Penned by Konstantin Aleksander von Theonus

in the year 1939.

ON THIS DAY, THE FIRST OF THE GRAND HARVEST,

A force of warriors, reeking of rotten flesh and death descended upon the hamlet of Faubourg outside of the city of Vallagne. At first, a metallic clanging came from the nearby woods from the plate and chainmail the attacking force donned, signalling the impending danger. Those present within the village, a small force of Marignan partisans, rallied together to meet this incoming force. Sending one of their own, Theoderic von Theonus, to alert the garrison of Vallagne and summon reinforcements as they held Faubourg. This was not without aid, however, as two mages of the Hokhmat Enclave appeared shortly after and lent their support without question, joining the defenders as the denizens of the hamlet took shelter within their homes.

Shouts of “FOR HYDRA!” rang out amidst a demonic war cry uttered by one of the attacking forces’ number. A general assault upon the hamlet began then, as the two forces charged one another, the forces of the Cult splitting in two around Faubourg’s center in hopes of flanking the defenders. Shortly thereafter, a general melee occurred in the street as the Petrans attempted to hold Faubourg against the Hydra Cultists. The attack was led by what the Hokhmati mages would later describe as a Darkstalker. Cultists were met with a torrent of flame from one of the Hohkmati Sorcerers as they circled around the pillar to great effect, their advance halted for the time being by this inferno. As the battle lines were met, it was evident this was to be a hard-fought day. Neither side gave an inch of ground in the opening few moments, as axes thumped against shields and the cries of battle rang out throughout the hamlet.

As the clash commenced, one figure loomed large behind the force of Hydra Cultists and its Darkstalker. A masked figure ominously stood atop a nearby hillock. As he supervised the attack, the figure began to yell out to the defenders that the ongoing hunt for the Sisters of Petra was merely the beginning of his plan. The figure went on to decry the Church of the Canon, stating that his sinister forces would topple the Church and the realms of Aevos, rendering all to be slaves to this dastardly foe. With each false word spouted, a black fog emanated from the figure’s hand, killing all plant life surrounding him. The figure’s words fell upon deaf ears, as the pious Petrans put up a spirited defence around the center of the hamlet, ignoring the words of this false prophet.

It was then that Theoderic returned with reinforcements from the Red Bastion of the Riverguard. Without hesitation, these brave souls crashed into the flames and chaos on the Cult’s left flank to great effect as this began to mark a shift in the battle in favor of the Commonwealth. As the clash continued, it was evident the Cult’s fortunes had begun to wane. What began as a small force, surprised and outnumbered, now became a force as strong as the current of the River Petra herself.

One by one, each of the attacking force was slain as the defenders of Faubourg gradually encircled the remaining Cultists around the very center they themselves had tried to flank. Until at last, one remained; the ever-defiant undead warrior, Deadmund. His decaying skull staring back defiantly at those who now surrounded him with abject hatred and malice. Blow after blow rained down upon this servant of Iblees, yet he did not fall. Even as he was set aflame from within by the skillful attack of a Hokhmati Sorcerer he did not falter. It was only with a final round of blows to the now burning warrior’s skull that he was slain. The Petrans stood victorious amidst the carnage this battle had wrought upon the hamlet of Faubourg, now littered with the corpses of those slain.

What occurred to the being who preached of the destruction of the Church, Aevos, and indeed all Descendants is unknown. It appears he fled as reinforcements began to turn the tide of battle. As he was not amongst the dead counted shortly after. A small party of riders was sent in search of their whereabouts, though they returned with nothing of note. What we are certain of, however, is the strength shown this day. Let this be a warning, that the Commonwealth shall tenaciously defend its realm and those within from harm at the hands of those who consort with Iblees.

Deadmund bones would rattle.

[!] In the outskirts of The Commonwealth a skeleton warrior rose once more. It would take out a bone out of his body before proceeding
to hit its rib cage. . . a melody could be heard in the distance.
