_pok_ 1768 Share Posted June 7, 2014 Deep from the depths of the banlands... Anyway while serving my time for being a filthy hacking dirty son of a ***** I have had time to reflect on some **** while also generally being away from the computer screen. I've also been drawing some comics which has been fun but I guess that's not really important. What I wanted to discuss today was the future of LoTC. I've been on this server for... 3 years now [jesus christ] and really I've only seen two distinct points in time where we've fundamentally changed as a server [maybe 3, if you count the second one as three]. 1.) The transition from Aegis to Asulon somehow changed everything about how we as a server went about doing things. The mentality went from light hearted, fun yet competitive RP to an all out battle for superiority over other nations. Maybe this had to do with the rise in OOC freedom for Nation Leaders and our new understanding of just how important we were. This lead to a lot of changes in how people RPed and really has lead up to how we are as a server today. 2.) The transition from PvP Default to RP Default and then back again was the other big change. When RP default came along it changed how the server worked at its very core. We turned even further away from lighthearted RP and became more hardcore in regards to how we RPed. People became more defensive about their RP and generally more aggressive OOCly toward each other. The transition back to PvP default was not really a fix for this either. We still had [have] this hardcore mode to our server that only turned into a need to be superior in PvP instead of RP. That needs to change. [To be clear I'm not advocating for one side or the other, but if you must know I'm personally for PvP] ------------------------------- Anyway, LoTC as a whole has changed a lot since we began in May of 2011 and I think in many ways it has been for the better and also for the worse. We are about to enter our fourth map [official map] and already we're seeing conflict start to arise over how it should work and what not to do and what to do and all this other crap. But I'm not here to talk about 4.0. I'm talking about what happens after we eventually grow tired of 4.0 like we always grow tired of maps and all that stuff and want something new. I'm proposing a fresh start. ------------------------------- 4.0 needs to be it for this little "era" if you want to call it that for LoTC. The antagonist needs to be more powerful than its ever been, needs to push us to the brink and this time we shouldn't win. This should be the end for everybodies chapter in the 1300-1500s in LoTC's history. The races should finally grow weary and fail, but this should be a slow and very delicate process with plenty of events and whatnot to make this last chapter of this "Present Era" [that's what I'm going to refer to Aegis-4.0 as from now on] incredibly memorable and fun for the playerbase. Once we're about halfway through 4.0, or even when the antagonist begins to rear its head, the Lore team needs to get working. A total rewrite essentially. Perhaps we stay in the same "Present Era" with the same races and whatnot just with a total wipe of nations, history, and memory. Or maybe we advance or go back in time to a different era with a new lore and setting. Post-4.0 LoTC should be something entirely new. A whole new era for the players to roleplay in. I've talked with a bunch of people and a lot of us wanted 3.0 to be it but I do not think the playerbase is ready for this change. I think if the playerbase goes into 4.0 knowing that this is it for their character they will make it much more memorable and have more fun in their last chapter. The biggest problem I see coming from this is the "MUH RP" argument. I know for a fact that there will be people who refuse to let go of characters in the "Present Era" and will argue "I've had my tier 1000 water-electric-god warrior for 3 years and now this hacking scum is telling me I can't have him after another whole year! MUH RP!" Sadly, this will have to happen eventually. Nothing lasts forever and change is always good. A fresh start will help create a whole new environment on LoTC. People would be interested in returning to LoTC and it would be less intimidating for new players to join [not saying it is]. We could rework our creation lore as well as use this fresh start to add cool new plugins and features into this new world that may not work in our "Present Era." This is just a little idea I had and I know it is a very long way off [hopefully very long anyway]. For some reason I feel like this is in the wrong section of the forums so if it is just move it. It'd be cool to see some feedback or maybe some other ideas for this next generation or era or whatever. I think it'd be nice to step away from this old era of recycled and reused lore and start with some refreshing new stuff again but maybe I'm wrong and somebody has a better idea. TL;DR ur a lazy piece of **** read it *******

Aelu / Rel (Combustionary) 1540 Share Posted June 7, 2014 It won't fix the community - And the community is the cause of all our issues. The same cliques will still be here. It'll be the same thing, at the end of the day, with nothing more than a fresh coat of paint.
Mingpow321 285 Share Posted June 7, 2014 Talks of a complete lore reboot have been going around since about halfway through 3.0, at least ones that I was privy to. I personally agree that a change of pace, a new setting would be very interesting. The thing is, the same old groups are going to reform just as something new to fit the setting. Therefore, the same people are going to rise to power, the same folks are going to be at the top of the money list, and Minecraft will still be Minecraft. To be honest, OOC skills and traits run the server. If somebody is good at leadership, they'll easily amass a following and lead them into good RP and prosperity. If a person is good at collecting wealth OOCly, they'll be the rich ones again (Syrio, Chumpchump, etc.). While I don't see this as a problem, it essentially defeats the purpose of a complete lore reset.
Hiebe 2493 Share Posted June 7, 2014 People liked aegis and asulon cause of lore freedom. Idk if this would work.

Telanir 6975 Share Posted June 7, 2014 Gooms will never die. I think this might be the problem. Some people will simply change their name and play the same character. Catch my drift? :o
Crayfishchris 751 Share Posted June 7, 2014 In response to your 'Present Era' idea (which I rather like). How far ahead are you thinking? 100 years? 1000? Will folks like the Ascended, or young elves stay around? We all gonna die? :3 And in response to you people saying the same communities will form: Yes, but there will be people who change around, and take the chance to switch up characters. You can't contain everyone in that.
TeaLulu 1783 Share Posted June 7, 2014 67% of the server lacks the creativity to come up with a new, permanent, non-trolly character that isn't ripped from a fantasy genre.
The Lion 736 Share Posted June 7, 2014 People seem to overlook why Aegis was really awesome. It wasn't the setting, lore-freedom, or default fighting mech, it was the mofuckin' Wanderin' Wizard. It was so cool as a player to see one of the server leads actually running around RPing and relating his "modreq" game commands into RP. LotC today is manufactured fun, it's monotonous and predictable. Our GM's and Admins treat this game like they're burnt out customer service reps. The piggy bank shattered when Availer stopped coming around. Ever since then it's been a frantic, yet oddly lackadaisical, piece the bank back together with some duct tape and call it fixed by the staff, like there's one problem and one solution. Once Shift came by and RP'd popping some locks for me after I put out a modreq and it was thug. I bet he's done that for a few of you too. Mog's empire was so popular not only because he hit a homer with media trends, but because he was a tangible staff member and leader whom you could talk to. I tried this back when I was ET and players whether they realized I was just playing an ET char (That's you Malinor/Conclavia) or not had some entertainment. Bring back the age of staff creativity and RP interrelation with their "job".
Destroyer_Bravo 1054 Share Posted June 7, 2014 The only way cliques will die is if the leader quits and gets bored/burnt out/goes to do something else Look at eve, and observe how BoB died (minus the whole mess with the disbandment). The leader quit, and so did everyone else.

As a recently demoted GM, it's hella difficult to RP out every single modreq you do when there are another 10 people waiting for you to finish the one you're on. There are a lot more people on our server than there used to be.

big narstie 1701 Share Posted June 7, 2014 The reason that the server is **** is because of OOC reasons nothing to do with characters, the maps or anything like that.
Cyndikate 2303 Share Posted June 7, 2014 A reset isn't going to solve anything, but just make players leave. If you wanna fix the clique problem, make cliques rely on outsiders. Create content that caters to the entire server and not just them. Make cliques not have as much fun as the rest.
