*****, I’m Fabulous

Voidlings. Practically unknown, not documented, and largely unnoticed. Creatures formed the moment the void came into existence, with no concept of time or space; they live nearly all of their lives within its womb, doing as they please. After all, in a place full of both everything and nothing, Voidlings have nothing to lose, and thus do anything. This, however, is of no concern to those wishing to study these….creatures.

If one were to seek a collection of words that describes Voidlings entirely, it would be “Servants of Chaos”. Following the volatile and dangerous nature of the void, Voidlings strive to break Order to create disorder. Actually, it is in this very manner of ‘breaking order’ that Voidlings arrive upon the mortal realms. More on that later, however. Now, we move on to the nature of these peculiar creatures.

Nature of Voidlings

‘Infinitely curious’ would be another short and sweet collection of words that best describe a Voidling. Nothing knows how boundless the curiosity one of these creatures holds, and it will stop at nothing to learn anything new. To put it simply; curiosity didn’t kill the (metaphorical) ‘cat’ of the Voidlings….it conceived it. It is because of this that Voidlings observe the mortal realms so closely, peaking over the edge of the void to spy on petty mortals on their everyday routines. For a while, and a very brief ‘while’, at that, the Voidlings were content with this spying. It catered to their unquenchable curiosity, but provided them very little to digest. After all, there is only so much you can learn from observation alone.

Apart from curiosity, there is also an affinity for causing chaos, but you already know that. No doubt, a creature made from the very essence of the void is going to want to make its immediate environment as home-feeling as possible. Usually, that means causing complete chaos. Voidlings, in fact, are specialists in the art of causing chaos. In a world where nothing moves, and time is at a standstill (perfect order), you could turn to a Voidling and hope...no….KNOW that it will be able to bring some chaos into the mix.

These are the two fundamentals on the nature of Voidlings; infinitely curious, with an affinity to break order. Everything else is a personal trait of the individual Voidling.

Birth of a Voidling unto the mortal plane

The ‘second birth’ of a Voidling is usually a pivotal moment in it’s life (not that any Voidlings have a life, as they are simply sentient manifestations of the void). It’s called a second birth because it is not the first birth (which is when they came into existence) and definitely not the last birth (more on that later on). It is an impossible thing to see a Voidling come into the world of the living without wanting to do so. In fact, the process required to bring these creatures from the Void and into the mortal realm is very much deliberate. The Voidling requires enough will to cross into whatever realm they might wish to enter, but that is only half of the process. The other half is a sufficiently chaotic event in the realm that the Voidling is entering, be it a bolt of lightning hitting a pile of twigs, or a mage causing a tower to explode. Of course, the chaos doesn’t have to be explosive or burning, but where is the fun in that?

Now, the reason why a Voidling requires a chaotic event is not because they /can’t/ cross over into the mortal realm without it, but that their ‘base strength’ depends on how chaotic the event is. A Voidling born due to a smoking pipe being lit is going to be much less powerful than a Voidling born due to a trio of lightning bolts hitting a single tree and turning it into ashes. And so Voidlings seek out the most chaotic thing possible before coming (back) into the mortal realms. Occasionally, this can lead to Voidlings disputing over which one gets the birth-rights. More often than not, this is due to a very chaotic occurrence that seems to be on the verge of happening, and both of these creatures wish to harness this chaos for their own sake.

As a final note on the birthing of Voidlings; they are able to be ‘summoned’, to a lesser extent. Usually, several people (with or without the intent of calling a Voidling) create a chaotic enough event to draw the attention of said Voidling. This Voidling usually observes the event for a good amount of time before choosing to exert themselves and pass on into the mortal realm. This event seldomly turns out in the favour of those summoning the Voidling.

The level of chaos which spawns in a Voidling is called ‘chaos-spawn’, and it stays the same through the Voidling’s birth until it is brought back into the void, to be born once more.

The Abilities of a Voidling

Voidlings can do several things once they have had their ‘second birth’. All of these abilities depend entirely on what state of chaos the Voidling was spawned into. A Voidling spawned in by nothing but an ember will have very minimal capabilities. Keep that in mind. The primary and most noticeable thing is being able to use any void-based magic (Nothing else) at their whim, drawing directly from themselves instead of from the void. This power is affected by the chaos-spawn. A Voidling with very high chaos-spawn would be able to summon an avalanche without dissipating, whilst a Voidling of very low chaos-spawn would probably be able to make a few snowflakes, or a pointy needle of ice. The second most notable characteristic is being able to shift form rapidly and often. Being void creatures, Voidlings have no initial form, although they often prefer using the form of whatever chaos they were ‘second born’ into. From a fire-clad elemental to a blue-haired human, Voidlings can pick and chose from a large variety of things to transform into, as long as it abides to the limits of the chaos they were spawned in. A Voidling of very low chaos-spawn will probably only have the ability to turn into a small beetle (not even a human) whilst a high chaos-spawn Voidling would be able to become an Olog or a tough bear.

The third and fourth characteristics are subtle at first, but can prove to be game-changers in the long run. When void magic is used near Voidlings, the mage saps mana directly from the Voidling, instead of from the void. Additionally, when any void magic is performed on the Voidling, it absorbs this energy and replenishes its own. This means that Mages might find it very difficult to combat a Voidling, at first. With the right know-how, however, a Mage would be able to defeat a Voidling by using a large amount of mana and making sure the Voidling does not re-absorb it, thus making it lose strength and dissipate. Quite counter-intuitive.

