Tʜɪꜱ ɪꜱ ᴀ ᴍᴀʀʀɪᴀɢᴇ ᴘɪᴇᴄᴇ ʙᴇᴛᴡᴇᴇɴ Kᴀɴɪ ᴀɴᴅ Bʟᴏᴏᴅ Mᴀɢɪᴄ. 

I was approached a few months back by @Holyland with the intent of collabing to create a Blood Magic & Kani marriage piece, something which we wanted to do back then, but lost motivation for back then (it was also what made me play Blasphemous, peak game). Though recently, @StingyParrot and I have taken up this project- and in all, I think we’ve done a great job together for our first collab piece, likely of many to come. For this piece, I took a novel formatting style to it- actually trying to do something unique rather than rehash Werew0lf’s formatting styles in new ways, so I hope you all enjoy reading.

L ᴀ́ ɢ ʀ ɪ ᴍ ᴀ Tʜᴇ Bʟᴏᴏᴅʏ Sᴛʀᴇᴀᴍ   The realization of power within your own being is often startling to those who learn of Blood Magic and its capabilities, to weave and accumulate the genus within one’s blood to exalt whatever ends they see fit. An arcana of exaltation, imbuement, transversal, and fleshbending- feeding upon the mortal urge for power, domination, and conquest. Though, the arts of genus and their mind-warping features seep over into many arcanas which the wielder may bear- from the druidic arts, to the maleus-laden feats of the infernal. Within all, there is one aspect of the world which bears uncanny potential, when paired with it- the Way of the Oscillit.   The Resonance Anomaly is the natural flow of mana and energies as they ripple through substance- yet with the potent to draw upon the genus of one’s blood, practitioners of both Kani and Blood Magic simultaneously can take advantage of this mana-rich substance, using it not only as a medium, yet a volatile conduit to unstably enhance and extend Resonance’s temporary enhancement of the Soul Blueprint further outwards- an irrational and unconventional style of combat. Over aeons, a novel path of Kani has formed to take advantage of this, divergent from the conventional paths of the Sun and Moon- the Path of Tears. Lágrima.

 

Nᴏᴛᴇꜱ Fᴏʀ LT [ᴘʟᴇᴀꜱᴇ ʀᴇᴀᴅ]   At the advice of past [LT] alongside [ST Management], this OOC preview of each ability, feature, or the mechanics of this lore was written in order to convey the reasoning and thought process that went into the writing of the marriage piece in order to give players, primarily the [LT], a better understanding of the lore through contextualization with hope that this will be taken into account during reviewal; this was written for this piece similarly to my Zar’akal rewrite attempt, in order to keep things with utmost clarity in this piece.   Spoiler   THE PATH OF TEARS ♢ Core Concept At its core, Blood Magic and Kani are almost as if made to go hand-in-hand. I’ll give a small quote that Zarsies said when giving us advice in writing this, which I think phrases this well; “Resonance is a reaction to the movement of energy. By a person breathing they are adjusting the lifeforce in their body while simultaneously generating genus. So as a person breathes in air they synthesize genus. That in-out is a basic movement of energy (mana) which facilitates resonance moving. A la breathing is magic.” Given this, the point of Lágrima is furthering this to the highest state- genus is the perfect medium for one’s own Resonance, given that very genus is a portion of themselves and tethered to their soul and is a fluid, it acts as something which lets us push Resonance and Kani to a level which otherwise wouldn’t be possible within base lore.   ♢ Progression Progression is made to mimic that of Kani’s own paths- that of the Sun and Moon. In essence, this has four spells that are tied to Aggressive Resonance and the path, and one further one which is as if a Passive Resonance one, unique to this magic- given that it fits well of what Blood Magic and Kani should be able to do, and not major whatsoever, being vastly aesthetic. It is important to understand that with Kani, no blood mage can have more than 3-4 genus.   PATH ABILITIES ♢ Bloodletting Both Kani and Blood Magic are capable of manipulating blood - the latter more so than the former - and this ability provides a mostly harmless, aesthetic tool for an Oscillit to manipulate with Condensing and Hardening where they may otherwise have used sand, rain or an existing implement.   ♢ Fervorous Ripple Genus being tied to oneself makes this feasible, as does the utility of Orbit- the effects of Genus permit it to be tied to your soul, resonance, and even when outside one’s body- and as such, this makes the expulsion and combustion of such via resonance not only thematic and interesting, but also very feasible within a logical sense.   ♢ Stifling Strike This spell expands upon the existing mechanics of Bloodbending, imparting a martial twist onto the ability to manipulate the blood of others in an offensive manner. Given a direct hit, this effectively is the “core strike” of this Path, where this is an instillation of control upon their blood and genus, given Resonance’s capacity.   ♢ Sanguine Flow At its core, this is a pseudo-reskinned crossbow, with the alteration of the projectile and the physical force it carries to instead be replaced with a minor searing burn effect to the flesh impacted. This is possible due to the capacity of Resonance paired with genus, wherein this sort of amplification and projection is possible- especially given it only theoretically needs this minor assistance from Resonance given that prior Blood Magic writes have been capable of similar feats.   ♢ Crimson Zephyr (Cheaper Town Hall) Iron fist ult. In all, this is something which we wrote to push the limits of Kani and Blood Magic’s combination- that is, using genus to amplify oneself paired with Kani’s own nature of amplfiication of soul via Resonance. The reddened mists which trail after strikes are similar effects to what genus has been made capable of in prior and current Blood Magic writes, whilst making sense of their presence by Resonance.

