The Good Old Days. Nothing's changed for me. Still trying to conquer the world and all that, just in a less twelve year old sort of fashion. This is probably the single most embarrassing thing I could dig up here on the forums, but it makes me laugh every time I read it. I would like to think I've come a long way since July 21st, 2011 and that I've matured as both a person and RPer, but I maybe some might think otherwise. Anyway, one might wonder why the hell I'm openly posting this and embarrassing myself. It's because what you see here is not very dissimilar from the apps being posted now, almost 5 years after this very shitty application, and I want to help out those applying now.

I'll be honest, when I joined this server I had no idea what the hell RP was. I was in Seventh grade and I was watching Minecraft videos right up with some Call of Duty videos. One day I saw PetriDaGamerNerd, who was a fairly popular YouTuber at the time, set up a big MC city in the Orc lands and then make a secret society, fighting the Undead and Humans. LoTC looked like the single most amazing video game one could ever play, and I immediately took action to get on it. Sparten4ever92 was a Minecraft account that belonged to one of my friends at the time, I literally stole the MC account to play on the server by getting his password and then locking him out of the account. I still don't know if he knows I'm the one who took it, but he eventually got it back and it's why I don't play on that account anymore.

Why is all of what I said above relevant? Because that story probably isn't too dissimilar from that of the new applicants, just replace PetriDaGamerNerd with Gizzy Gazza. These are kids who just want to try RP because the thing they saw on their favorite YouTuber's channel was so cool and they want to be a brave Knight or a mighty warrior or sneaky archer, just like their favorite superheroes or Youtuber or movie character. The point is, these kids just want to have fun and have an amazing experience just like I did. I imagine that many of you guys shared similar experiences when you first joined, but I ask you to put yourself in these people's shoes.

When I look around at the current LoTC community, I see a lot of hostility to the new players and fear that they'll swamp the community, bringing down the quality of roleplay.

I strongly disagree.

When I joined LoTC, I was lucky enough to have people who taught me how to RP and supported me, showing me how to do the little things. I don't see that nearly as much as I used to, but maybe I'm not looking. I've been trying to do this myself, and I think the contest that Telenir made is a step in the right direction. As a community, we ought to be trying to help these younger players grow as role-players by treating them well, having patience, and RPing with them as frequently as possible. Young people nowadays want to feel a sense of belonging and are quick to move on if they don't find that, it's why I think retention rates have been so low.

In my opinion, we as a whole need to become more open to new players and rather than push them because of their youth, recognize them for what they are: malleable, impressionable kids who WANT to RP and WANT to have great RP experiences. Rather than pushing them away, we ought to give them what they want.

I feel like I'm rambling now, it's late for me. Anyway, the point is that we need to help these new kids not push them away. If they're good enough to get accepted, they deserve that opportunity AT LEAST.

[BTW, it took me 6 Apps to get accepted. I posted 5 in the same day trying to get accepted and begged Availer to accept me in Wandering Soul chat. If a kid is being persistent, he/she really wants to be on this server, so they ought to be helped.]

I agree.

I was always for laxxin up the applications.

When I see so many denies, I get sad. I understand some, but damn. I seriously think they should at least lax things now mostly because I see it as a courtesy. I understand it can be cancer, but to be honest, if you want better player retention, just look at all of the denies in the log before this event, that's lost players right there too.

Reduce everything for apps this time around and have fun.

While I didn't write this with the intention of talking about app difficulty, I do agree with this to an extent. However, there is a higher standard of RP on this server than there was when I joined, so the increased difficulty maybe be necessary.

I see what you said and the current situation as the same thing to be honest.

I also don't believe that higher standard at this point and time should be a thing for these next few days or so. When we deny so many people who are new to this, it is understandable they will fail pretty badly, but that is why we should help them. I was accepted as a green Elf simply because I thought wood elves were actually the color of leaves.

That situation and yours applies here Pok, we do have a higher standard now, but what's the point if we don't show people how high we are if they are being stopped by an application? Yes, the application is there for a purpose but damn. This whole initiative is pretty much going to literally make no difference in the long run if we turn away just about everyone at our doorstep just for a definition or a lackluster bio.

I think I kept one detail from my application still....Meta had blue hair and did flowing sun.

Beyond that I've literally crafted a much more indepth story for my characters...just RPing.

Get people on the server and TEACH them...that's what we can do. Not everyone is a holy god of RP, and honestly we're all subpar RP'ers using MC as a basis. On forum RP two paragraphs are expected. Most RP on the server is a sentence or two.

Alright, I understand where you're coming from. I agree it should be a bit more relaxed, but I mean I've been looking over some of the applications and they're just as awful as my first one. However, I was given a TON of 1 on 1 help to make my app better, so I think that really served me well in the long run. More of that needs to occur for these kids.

A lot of it is happening. Idk if you're in the wandering soul chat often, but there are players in there who help new people with their apps 24/7. Today was a super busy day for that chat.

Yeah, I just hopped in now to check it out. Already talking to different wandering souls. Is very hectic indeed!

Yeah, I've read a few, but a few of them were denied for simply 'plagiarizing' a definition that has been said in so many ways already.

Everyone who has been on here for 2-3 years can't really RP that much these days anymore simply because of school and stuff, so something needs to be done in a way that could both help the server and help the new players in a way that we can pass the torch so to speak.

That was one of the reasons why I always wanted to be an AT on this server, everyone always seems so over zealous in applications that it hurts me. I like putting people on pending and helping no matter the cost and that's the kind of way people should treat it. Outright denying people should be changed to that you have to put someone on pending for at least an hour or two and helping them better understand stuff. It's hard, yes, but it comes with the job.