Voidling Progression

A Voidling always starts out from its second birth as a mostly clueless creature. With very little knowledge on anything, they seek out information as quickly as possible. At this stage, they are relatively harmless, but learn very quickly. Often-times, it is more beneficial for a Voidling to originate from a low chaos-spawn and take the form of an insect, exploring the mortal realm without raising suspicion. More likely than anything, the Voidling will die many times before it knows enough to cause any harm or damage. Voidlings carry their gained memory through their in between time in the void, where they regain energy to reform in the physical world. They do, however, lose 30 minutes of memory leading up to their ‘death’, due to that memory being dispersed as energy.

After a long while, a Voidling will function just like a normal person, and after even longer, it will function better than that. With a large amount of knowledge, these creatures are a force to reckon with. It is at this time, however, that their thirst for knowledge overrides their will for utter chaos, and they learn that keeping undetected is the best way to remain alive, and gain knowledge.

Voidling Physique

The appearance of a Voidling can be anything, as long as it has enough chaos-spawn to chose it’s form. There are, however, key traits that all Voidlings possess, no matter the form; an aura of no fixed colour that shifts rapidly and randomly and releases slightly visible trails at the points where the Voidling’s body is open to the air, such as the mouth, nose, eyes, and the rest. Additionally, Voidling blood changes colour with it’s aura, and they have no organs, as if the insides of their body is instead replaced by the energy keeping them running.

Voidlings are able to chose the form they can take from what they have learnt (via magic). If they have killed and examined a bear, they can become a bear via conjuration. If they have killed and examined a human, they can become the human. So on and so forth. The same applies to evocations. Voidlings have full control of their forms, and require mana to switch between them (but not to hold the forms, so it requires no mana to keep the form).

In elemental form, Voidlings can take many shapes. The elemental form chosen is nearly always that of the chaos they were born in, and is the most powerful form that the Voidling can take. There is, however, a form less suited for combat, and more for utility and recuperation. Becoming pitch black, the Voidling  partially severes its connection to the physical realm. To put it as an example, it has one foot in the void and one foot in the mortal plane. Here it can recover its magic and heal wounds, but it is extremely easy to kill. It can, however, ‘kill’ itself fully and return to the void at will, in this form, but this completely removes whatever chaos-spawn the Voidling previously had.

Voidling Magic

A Voidling’s magical potential is dictated directly by three things. The first is what kind of chaotic event occured to spawn it in, and the second is how chaotic that event was. A fire-born Voidling is going to be able to evoke fire far more easily than ice (hot water, however, would be easier). The third variable is what form the Voidling is in. A bear-formed Voidling would have little to no magical capabilities, whilst a thin, frail elf Voidling might have large magical capabilities. This balance of ‘Brain and Brawn’ depends on the chaos-spawn, as a high chaos-spawn can chose more powerful versions of both extremes, whilst a low chaos-spawn cannot.

Voidling Personality

Rash, Curious, Mischievous...in fact, sinful is the best way to describe it. Anything, and I mean /anything/, that can cause trouble/chaos is what they love. Use your imagination with aid from this picture:

Ymxo49e.png

Me? Noooohhh I didn’t do anything!

Advantages:

-Can use any magic they want, as long as it adheres to their chaos-spawn (i.e. a Voidling spawned in water will not use fire evocation often/well at all)

-Can change their shape according to the magic they are using to form themselves.

-Have advanced magical capabilities, as they are not crippled by using magic from the void.

-Can re-absorb magic flung/used on/at them.

Disadvantages:

-Easily defeated by a mage who knows that using magic near them drains their energy.

-Vulnerable to the elements, depending on what they were spawned in (A Voidling spawned in lava will become rock and die if non-void water is thrown onto them, no matter what shape they have taken).

-Can be absorbed by items that absorb mana.

-(help me think of more if you believe there are too few disadvantages)

Red Lines:

-Voidlings are not any better than any other mage in magic.

-Voidlings cannot shift shape without being weakened afterwards; no shifting during a battle unless you emote and roleplay the high exhaustion is causes.

-No ‘speaking to animals’ if the Voidling is an animal. Speaking to animals is for druids, silly.

-A chaotic event must be found each time the Voidling re-enters the mortal realm.

((That's about it! Give me your thoughts, ideas and additions that you believe might make this proposal better, and remember to be constructive in your feedback! I do not intend to play this creature-group, so LMs can give it to who ever they feel fit, as long as I get to overview it and see if they RP it correctly. I hope to see a group of these creatures in the near future...but only time will tell!))

I do like this, but as Lago said, I was sure Voidal Horrors and other strange Void creatures are already present in the lore and implemented into the server.

So an unnecessary +1 I guess.

We already poot! up some Void-creatures, some based on your lore.

The Void Horrors that exist currently aren't exactly something you'd want to keep as a pet unless you enjoy becoming a mindless husk with all thoughts and memories consumed.

Void Horrors are different to the creatures described here: they're Lovecraftian nightmares rather than playable elementals and personally I think that similarity is a potential source of confusion. The shared part is the origin: they're things that inhabit the void that have leaked through.

Alright...well, since this already exists, we might as well cłose up this lore proposal, huh? Unless you guys wanna take inspiration or event-ideas from this creature?
