argonian 12848 Popular Post Share Posted December 15, 2021 A Timeline of Recent Events As these past two years have been so chaotic I already can't keep track of what has happened, I've made the first draft of a timeline of notable events in the build-up of hostilities between the major powers, and the lead-up to this great war. I shall endeavour to update it as events progress, and amend any mistakes made in it so far, if they are pointed out to me. - Jurgen Barclay. 1849 Spoiler SNOW’S MAIDEN 16th of Snow’s Maiden, 1849 An ISA officer, Duncan Vuiller, and his men attack two young dwarves passing through Oren. They assert these were two Ireheart raiders, whereas Urguan insist these were peaceful travellers. Dwarven diplomats are sent to Oren to attempt to resolve the issue. Around the same time the Battle of the River Petra takes place: Hearing reports of Ireheart and Ferrymen raiders in Orenian territory, an ISA unit led by Sir Arthur Gendik-Komnenos and Duke Thomas Helvets march to the bank of the River Petra. The Irehearts, taken by surprise, having only expected forward scouts, are heavily outnumbered and swiftly defeated. Orenian Victory. MALIN’S WELCOME 11th of Malin’s Welcome, 1849 The Prince of Savoy, Olivier Renault, invites Prince Philip Amadeus of Oren, grandson of the reigning Emperor Philip II, and his wife to stay at the Palazzo Aggarde. While a seemingly mundane invite at the time, the relationship forged here proves significant going forward. THE FIRST SEED 13th of the First Seed, 1849 After a breakdown in negotiations, the Grand King of Urguan issues an ultimatum to the Holy Orenian Empire, demanding the hand-over of Duncan Vuiller and a payment of 3,000 mina in return for peace. 16th of the First Seed, 1849 The Holy Orenian Emperor responds to the dwarven ultimatum, rejecting it and declaring a state of war between the two countries. 17th of the First Seed, 1849 The Battle of Ephesius takes place: Urguani-aligned forces under the command of Gaspard van Aert attempt an assault on the Imperial Elven town of Ephesius, but find it better garrisoned than they expected. The Orenians, led by Erik var Ruthern, successfully repel the attack and the survivors flee into the forest. Orenian victory. THE GRAND HARVEST 10th of the Grand Harvest, 1849 The heir to the Holy Orenian Empire, Prince Philip Aurelian, passes away. 11th of the Grand Harvest, 1849 The Battle of St. James takes place: Utak and Durorn Ireheart march towards the new capital of Oren with a force of 1,200 dwarves. An ISA regiment of 2,300 men sally out to meet them. Despite their vast numerical disadvantage, the dwarves manage to drive the Orenians back into the city, inflicting heavy casualties. The Urguani troops return home almost unscathed. Dwarven victory. Later that same day, Philip Amadeus, with the backing of Savoy, declares himself Holy Orenian Emperor, issuing an ultimatum to his grandfather. This same day, Emperor Philip II and his Archchancellor vanish, with conflicting reports as to whether they were killed by dwarves, rebels, or if they simply just escaped. The armies of Philip Amadeus, supported by those of the Prince of Savoy march into the city of St. James. Philip is crowned as Emperor Philip III by High Pontiff Everard VI. THE SUN’S SMILE 4th of the Sun’s Smile, 1849 The Prince of Savoy abdicates his throne to take up a position as Vice Chancellor of the new Holy Orenian Emperor. His son, Olivier Laurene de Savoie, inherits. This move leaves Savoy in an uncertain state, with its fealty or lack thereof to the Empire left up-in-the-air. 19th of the Sun’s Smile, 1849 With the deposition of Philip II, the dwarves proclaim victory over the Holy Orenian Empire. THE AMBER COLD 11th of the Amber Cold, 1849 Emperor Philip III, incensed at the dwarven invasion and declaration of victory, issues his own ultimatum, demanding 50k mina and the ceding of human-inhabited lands in the north of Urguan. Hostilities between the two nations recommence immediately. THE DEEP COLD 17th of the Deep Cold, 1849 The new Prince of Savoy holds his coronation, inviting the Pontiff to crown him, before shockingly announcing the deposition of Everard VI with the backing of the Holy Orenian Emperor. The Pontiff is evacuated from the throne room by a Haeseni battalion in attendance. Oren and Savoy declare their own High Pontiff, Michael I, while Haense maintains its support for Everard IV, marking the beginning of a schism in Canondom. 1850 Spoiler SNOW’S MAIDEN 6th of Snow’s Maiden, 1850 High Pontiff Everard VI grants Sigismund III, King of Hanseti-Ruska, the title of Fidei Defensor, revoking it from the Holy Orenian Emperor for his role in the schism. Shockingly, just hours later, Oren officially withdraws from the schism, condemning their own Pontiff, Michael I. MALIN’S WELCOME 12th of Malin’s Welcome, 1850 The Prince of Savoy agrees to abandon the schism, and is called to march to Karosgrad, the capital of Haense, barefoot in rags to receive his penance. There he is ordered to remove his religious advisor, Aubergine de la Baltas, from his Privy Council and to replace him with Cardinal Fiodor of Allobrogum. Accepting this, and kneeling to kiss the Pontiff’s ring and ask for forgiveness, his excommunication is lifted. 