A Last Goodbye

A lone figure could be seen on a bed. The room around it seeming so out of fire while a lonely cry of a baby from a crib could be heard. A bloodied knife was placed in the heart of the cold body who seemed to have been dead for quite some hours. The bed and floor covered in a pool of red. Though to the left there could be seen a couple of letters stashed on the side. A last goodbye mayhaps?

The letters would be addressed with the names of loved ones...

To Abdes de Savin, a loved and caring father:

"Father,

I know this must seem like a shock to you when you hear of the news. I, who seemed so happy took my own life... It sounds unbelievable, does it not? Though it is true... You see, I was never truly happy after having lost my dearest brother, my cousin and my unborn child. I never told anyone but my husband of the last named loss. Though I always wonder. What colour would the child's hair be? What would be the colour of the child's eyes? How would the child's laugh sound? So many questions I have always asked myself when I lost my first child. Though I did give birth to 3 beautiful children... It never filled that hole I was missing. It was like I lost a piece of myself that could never be restored. I love you father, but this is my farewell. Help Romanos with my beloved children, and help him in this despair. You will both need it.

Signed,

Amelia Palaiologos."

To Romanos Palaiologos, my beloved and dearest husband:

"My husband, my darling... my one true love,

I know this will be very hard for you when you find my body on our bed. And I wish it had never come to this. No matter how hard I tried I could never shake the feeling of despair and agony I had after losing my brother and our unborn child. Why did they have to die? I ask myself this question every night. I know I am the reason I lost my child. I wish I could turn back time and take another choice that would have saved our child. But I was stupid and foolish, and that has been with me ever since. A burden I cannot bear to carry... I know I am taking the easy way out and that I am a coward for not continuing for you and our children. But after our fight I have been getting worse... I know you have forgiven me and I you. However I am choosing this for myself. It is not your fault, Romanos. Do not blame yourself for this that was my own choice. You could never have known how much pain I was carrying on my shoulders as I never told you. I wanted your memories of me to be happy ones. Which is why I chose to never tell you, though now you know... Farewell Romanos Palaiologos, my first love. Take care of our children for me. I wish you happiness and acceptance if you wish to marry another woman.

Your darling,

Amelia Palaiologos."

The body of Amelia Palaiologos could be seen on the bed. For she had taken her own life with a knife as she could not handle the pain she had been feeling for so many years. Though she would have had many years left to live... this seemed like the end of it. A loved daughter, mother, friend and wife now gone from this cruel world.

Artemis surely would never see her mother in this state, she would be too busy trying to eat something she shouldn't, as did most young children.

She would be unable to comprehend her mothers passing, and would for the longest time be waiting for her to return.

But she would grow up to remember a loving mother whom she simply wished she could spend more time with.

Upon the discovery of Amelia's death, the Duchy of Savinia would post an official obituary regarding her demise:

Quote

The Most Honourable, Amelia Palaiologos, OE, Marchioness of Valencia and Baroness of Hagios Lothar, who has passed away at the tender age of 28 on the 22nd of The Grand Harvest, 1613, was an outstanding member of the House de Savin, and loving wife and mother of three.

Her selfless contributions to the establishment of the Duchy of Savinia is nothing less than the pinnacle of human society, having directly supported the financial needs of its initial assembly and continued to carry its burdens through times of war.

Such deeds saw rightful rewards over time, garnering the love and support of many, she was appointed a member of the Order of Eminence, and was later on created the revered peerage of Marchioness of Valencia.

She was such a loving soul, emitting an aura of warmth endearment amongst those around her, and touching all those with her kind heart, but it was tragedy that even the weight of her cousin’s death encumbered her for the duration of her time.

Amelia Palaiologos will be deeply missed, and shall be succeeded in death: by her husband Romanos Palaiologos, GML, KTF, OE, Baron of Hagios Lothar; by her eldest son, Demetrios Palaiologos, now Marqués of Valencia; by her youngest son, Tobias Palaiologos; and by her daughter, Artemis Palaiologos.

Romanos would be the first to discover Amelia's body, after a hard and long day training the reformed army of Courland. Before opening the door, he would hear the cries of baby Tobias, raising an eyebrow and opens the door to his room. He would notice the cold body of Amelia on their bed, where they shared many moments together, good and bad. Romanos would quickly rush to her body with tears overwhelming his eyes while they drop on Amelia's body. He would remove the knife from her heart and quickly turns to hug her for a last time, as tight as he could and kisses her cheek before he'd begin to whisper in her ear. "My Amelia... why you... you promised me we would raise our children and grandchildren together... we were meant to die together due to old age. How am I supposed to bear this... what will I tell to the children who didn't have the chance to get to know you, especially poor Tobias who is only two years old... I have failed you, and I'm sorry for the times I hurt you, and for our stupid little fight... I would sacrifice everything I have in order to spend more time with you, please... forgive me for our fight, all I ever wanted in this life was you... even if you beat me once with a broomstick..." Romanos would slightly chuckle, although the tears would never stop coming out of his eyes. "I would do anything to bring you back, even if you'd beat me again with the broomstick, I would care not. Forgive me for the times I was not here to help you, I will never forgive myself for this. I want you to know you meant everything to me, you are the only woman I ever loved and ever will. Please, save a spot for me next to you, for I will meet you very soon, I cannot live without you. Our children is the only reason I'm not taking my life right here, right now." Romanos would then kiss her cheek for a last time and turns his head to small Tobias, who has stopped crying and fell asleep. He would be looking around whilst shaking his head as if he's having a nightmare, one he could never wake up from, until he noticed the letters and picks them up, opening the one with his name on it and begins to read carefully, although his newly spawned tears would fall on the paper now as he reaches the end of the letter. He'd close the letter and puts it in his pocket. Romanos would hug once again Amelia's dead body and whispers into her ear again. "I-I... made you make such decision because of... our stupid fight... I tried my best to make you forget about the death of our unborn child and the death of your brother, and I have... failed... but why did you have to take your own... life...? Did you think of... our children before you do that? Why..." Romanos would kiss her forehead and slowly stands up, walking towards the exit before he'd turn around and stare into Amelia's body and begins to talk. "Now I needed you the most... I never had the chance to tell you... but I will most likely devote my life to the robe, Amelia... I will miss you greatly..." He would wipe off his tears, but more and more would spawn as he couldn't hold them back. He would inform the Duchy of Savinia about the death of Amelia shortly after he left the room and delivers the letter addressed to his father-in-law to himself.

Klaus I de Savin mourns the loss of his dearest cousin, as he heard the news, "How unfortunate. . . I might not have had good relations with the rest of the family, and you were most definitely my favorite of the kinsmen, rest peacefully, darling."

Along ways away, on a different continent, a man who once knew Amelia lights a candle in his chapel. He watches the flame burn, the wax slowly dripping down, and remembers the girl he met so many years ago.

He does not cry, for her memory is too distant. But as the candle flickers and dies, he feels an empty sorrow, knowing he will never again see the beautiful, charming girl who once enchanted him.

"Goodbye, Amelia."

Demetrios Palaiologos would cry on his bed, remembering his loving mother. He would think back on her stories, her songs, her hugs, her kisses. He would forever miss his mother, the most important person to his world. He would later understand why she did it, but it wouldn't change the fact that he wished he'd knew earlier, so he could stop it. Demetrios would never stop thinking of his mother.
