Hallowed Tidings

The brisk, midnight wind caressed the expansive reaches of the Holy Orenian Empire. A tenebrous veil enveloped the sky, giving way to not a single star, sharing with Vailor no light; bar that of the cold, unforgiving moon. Trees swayed weakly 'pon the wind, groaning eerily as their great lengths painted the roadside with shadow born of torchlight. No riders blessed the road between the ruins of Akovia and Felsen, no hermit made course for a hamlet, and no stray dog foraged for food. The countryside was utterly devoid of motion, spare the hapless, heaving trees. 

Nearing the hallowed grounds of the Orenian civil war, one may notice change. The forests that separated the blood-stained site have risen higher. Shadows stretch farther. The stench of mottled blood stinks anew. A monolith of shade and lumber stretches over the forsaken ground, playing host to the swaying damned, forever imprisoned 'pon their nooses. The grass is wet, and the air is frigid. Frost settles upon the ground, hoof prints marring its luminescent blanket.

A journal lays open, its contents damp.

But a page is legible.

"Surely damned, I must be. His mighty steed, from 'pon all he can see! Quickly now, I flee into the trees. DAMN YOU LEGS, whose limits ail me!

His horrific guffaw, mine mind does recall. Murderous crows, there, here, and whereall. Headless men, blood seeping then. All men of culture, decorate his den!"

"I trip now, panicked I fall. I beseech thee, spectre - spare we all!"