 

Oꜰ Bʟᴏᴏᴅ ᴀɴᴅ Bʀᴇᴀᴛʜ Tʜᴇ Pᴀᴛʜ ᴏꜰ Tᴇᴀʀꜱ   The paths of Sun and Moon serve as the two primary styles of Kani- though, neither style of breathing and natural rhythm could permit a wielder of both Kani and Blood Magic to bring out the fullest of the application of genus. The result of a forlorn sect of Oscillits working in tandem with the hemomantic arts, practitioners of Lágrima grew to create this novel style given the emotional nature of the soul- the advanced abilities of the Oscillit depend upon the personal mentality and rhythm of the Oscillit. The initiation of Aggressive Resonance to practitioners of Lágrima causes the eyes to bleed genusless tears of vibrant crimson- the titular cause for why many consider this the Path of Tears; these bloodied tears never stop during Aggressive Resonance, until resonance is lost. One may only start upon the Path of Tears at [Tɪᴇʀ III] of Kani, given they need to bear the capacity to learn one of the paths in order to practice it.   In order to set themselves upon this path, a prospective practitioner of Lágrima must undergo an unconventional ritual, free-form in nature but relating to the themes of blood and mortality as they embark upon this seldom-trod path- they must carve the runes of Mortality, Flesh, Power and Air onto themselves - as they attune their breath and mind to this path. A Kani practitioner who subscribes to the Path of Tears is thus incapable of utilizing abilities from both Paths of the Sun and the Moon, due to the fixation of this style. Practitioners of the Path of Tears may switch back to the Paths of Sun and Moon once per [1] OOC month similarly to switching between those paths, but switching off or on to the Path of Tears will inhibit them from reaching Aggressive Resonance for [3] OOC days.

 

Tɪᴇʀ Pʀᴏɢʀᴇꜱꜱɪᴏɴ Bʟᴏᴏᴅɪᴇᴅ Rᴇꜱᴏɴᴀɴᴄᴇ   Lágrima is the art of using genus as a medium to extend the soul-augmentation an Oscillit gains through resonance; it is a self-taught marriage piece between Blood Magic and Kani- it is not a new magic but rather a combination of the two, and hence consumes no slots. Its progression is dependent upon the progression of Kani, as its abilities all function as a third Path parallel to the Sun and Moon Paths; abilities of Lágrima may be only practiced by an individual of the Path of Tears.

⬢ Lágrima is a marriage piece between Blood Magic and Kani- it is not a new magic, but rather a combination of the two. One requires both an accepted Kani [MA] and an accepted Blood Magic [MA] to utilize any of it.

⬢ Being a subset of Kani, Lágrima is incapable of being dual-cast. There must be at least a [1] emote period of grace between using an ability of Lágrima/Kani and that of another magic. However, practicioners of Lágrima do not need this grace emote between utilizing an ability of Blood Magic and that of Lágrima/Kani.

⬢ The maintaining of Passive and Aggressive Resonance are unchanged to that of Kani’s lore, and should always be referenced to deem what is static and not.