14th of Malin’s Welcome, 1850 The Battle of Jarad's Tavern takes place: A dwarven night raid ends in the kidnapping of Joseph d’Azor and the burning of the St. James Clocktower. Dwarven victory. 20th of Malin’s Welcome, 1850 Orenian forces raid the capital of Urguan in the dead of night, capturing the Grand King and shaving his beard, before releasing the humiliated dwarven king. Orenian victory. THE FIRST SEED 15th of the First Seed, 1850 The Holy Orenian Emperor embarks on his own march to Karosgrad. Agreeing to place Cardinal August of Providentia on his Council of State and give his youngest child to the Church, his excommunication too is lifted. With this, and the apparent disappearance of Michael I, the schism is ended. THE SUN’S SMILE 6th of the Sun’s Smile, 1850 Copies of an assassination contract are spread across the Empire, allegedly authored by the hand of Empress Anastasia, and requesting the death of her husband’s father–Philip Aurelian. Allegations are made that Philip III and his wife conspired to kill his father so that they could take the throne, however the Imperial Government denounces the letter as a forgery, insisting that the Emperor’s father died of natural causes. 7th of the Sun’s Smile, 1850 The Battle of Stone Tower takes place: Following the kidnapping of Archchancellor Minuvas, relayed to the Orenians by delivery of the elf’s own ear, the ISA march forth to rescue their head of government. Lured by the trap of a small promontory force, the Orenian cavalry break formation and charge, seeking to catch their opponents before they can flee behind fortifications. This proves fatal, however, when a much larger Urguani force lying in wait springs forth and assaults the disorganised Orenians. What ensues is a bloodbath. The Archchancellor is later released, albeit mutilated. Dwarven victory. THE AMBER COLD 11th of the Amber Cold, 1850 The Prince of Savoy affirms Savoyard independence from the Holy Orenian Empire. 12th of the Amber Cold, 1850 Conspirators within the Savoyard government and the Blackwald Company, including Leufroy Renault (brother of the Prince) and Lord Marshal Edmond de Rouen, attempt to overthrow the Prince and seize power within Savoy. With the aid of relieving forces from Haense, Urguan and their allies, the coup is beaten back and its ringleaders flee the city. Rumours abound about possible Orenian involvement, as retribution for the affirmation of independence. The Orenian Government denies this unequivocally. Also implicated is the Prince's father himself, accused by some of trying to overthrow his own son and replace him with his brother. THE DEEP COLD 6th of the Deep Cold, 1850 Oren expels the Haeseni Ambassador, among other Haeseni nobles, for allegedly watching but failing to intervene in the dwarven torture of an Orenian. Haense warns Oren that following through with this would be treated as a breach of their Non-Aggression Pact. 11th of the Deep Cold, 1850 Urguan enters into alliances with Norland and Haense. Urguan signs a contract with the Ferryman. An ultimatum is issued by all parties, demanding the unconditional surrender of the Holy Orenian Empire. Their forces begin their march before their message even arrives. 15th of the Deep Cold, 1850 Everard VI promulgates the Pontifical Bull Poenitentia Incompleta, declaring Philip III, his wife, and Olivier Renault excommunicated and anathema. He orders them to abdicate. 1851 Spoiler SNOW'S MAIDEN 13th of Snow's Maiden, 1851 Oren signs contracts securing the military aid of the Daelish and the Sons of Nagg. MALIN'S WELCOME 11th of Malin's Welcome, 1851 The Sons of Nagg betray their employers in Oren, switching sides and signing a contract with Haense, before turning cloak again and signing a new contract with Oren. That same day, the Daelish also switch sides, signing with Haense, while Oren secures the support of the Icathian Company. 18th of Malin's Welcome, 1851 The Battle of Rivia takes place: Mercenaries aligned with Urguan take to the roads outside Providence, seeking to starve the city by raiding any imports thereto. Their looting is short-lived however, when the garrison of St. James sally forth to meet them. Outnumbered, the mercenaries seek to retreat, but unbeknownst to then, part of the garrison had split off and looped around behind them. Encircled, they're made quick work of by the ISA. A portion of the sellswords manage to escape, but others, including the son of the late Marquis of Myrine, are taken back to St. James and put to death. Orenian Victory.

Nevertheless, he never actually said a single dwarf was killed. Miraculous choice of words. What a natural historian.
