I've been told by someone that if a character below the age of either 17 or eighteen were to begin learning a void magic, the results would be very.. Not-good. The person whom told me has quite a bit of experience under his belt when it comes to roleplaying magic, and has a remarkable understanding of the lore provided for it. However, I've found no lore regarding this statement, and have looked over multiple guides for void magic. If there is an age limitation, please do link to something proving it, because I'd like to know.

You have to be at least 16. That is the limitation the MAT had and it still sticks. It is not written down anywhere.

Children cannot learn magic. That's what it has been. I do not recall an exact age, because it ought not to be necessary. Wait until your character is not a child, and then feel free to learn magic.

Treat magic like low level calculus. If you think it's reasonable for your character to learn under practice low level calculus with serious chances of success, then they can learn magic. We had a guideline of 14 or 15 in place back when the MAT was a thing.

"Learning magic" at 15 doesn't mean casting spells. It could mean. "Now you will read about the fundamentals of fire and why it is hot."

It was something that MAT had in place to stop child mages. It's not officially written down anywhere so if you want a child to practice a few inept noncombat spells go ahead, but you can't have a juvenile pyromancer or the like.

The age guide actually varies by race. I remember a discussion within the MAT about this and we never really came to an exact conclusion. However it operates like this, for Void especially:

The first step to accessing the Void is to lapse all concentration on any thought and then to reach out to nothing and grasp it. A child or teenager doesn't have the ability to blank their mind. There is a certain requirement of understanding one's self required to escape the entrapment /of/ one's self. Self actuality doesn't typically happen until late teen-hood.

Other magics have different limitations, typically deities wouldn't believe that a child has had the opportunity to prove itself.

It has never been impossible. But the vast majority of children and teenagers aren't capable of making that first step of making contact with the source of that types' power, and thus cannot begin learning beyond the theories.

Also teachers tend not to want to take on children.