⬢ All abilities of Lágrima are self-taught and locked within the Path of Tears- a third Path of Kani that is parallel to the paths of the Sun and Moon. This path can be switched to similarly to switching between the Sun and Moon, with a switch to/from it permitted once per [1] OOC month- with the exception that switching to or off it inhibits the wielder from reaching Aggressive Resonance for [3] OOC days.

⬢ Paired with the Oscillit’s normal freeform tell of their choice when holding Resonance, a practitioner of the Path of Tears bears the additional tell of bloody tears spilling from their eyes- which may be altered and tweaked in a freeform sense to better fit with the Oscillit’s normal tell- which is furthermore altered by reddened mists, mottled crimson hues, or whatever other ilk which hints at blood magic’s altering nature.

⬢ Lágrima does not require another magic/feat application, though the Path of Tears must be stated upon the MA of the Oscillit in order to utilize it.

Pᴀᴛʜ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ Tᴇᴀʀꜱ Tᴏ Wᴇᴇᴘ Bʟᴏᴏᴅ   Funneling sanguine energy from their veins and manipulating it with their Resonance, the Oscillit will, as their skills progress, discover varied methods of exhibiting their newfound control over their blood- skills of expulsion and searing and of exerting control over another’s blood.   All abilities of Lágrima are centered around the utility that comes with the capacity of being able to properly understand and manipulate genus at a basal level paired with the limits of Resonance- within it, these combine to create the capacity to push all limits of both Blood Magic and Kani independantly, becoming more akin to a “wild card” in modern perspectives- performing feats that neither arcana could perform on their own.    To be able to spread Resonance through a medium that can further carry the soul’s bearing of it, and when enhanced to such a volatile level can permit the projection of the Resonance Anomaly outside one’s form- as well as instilling calamity unto others.

 

[Tɪᴇʀ III] Bloodletting [Passive]

An Oscillit may exert a self-imposed form of Hemorrhaging to cause themself to bleed genus-deprived blood to manipulate with Resonance. Opening up cuts on their palms through sheer force of will, they provide themselves with a gruesome, yet effective tool to utilise Resonance upon.

Mechanics:

After achieving a state of Passive Resonance, an Oscillit is capable of causing themself to bleed genusless blood from a cut on their palms- which opens as a result of consecrating Resonance and genus alike to tear flesh- and may use said blood for Condensing and Hardening as usual. This process takes [1] emote to perform, and rippling waves of reddish energy will spread along the user’s form while it is active.

 

The expelled blood is genusless and does not actively incite any of the effects of bloodloss- it is a purely aesthetic and freeform means of creating substance which can feasibly be utilized to use Hardening and Condensing upon.

 

REDLINES:

⬢ Bloodletting  may be cast in freeform fashion and without cost, both combatively and noncombatively over [1] emote.

⬢ Bloodletting requires only Passive Resonance to invoke, wherein it can be utilized in a freeform fashion to create genusless blood which may be freely affected by Orbit, Condensing, Hardening, and Friction.

⬢ Bloodletting automatically opens a temporary cut on the palm, as does it also not cause the effects of bloodloss or anemia within the Oscillit, though for all purposes act as “particulates” for all purposes of Kani lore.

⬢ During the emote of Bloodletting, the Oscillit may perform Condensing or Hardening upon it at the same time, given their natural affinity to their own genus.

 

[Tɪᴇʀ III] Fervorous Ripple [Aggressive]

An Oscillit may incite Resonance within their genus to accumulate and imbue ichor from a cut exposed on a limb, and subsequently expel it within a concise projectile that reels forwards before combusting in a burst- battering those within its radius with a volatile blow.

Mechanics:

After achieving a state of Aggressive Resonance, an Oscillit may be capable of flooding a portion of blood exuded from a cut into a small projectile within their palm or foot over [1] emote, and burst it forwards in a mid-ranged surge [1] emote later. Upon moving up to [6] meters, the rippling projectile combusts, releasing a battering burst of blood a radius of [2] meters from its core in all directions equivalent to a blow from a wooden cudgel.

 

When an Oscillit’s blood is imbued with Fervorous Ripple, launching the projectile takes [1] combative action after creation, and cannot be done in tandem with any kind of combatively offensive or defensive motion that actively contacts an individual. Fervorous Ripple may only be held for [1] emote before the charge is wasted, wherein in that emote, [1] combative action must be expended to propel it forwards.

