Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your *******. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

A simple yet peaceful song for a simple yet peaceful race, Hobbits, commonly known as halflings to the roleplaying world. The song is one of the most peaceful songs I can imagine, with only extremely peaceful and intense classical works rivaling it's beauty.

Also, The song below is another one of my favorites...

I believe trap music and especially Uzi get a lot of flack mainly from other hip hop gurus and I understand that a slapping 808 and talk about money, drugs, cars and women etc isn't the key to artistic genius but I would like to talk about XO Tour Llif3.

The beat

There's not a whole lot I can say about this track that isn't said in this video. However, I have to say the way that TM88 made his own sample and reworked it into XO Tour Llif3 with minimal equipment and a beats pill is special.

Similarly to songs like 'Mask Off' I feel like the way producers can take simple and exotic samples and add an 808 to them isn't as cheesy as it is made out to be. I feel that it definately can be done poorly, but in this songs instance, it brings out another energy from the ominous mysterious sample synonymous with Uzi's style.

Lyrics

Although it has those trap elements are very much present in this songs lyrics, I find it almost depressingly fitting. Uzi talks about these things such as Xanax whilst also commentating that 'It keeps control of me.'

Although I will admit that this isn't a new concept, but it's fresh to see the horrors of a rap lifestyle not been rapped about in either a glorifying or demeaning light. Unlike artists like Kendrick who seemingly rap about the lifestyle because of it's toxicity, Uzi raps about it as a parallel to his life.

This is what I find particularly interesting on this track, that Uzi raps about his trap lifestyle like it's neither good or bad. Yet he's so incredibly aware of what it's doing to him. Even going so far as to say he'd kill himself yet never saying that he hates being like that.

Artistic expression

Uzi has always been seen as a sort of weird and emoish trap rapper, which is evidently clear by his influences in Gucci Mane and Marilyn Manson. This has been explored more and more in his forefront songs.

The beat itself blends the trap 808 slapping beat with a weird mysterious sample, blending the two. This shows how this particular wave of expression can be done.

The lyrics again blend that common elements of trap lifestyle along with the gritty realism, with no moral message attached like 'This is bad!' simply a expression of Uzi's view on life saying 'I can't die, It's my universe.' Again a blend of that trap and unique expression.

Finally the flow, the idea to blend high vocals and rapping interlocked rather than exclusively for a chorus is risky, but Uzi blends it in again, the trap flow, riding the beat, but every now and again giving it his own unique sing. It's a recurring theme, that in every element of the track Uzi reworks the trap format, he doesn't follow it, inbedding his own personal expression within it.

Summary

I think on a face front it's extremely easy to push this track off as a mindless trap banger.

I personally believe this is an amazing mix of artistic creativity within a very popular genre.

I believe Uzi used the platform of trap as a way of getting his unique style and commentary out.

I believe it's extremely easy to express your art style easily through music. What I believe to be the touch if a genius is to be able to express yourself and for the song to also hit top charts.

To be be able to show your artistic excellence and also create and anthem in a rigid genre is extremely impressive. I believe that Uzi is a genius and XO Tour Llif3 is a masterpiece.
