A Thesis on the Dark

-By the Immortal Loreholder.

“In times of yore, times from which many of us dreamed of being alive, the Arch Daemon cursed our lands with foul beasts and equally foul arts. The Undead of Iblees, the Harbingers and beyond are all dangers of legend that have faded with time. Long since, the arts we curse and disgrace have changed purpose drastically.

In Axios, or in Atlas itself, you can already note the difference in the behaviour regarding the tainted and the weavers. They no longer seek the destruction of the Descendants, but rather they seclude themselves in their own covens, one in the Tainted Mountain, and the Temple of Xion, epicenter of the followers of the Old Dark; Xionism. Never have I seen such quiet, passive dark. And fret not, t’is not a problem. In my thoughts, I see the weavers and all the others thought-to-be dark arts practicioners as trying to help us. Aid us from the claws of the Gods and their blind servants. Tahariae, Xan, Aeriel. All of these from which come Clerics, Paladins and Ascended respectfully. These blind followers, these maleficar were the ones that aided Gazardiel on Axios, on his quest to purge the land from Descendant filth.

These are the ones you must fret, good men and women of Atlas. Not the Old Dark, not the weavers, tainted and victims of undeath. These maleficar are snakes. They seek nothing but the destruction of those afflicted, in pain. They seek naught to try and help those by reverting what caused their ultimate fate. They only seek death and destruction to all those that are not in the standards they have established. I see reasoning, of course, in fearing the taint, the dark. I myself do. Though I must re-assure; Iblees is a danger of yore, only to be feared in history books.

One mustn’t instantly relate a weaver, a tainted being to be instantly a servant of Iblees. I, a graven, wizened with time, am myself a Xionist. I can assure whoever wants re-assurance, that I not only do not follow Iblees, but despise his actions against my once-brethren, the descendants. His actions sought destruction to all we knew, and possibly even to the arts you curse and disgrace.

This is all I have to say on the Dark, the victims of undeath and the supposed ‘Light’, maleficar, blind servants under hungering Gods."

An armoured man, his face filled with countless scars that he carried, uncovered, shakes this head of his, the note bringing not even a tiny bit of humour to him. "Why do we still see those wretched corpses halt travellers, travelling by roads, by foor or by horse, then, if you claim for them to be so passive?" It would be like he'd be talking to the poster, yet he also spoke to himself, milling over the writing. "Why DO the undead halt travellers, I wonder? If not for coin, for wherever could they use it, is it for pleasure? For feasting? I've heard defenders of the corpses claim they can feed off of critters and roots. Why hunt women and children when your next meal is literally BY the corner?" He'd lean forward, holding his head cupped, the right hand grasping his beard as he mulled the note further. "As for Ascended," he concluded, folding his arms before him and spitting, letting things go unmentioned.

"Stay in your temple and end up killing each other again, it's funnnier to see how this passive state will last. Tahariae's light this is why I hate dead things, they can't bloody think!"

A cleric roars in laughters.

"And don't lump the Ascended's mistakes as our own you blasphemous fiend."

The cleric would scratch the back of his head, slightly confused.

"I really don't see unnatural creatures healing injured descendents, quite often they tend to be the reason for those injuries."

He wouldn't have been speaking to anyone in particular, more so just talking to himself.

"It's not like clerics heal most injuries ranging from a ruptured organ to a severed arm for free or anything like that."

He'd then shrug and go back to reading a book.

A respond to the thesis would soon come to light.

"To say the darkness are helping the descendants is a risky claim to make yet I do understand such. I am aware there are those who use the dark arts as a mean to assist others, through discovering ways to aid and heal without relying on the Aengudaemons. To bring forth a power that does not place any as a servant. I truly respect those who embrace the darkness for such. Yet: To claim passiveness despite a number of the darkness halting travellers and force curses, wounds, and death upon them makes the darkness appear ignorant in the eyes of the descendants, that you believe fully that the darkness is right. No matter what, there will always be those of darkness who will harm descendants, even if some of the darkness truly do aid them. The dark arts offer a power that can change the mind, and even if someone intends to use the arts for good intentions, their mind may become warped and their intentions sadly twisted. No matter what, there will be those of darkness who will harm others, so the darkness is not entirely good and willing to aid people."

