An Ultimatum: Marius' Lament

Riding earnestly from a landing near Aleksandria, a stern looking courier bears a letter penned by the King of Haense himself, Marius I, addressed to the King Tobias Staunton.

To the court of King Tobias of Courland,

I come with no mind for pleasantries; you and your people find themselves quarrelling out of spite, attempting to breach the foundations of Haense. The two failed incursions that disrupted the peace of St. Karlsburg and the great vassals of the North today have shown the true colors of your people and the prevalent vice manifested amongst your kin.

Since the fall of the Empire, we have isolated ourselves in the Highlands of the North, unconcerned with the squabble of Southern politics, eyeing only progression as a people. We have sat idle for too long, allowing these grievous acts to go unpunished. I write to you unhindered and with utmost solemnity with the intention to reaffirm my grievances and those shared amongst my subjects at the unwarranted and barbaric acts committed by the House of Staunton and citizens of Courland against those of Haense. With earnestness, I convey my dismay at the disrespect and indecency undertaken by Courland. These godforsaken incursions upon the lands of the Highlander people are indubitably unjust to the eyes of men and GOD.

It is clear that the Kingdom of Courland shows no interest in pursuing the natural order of the rule of law and the peace that is most cherished, nor does His Majesty Tobias Staunton display any regard or sense of accountability to the actions taken upon by his kin and subjects. As an aforementioned remark between us as two kings, negligence is no excuse for the reckless behavior and unruly actions committed by your people by any means. Moreover, I am appalled to see the idle arm of action on the part of King Tobias in these blatant raids occurring within my respective borders. The criminal acts provoked by the Staunton aggressors shall be met with justice, whether it be your hand or mine.

What most startles me is the lack of denunciation or even a response suitable to the acts committed by King Tobias after the senseless murder of Count Boris Ruthern. Let it be known, that the young man came to Aleksandria to sue for peace and rectify the recent raids. He was to address earnestly the want for quick correspondence with the King of Courland. Nay. He never made it. The Count fell victim to the barbarians that lurk and reside in the streets of Aleksandria. What word did I receive? What missive or remark did King Tobias Staunton send for me? None. I was left with the silence of his negligence, the offense he takes credit for by default for his lack of regard to this most senseless and unjustifiable murder. Let this day be a testament to the ill-will that King Tobias shows. No notion of God or justice remains in the King of Courland’s mind, but the blood of a Haeseni noble.

We would hold you accountable for the actions of your people; rectification can be found with accordance to the following terms:

-Public acknowledgement and condemnation of the crimes committed against the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska

- A formal and public apology from King Tobias, made directly to His Majesty Marius I, for the actions of his men.

- Reparations in the form of ten thousand minae.

- An affidavit, pledging to halt all recruitment efforts within the Kingdom and her holdings.

-The formal resignation of the incumbent mayor of Aleksandria, Ser James Montoya.

Upon acceptance of the aforementioned terms, the Princess Annabel Staunton will be granted safe passage to Courland. If the terms are declined, accountability shall be vigilantly warranted pursuant to the actions undertaken.

Signed,

His Majesty the King Marius I of Hanseti and Ruska, Grand Prince of the Raev, Duke of Akovia, Krajia, Greymarsh and Alban, Margrave of Vanderfell and Adria, Count of Siegrad, Werdenburg, Kavat, Karovia, Torun, Owynswood and Kaunas, Defender of the Faith, Lord of St. Karlsburg, Protector of the Highlanders.

Rotger begins counting on his fingers what each side has done...

On one hand, murdering a prince in the streets who was sent as a diplomat, kidnapping two nobles and a princess, butchering one Lady with a mace, beheading the second peace envoy sent (a Horen, nonetheless) charging out to attack the force sent (ocne more sent with diplomatic intentions of acquiring the princess) and returning to Aleksandria to harass the uninvolved civilians ~ Haense.

On the other hand, raiding the Vanir keep and stealing five babies - oh wait, it was made clear he wasn't affiliated with Courland any more... Never mind - on the other hand, attempting to raid Karlsburg - oh wait, the Courlanders were attacked, and simply defended themselves - on the other hand, attacking the 'diplomat' sent of course with no intention whatsoever to attack the king, if he were to have been granted court, after Courland has already lost so many ~ Courland.

"And we're meant to be paying ten-thousand minas?

Amelia would snort at the reading of this before she would talk to herself

Let us see...Meric Staunton, me, Annabel Staunton, Philip Marna, the Rescue Party who wished to only speak in peace vs Boris Ruthern... Now I wonder who the true barbarians are, Haense!?

"Ehem, you forgot the backing of the Brawms, therefore breaking your own treaty. Illegal recruitment in our lands. Backing raiders by sending Courlander troops to aid them." Viktor would chuckle, presenting the Courlandic banners found with the raiding party

"Then threatening and murder Haesetian citizens. The fact your 'envoys' came in groups with drawn weapons. Also this is after we both had peace talks to end violence and openly stated we want no war. Also the man who killed your prince was not affiliated with the actions of our Kingdom."

Rotger wonders why he's having a civil (enough) conversation with Viktor before passive aggressively chuckling too. "The Brawms defenestrated one of our nobles, any Courlandic soldiers went against orders. The banners you present me in this neutral meeting ground (where is this?" he pauses as he puts the question through his mind, ") were stolen by the soldier we claim to have no affiliation with. So Haense is allowed to claim a royal murdered in their streets was not at their bidding when Hansettian nobles had put an axe to his back at the prior meeting, yet Courland is not allowed to claim disassociation from one rogue soldier? Typical hypocrisy. And we came to your gates with armour and shields, yet it was one of yours that attacked, and I don't think either party would be able to recall any of the 'threats' or 'murders' you describe so vaguely due to them being fabricated, PLUS I forgot to mention how you crucified some of OUR civilians a few months ago TOO, that being the reason Meric was in Karlsburg in the first damn place. The left hand of Haense apparently knows not what the right hand is doing, and vice versa."

"You miss the point here, Annabel and you are alive. Philip was not killed by us and Meric was killed by a haense rebel at the time." says Galahad

"And the raids that you claim started this whole thing were also done by a rebel from our ranks," he states, matter-of-factly for about the third time, "but you certainly weren't looking to make peace when you put a mace to Amelia de Savin's face."