 

Fervorous Ripple’s projectile moves at the speed of an averagely tossed baseball- it is by no means quick. The strength of Fervorous Ripple scales directly to the race of the Oscillit; this is to say an Orc who uses Fervorous Ripple  will deliver a blow comparable to an orc-swung cudgel. Fervorous Ripple may only be cast [2] times per combative encounter, with every further cast costing [1] count of genus.

 

REDLINES:

⬢ At its essence, Fervorous Ripple is a [1] emote charge and [1] emote propulsion ability. Fervorous Ripple may only be cast [2] times per combative encounter without cost; all further costs consume [1] count of the Oscillit’s genus.

⬢ Fervorous Ripple’s projectile can only propel itself in a straight line up to [6] meters, moving in the direction of the blow that the Oscillit sends it in. 

⬢ Upon reaching the end of its propulsion or contacting something, Fervorous Ripple explodes into a sphere of rigid blood, bashing everything within [2] meters of it with the force of a wooden cudgel.

⬢ Fervorous Ripple will only remain imbued upon an Oscillit’s chosen limb for [2] emote, dissipating into harmless red mist after the time elapses without it being used.

⬢ The projectile of Fervorous Ripple itself does no physical damage, and only moves at the speed of a casually tossed baseball- solely its combustion actually inflicts damage.

 

[Tɪᴇʀ IV] Stifling Strike [Aggressive]

An Oscillit may incite Resonance within their genus to interact with another’s- forcibly coagulating and stiffening bloodflow to a struck limb, rendering it numb and clumsy to the point of uselessness for a time, potentially opening them up to further attacks- or forcing them back at the point of a metaphysical fist as their blood is shoved backwards along with the rest of them.

Mechanics:

After achieving a state of Aggressive Resonance, an Oscillit may draw upon their mastery of genus, focusing on an opponent’s limb as their preferred striking limb - be it arm or leg - attains a ruddy glow for [1] emote. Following this, they may aesthetically choose to opt for the alternate visual of delivering an augmented flurry of strikes- which, due to their swiftness and magical nature- are equivalent to no more than a singular strike with the given limb. 

 

Should a target’s limb be struck, they’ll find it stiffening and growing numb as their bloodflow is forcibly slowed, ichor coagulating and rendering the limb useless, barely capable of retaining grip on a weapon yet stiffened, hindered, and clumsy enough that attacks cannot be performed with it. Stifling Strike’s limb-disabling effect only lasts for [2] emotes.

 

Alternatively, were the target struck at the chest or head, they would experience an inexorable tugging as the blood and genus within the struck area is forced backwards, pulling them away from the Oscillit by [2] blocks, yet not causing them to stumble. Stifling Strike may only be cast [2] times per combative encounter, with every further cast costing [1] count of genus.

 

REDLINES:

⬢ Stifling Strike may only be cast [2] times per combative encounter without cost; all further costs consume [1] count of the Oscillit’s genus.

⬢ Stifling Strike will only remain imbued upon an Oscillit’s chosen limb for [1] emote, dissipating into harmless red mist after the time elapses without it being used; it may not be imbued upon any other portion of the body. (head, torso, etc.)

⬢ Stifling Strike will not affect limbs that are covered by Heavy Armor, only capable of striking through Medium/Light Armor. The chest/head are affected regardless of armor, knocking them back still.

⬢ Affected limbs are effectively rendered useless- too clumsy to perform either defensive or offensive combative actions, though may retain their grip upon held items.

⬢ The ‘pushing’ effect caused by striking the chest or head will not continue after the initial impact - that is to say that the target will not be shoved back any further after being struck.

 

[Tɪᴇʀ IV] Sanguine Flow [Aggressive]

An Oscillit may incite Resonance within their genus to compress and vibrate a pool of blood within both palms, before jettisoning it forth in a piercing and coiling beam that bursts through the air- a streamlined projectile which mimics the flesh-rupturing potential of a crossbow.

Mechanics:

After achieving a state of Aggressive Resonance, an Oscillit may pool blood from exposed cuts of their body, sharpening and refining it within a pool clasped between both palms. Over [2] emotes, the Resonance can be applied to the fragments of genus cupped between their hands, as it is compressed and rapidly spun to a boiling and spiralling ichor- which can then be unleashed in [1] further emote to launch forwards as a static beam. 