"In my time, I have seen moments where followers of the Aengudaemons have caused more trouble and harm to the descendants, whenever willingly or not. Many of them have paid the price for their actions, but all aware of the stake and accepted such. Yes, we do serve the Aengudaemons but not for power, not because we were forced to. But because it was a choice we made, just like the darkness. Despite the actions of some of the Light, not all of the Light  seeks to cause trouble to the descendants: there are some Clerics who use their light to only heal the wounds of those close to death's doors, giving them another chance to live without causing them harm.  Some Ascended who focus more on healing souls that have been unwillingly tarnished by curses, to free the descendant from curses they did not want to bear. Some Paladins who defend and protect the descendants from the Dragonkin, rather than the Dark, who seek to harm mortals, protecting settlement from harm. Even if we are following a patron, not all of the Light desire to manipulate the descendants because we're cruel and twisted, as you believe we are - for there are those who want the exact same as the darkness who use their powers with the intentions to aid the descendants. There are people in both light and darkness who use different means but hold the similar intentions, which is mostly to aid others in life.

The powers of Light and Darkness can be used for both good and bad purposes, to aid and to destroy. Both can safe a life, and can end one. The methods are different but in the end, it depends on the intentions of those who wield such power. A necromancer may intend to do good, a Cleric may intend to do bad. Yet within this world, the darkness is seen as cruel due to many descendants holding past issues with the dark. Just as those of darkness see the light as cruel due to the same issues. The darkness will never be fully deemed as good due to the past, but light will always hold its dark moments. In the end, light and darkness are two sides of the same coin, trapped in an eternal cycle that we call life. A natural cycle that will keep going and should accept will never change, for both sides need the other to keep balance. Light and Darkness will forever be at odds at each other,  no matter how much we try to change the scales through placing the descendants against one another. This is the sad truth."

The bronzed plated Judge crumpled the document into his hand, and tossed it into the fire as to quell his distaste.  The metallic helmet groaned with a shake of Sataric's head.

"There is a larger issue at hand than the Maleficar, though their time shall come after they have grown fat and lazy, fathering spawn that are just as rotten and overzealous.  They likely grow more restless than those of the Way; for now, we let their acclimation to times of peace begin their downfall."

He seated himself, staring idly into a small candle.  It flickered in a melody of nigh absent heat.  For something meant to be untamed, here it was, at the mercy of the wick, at the mercy of the Dark.  Its pitiful flame danced along to the song that was sung, one that could only be performed before shadows of its own making.  There was no heat it could give, and there was little light it could offer.  A candle is nothing but a flame waiting to spill over and consume without darkness offer its purpose.

His quill dipped into an inkwell, breaking the deafening silence.  Dch.  Dch.  It scraped against a piece of parchment in a hypnotic rhythm.  He mulled over these thoughts, etching them delicately into his journal.  A loud thump marked the end of this as he shut the book and rose once more from his seat.

"Evil creatures are supposed to kill and be evil. If they're not being evil, there's clearly something stupid going on."

"Oh.. It's that slave religion again."  The speaker would quickly be distracted, sharing the missive with her closest friend while she continues to speak. "Why is he calling us Maleficar? Don't we heal the innocent at great cost to ourselves? Xionists cause most of these wounds.."

Ravondir clapped his hands together after reading such, lips smacking as he looked it over again. He took in a deep sigh before beginning his rant,

"Y'know, we tried that once. The world misunderstood, a uninformed Ascended wrote a pamphlet, and we were assaulted by the Descendants for our attempt at aiding the Dark. We were forced to our outright purging of the Dark. I cannot speak for the others, but that is what happened to the Ascended. We've made our mistakes, undeniably huge mistakes that cost lives, and I understand the flak we've received for it.

However, you cannot tell me that the 'Old Dark' and the Xionists are less of a threat than those of the Light. There is a band of dark ilk that prowl the land, swiping up people off of the streets like old fairytales. I have been attacked by the likes of the Xionists many-a-time for the fact that I am what I am, and our retaliation is shown through our battles.

You cannot, and will make us out to be the villains when I see people dead or injured due to forces of the Dark. I see that Necromancy can be utilized to heal someone literally torn in half, but where do they get these Necromancers get their fuel from? The Darkstalkers, Liches and Morghuuls that endlessly hunger for lifeforce- where do they get their fix?

On the Ascended's behalf, I say we attempted to aid you once, but experiences with the Descendants have forced us to do otherwise. But I'm just some old fart that's barely been around... what say do I have in the matter?"
