Roleplay Style and Dialogue

Hello friends and fans

This post is to discuss a cultural change I've seen on this server from what I was used to regarding specifically spoken language in character. This overlaps with the marvel-quipping and quirky character stuff only regarding where this idea comes from.

I have seen a massive increase in modern-age dialogue from people on this server. I don't mean people talking in casual prose, or even just using contractions. I mean people using modern terms like 'girlfriend' or 'ex' which stick out like a sore thumb. Small, innane things that might not really get a second glance. When people 'fire' an arrow instead of loosing it. These are just examples of things I see regarding modern language and the like, obviously you can use these terms in roleplay as they can make sense in the world, but I just see it and immediately lose immersion. "Yeah that guy's just a dude behind a screen" type shit.

In this same vein, I also see many MANY people who insert themselves as the main character in every conflict possible. Bar fights never happen anymore, everyone gets involved. Everyone's a guard, so everyone attacks the darkspawn. When dialogue happens, many times, much more than before people roleplay two conversations at once. The flow of conversation becomes weird, and two people talking to one person starts to clog the chat, makes things unclear and again takes me out of the world.

Also I hate when people say their ooc thoughts in their emote

Also I hate meme rp when serious rp is going on in the same little area

Also I hate how much looc is spammed when anything cool happens irply

Also I hate people who use maw to describe their mouth, hues to describe their eyes, or over emote eyebrow movement.

That is all, have a good day.

I also hate people who reddit chungus respond on forum posts for rep

Isn’t this the guy that got Scion nerfed?

But yes, he makes a good point. I remember getting into bar fights with my friend Brayden and having cool narrative moments from a crowd watching and passively roleplaying watching the “entertainment.” Nowadays a bar fight turns into a IRP and OOC game of chess.

Though PC, /chatfocus exists. But I still agree with you.

Ik this is a PCSwift post but I still feel obligatory to add my thoughts

The "marvel-ification" IMO seems pretty much a consequence of the over-saturation of conflict on the server. As annoying as it is when people's first response to "There's a demon" is "Ooh time to kill :D", there really is no natural response when there's something violent every other day. My own character was originally intended to be fairly sensitive, but simply existing in the setting has caused her to begin regarding death and violence very nonchalantly. People making quips and joking in the face of violence, is just another extension of this "over-saturation" of violence.

I personally, coming from various RP servers, find modern use of language nothing more than very minor pet peeve. The use of modern language is more common in RP than the absence of it, it's just more natural for people. My preference is for RP cultures to use non-modern language, but it's really not a huge deal.

Taking issue with "firing" an arrow is silly though. VERY silly. And the word "hues". If you want to pick a word that is stupid it's "orbs".
All the other things are just basic RP etiquette of respecting the tone of the scene and other people's RPs.

Gramercy, yonder prattle doth chafe my senses with such ungeasoned parlance! ‘Tis woe enow when one’s co-mates prattle of ‘exes’ and ‘girlfriends,’ their speech bereft of aught kenning to this realm. Would they but eschew such modern frippery! Aye, forsooth, I am afeared that each ‘maw’ and ‘hue’ doth rend the veil of our fair mumming. I beseech ye all, let us restore our speech to words more fitting and let not our revels become a witless mummer’s farce.

zoomerism culture shift that won’t be addressed because the role models of old are nonexistent and they’re left to tackle through the memes that they’re constantly surrounded by.

good that you’ve pointed it out now how do you actually address this on a level that creates change

[Obligatory joke reply too lazy to type one]

But for real, idk if I'm just stupid but I chalk most of the issues up to the 'Gamification' of LotC. The only thing that 'technically' & mechanically matters if the Nation you are apart of has activity, regardless of quality behind the Roleplay going on in the Nation. If most people were willing to stand on some principle of making a decent space to provide people the ability to make RP, instead of chasing numbers for the sake of numbers the server would be a different place. I've seen and heard people get blasted OOCly for decisions they've made IRP, people get called r slurs over basic CRP that has no real stakes because both sides will monk respawn anyway, and I just don't understand why as a leader, you'd allow such miserable people run out decent people from your community. All that to say its difficult for anyone to put in the effort to try and make compelling characters and stories only to be blasted OOCly and treated with little or no respect because people are more focused on a 'game' rather than a narrative and having OOC consequences for doing what your character does in roleplay (sometimes even think lol), which leads to an issue where Roleplay standards drop in an understandable way, I can't imagine anyone willing to type out detailed and meaningful emotes if they're going to get ignored and 'marvel-quipped' at, nobody is going to type out decent emotes if they believe the other side is operating even slightly OOC or in poor faith. The only real way to bring a change and only at a minor level is to always try put out the best you can.

The only other option, I look at groups within LotC like tables, everyone at the table has their own preferences, likes and dislikes, views on RP and LotC and how it should be, then RP styles. If you don't enjoy the table you're at, you can try and change it, but there is plenty of other ones you can move to or even try make your own if that doesn't work out. Staff solution is higher quality on Whitelist apps (because some of them straight up are really, really bad) and some form of intervention to encourage better Roleplay, however, it comes down to if the time to do such is worth it.

Do you get an exception if your character does infact have a rather monstrous "maw" that they use to chew people and all that to begin with? : >

A bit more seriously; I honestly doubt that this wasn't also an issue in the past. This a "Medieval fantasy" setting and as far as I am aware that has usually lead to people picturing themselves as a Valiant Protector of Mankind that beats up the dragon and gets the Prince as their BF or something. People seeing themselves as the main character is barely a new thing, it infact has been historically such a big issue that may or may not have been solely responsible for all of human history turning out as it did.

Same with powergamers, bad faith actors, min maxers and obviously people that have a hard time fully immersing themselves into purely RPing. I doubt this could ever be a "new" development that only the silly new players are doing.

When the old players think they are superior and are generally known as an ******* in the community, that's why nobody cares to listen to old players like you...
