outnumbered 3 to 1. Hacking down the thin wall, Chet made an escape route to the ground which the few survivors ran out of. They quickly scattered among the country side leaving Chet and Jon together to cross the river. Wading through it, they turned to see a Tueton leading a pack of dogs in pursuit. Turning while unslinging his bow, Jon rapid fired 5 shots across the river, all of which made contact with the man as did a few of Chet's arrows. Three down.

After a while of walking, they made their way to the road which was their fatal mistake. Two men burst cover followed by a horseman at the two soldiers. Charging forward, Chet and Jon hacked their way at the men. However, Chet was impaled by the horseman leaving Jon alone against the three. Being pushed into the shallows of the river, Jon severely wounded the orc, Erik, and grinned as he had a chance. Turning towards another Sariant, he staggered back from an unseen enemy. Looking down, an arrow protruded from his chest clean through his armor. With a grunt, he moved towards the archer only to be shot again, forcing him to his knees. A drawn out breath escaped his lips before he fell onto his back, left for dead by the Sariants.

After a few minutes, a blurry form stood over him. Thinking it was the enemy, Jon grasped the hilt of his blade weakly only to stop to see the symbol of the White Rose. Hadrian crouched down next to him and grasped his hand as the life slowly drained from the lord. He had come into this world just a peasant boy and had worked his way to become a Duke of Oren. He was happy. Shaking slightly as the end neared, Jon whispered his final words "Avenge me" and breathed his last. The tale of Jonathan Othaman came to an end as his soul ascended to the Seven Skies.

Upon looking through Jonathan's things, a will is found from him.

Duke Jonathan Othaman's Will

To my firstborn son, Tarcell Othaman

I sent you when you were just as a boy to a master whom I trusted and will not be named in this letter. Unfortunately, you had just returned to serve the Empire when I wrote this letter meaning I have passed on. You have something no Othaman has ever had before, an education. Use it wisely my son, bring glory to our house. I give you the title of heir to House Othaman and Valles.

To my dearest friend, Corbett VanCleef

I can only start off by being simple and by saying I love you as a brother. We suffered, rose, and fought together, and I will wait for you to join me in the afterlife. We've had our good times and our bad times but by the Creator we had our fun. You were a man I could always trust and knew would have my back no matter what. My the Creator guide you and grant you wisdom my friend until we meet again. You are released from my service and have fulfilled your oath. I leave to you the Lich's Bane as a reminder of the evil we slayed, the giant Boar's Skin we slayed at the Di Silvarois's manor, and a crate of iron blocks and emeralds to supply your men. You were my best friend, and I trust in you that my memory will not fade.

To my life long friend, Branaford Fairheart

I remember to this day when we met at the Winterguard fortress when you were but a Wolvenguard Scout. My friend, we accomplished much. Even though near the end of my life we went through bumps in our friendship, you never ceased to give me wisdom and strength. Thank you my friend, I know you will do well with the Decterum and help guide them to greatness. I leave to you the Crown of Telemar in which you helped defeat.

To my loyal companion, Oliver Culten

We met long ago, and you have served me with faithful loyalty since then. The gratitude I hold for your hard work is tremendous for you were a key factor in keeping Valles running. You did a great job with Redpoint, and I know will continue to do so well after my death. Guard your tongue for people will look to punish you for it. You will have enemies so deal with them wisely. I leave to you the war camp, 3,000 minas, and my blessing. You are free from my service

To Harrison Briarwood and Company

Hardworking men, that is what you are. We had a dream to grow together, and though it was not successful, a few bonds were made. Move forward with a clear mind for not just the benefits of yourselves, but for the benefits of all men and women of Oren. You have potential, use it. To you I leave all lands around Vekaro for your needs. I also release you of your oaths, use your freedom wisely.

To Leonidas Bedevere

A wise man, a hardworker and known for his kindness to others. Though you have retired, you did good things in your life to be proud of. Live long and happy my friend, you have deserved the rest. To you I leave but my good wishes, for all I have you posses in your heart. May you ever be strong.

To the soldiers of Valles

Valiants, Salvians, Briarwoods, and Foxhearth men, a man cannot ask for more loyal and strong soldiers. Never did you fear battle, never did you fear to stand up and fight, and never did you accept defeat. I have given you what I could in my life, and it is up to your officers where to go next. Any of you who wish to stay with Tarcell may do so and continue service to the Othamans. Remember your training my brothers and sisters. Respect your superiors, give men your ear but only good ones your heart, and fight until your dying breath. I will leave it to the officers to decide what is to be done. History will never forget the good things accomplished through ours works. Lives have been saved and enemies defeated, you did good Valles heroes.

To the Emperor and the Imperial Marshal

Instead of a giving, I have one final request to you both. My son, Tarcell ((Who is played by me)), is in need of a job and housing. He is a fine soldier as I've seen and tutored in the ways of magic which could be of use. I ask you give him a position in the Caerngard as well as an officer ranking in the Imperial Army. He will not disappoint you and will dedicate his life to hard work and the protection of Oren. I leave a crate of iron blocks and emeralds for the Imperial Army's use in battle. Avenge me.

Final Address

To the people of Oren, we will rise again. Oren will be the greatest nation once more, and the Empire of Oren will be feared across the land. I leave it to you to complete my dream. Work, care, and fight alongside one another. You are all under one empire, strive to make it grow. May the Creator Bless you all, and may you find eternal peace.

-Jonathan Othaman

Merek sits in the Valles camp, rain falling down outside his tent. He looks up towards the entrance as he relaxes more onto his bed. He has recently heard word of Jon's death.

"This always happens. Lords die in my service and I fail to protect them. Loyalty is a treacherous thing. . ."

Merek sighs as he gets up from his bed, heading towards the exit of his tent. "What shall I do with these?"

Merit hears the news of Jon's death from his assistant, slamming his hand on the table as several glasses and plates clatter onto the ground breaking. He shakes his head before sighing, sad for the loss of a friend.

"In a world of great leaders, it is truly rare to find a leader who inspires us to be greater...."

Jayko has only recently heard of the death of Jon. His pain was greater than some. After all, he served under him since the beginning days of Valles. To add to that, he had heard of 5 deaths now of people he knew, 3 of which he witnessed first-hand. But despite all the pain he felt, he found a sense of peace. Jon was a rare leader, after all. Standing up and exiting his tent, there was only one thought in Jayko's head: "The greatest gift a great leader can ask for is for his followers to become greater."