 

The projectile-like beam of Sanguine Flow moves at the same speed and and piercing impact to one shot out of a Hand Crossbow, though is at a searing heat- if it pierces into flesh, it scorches the area around it with [1st Degree] burns; since Sanguine Flow is not a physical projectile, its beam lasts for only the [1] emote of propulsion, and does not remain in victims. Critically, no matter what it does not bear the same force of a bolt upon contact- it merely bears piercing and burning effects.

 

Furthermore, [1] extra emote can be spent for charging, which can amplify the piercing strength of the projectile to be equivalent to a Crank Crossbow. Sanguine Flow may only be cast [2] times per combative encounter, with every further cast costing [1] count of genus.

 

REDLINES:

⬢ At its essence, Sanguine Flow is a [2-3] emote charge and [1] emote propulsion ability. Sanguine Flow may only be cast [2] times per combative encounter without cost; all further costs consume [1] count of the Oscillit’s genus.

⬢ Sanguine Flow interacts with armor in the same way that equivalent projectiles will- either as a hand crossbow or crank crossbow- and bear piercing effects equivalent to so. Critically, it does not bear the same concussive force as those projectiles, and rather solely the piercing effect.

⬢ Sanguine Flow is not a projectile in the sense that it will not remain embedded in a wound caused by it, given that it is a pressurized beam of boiling and twisting blood.

⬢ Wounds caused by Sanguine Flow are the same as those inflicted by hand crossbow (or crank crossbow) bolts, save for the fact that no bolt will remain in the wound- furthermore, a radius of about [3] inches around the wound is marred by [1st Degree] burns.

⬢ If Sanguine Flow’s stream does not pierce flesh, it does not inflict any sort of burn, nor does it heat armor.

 

[Tɪᴇʀ V] Crimson Zephyr [Aggressive]

An Oscillit may incite Resonance within their genus whilst it is still within their body- forcefully pumping it about their body and expending it at a steady rate to heighten their physical form- causing reddened mists to swathe around their form as they are augmented- both in physical stature and in resonance.

Mechanics:

After achieving a state of Aggressive Resonance, an Oscillit may enter a brief meditative trance over [2] emotes, before unleashing from the trance at the start of the next emote- entering a frenzied state of heightened vigor. During the span when the Oscillit is harnessing and expending this genus within themselves, they garner a sudden rush of bodily capacity. Over the [2] emotes of meditation, an Oscillit is incapable of observing nor hearing anything occurring about them and cannot move, remaining in place- if struck or interrupted, Crimson Zephyr does not activate.

When under the effects of Crimson Zephyr, all melee blows given by the Oscillit have a second, phantasmal-like strike of bloodied mist trail after- in other words, every punch or kick functions as if it hits [2] times. Furthermore, their movement speed when both walking and sprinting is increased by [2] meters per action. All exposed wounds steam pale-red gas as their mind becomes rushed, incapable of thinking properly of the long term, and more frantic and focused in-the-moment. 

 

Whilst Crimson Zephyr is active, every [2] emotes of activity it consumes and expends [1] count of genus from the Oscillit; if the Oscillit hits [1] count of genus or otherwise leaves Crimson Zephyr, the effects instantly end as the Oscillit is left exhausted and out of breath, disconnecting both Passive and Aggressive Resonance, and requiring it to be re-obtained. Crimson Zephyr may only be cast [1] time per combative encounter.

 

REDLINES:

⬢ Crimson Zephyr requires [2] emotes of meditative focus to incite, where the Oscillit may not perform combative actions nor move. If struck within this state, their focus ceases, as the invocation fails. During this trance, the individual cannot hear, see, nor otherwise percieve the world around them- this state ends at the start of the first emote post-activation, as does the steady consumption of genus.

⬢ After activating Crimson Zephyr, the Oscillit enters a heightened state- which lasts so long as they bear sufficient genus to maintain it, consuming [1] count of genus every [2] emotes.

⬢ When under the effects of Crimson Zephyr, the Oscillit’s movement is heightened- capable of moving an extra [2] meters per action. This cannot increase the speed of mounts, nor can it be used to increase speed of swimming or similar motions.

⬢ Furthermore, when under the effects of Crimson Zephyr, a trail of genus-infused gaseous mist follows the motions of the Oscillit, striking after every melee blow they take; in other words, every punch or kick functions as if it hits [2] times. This does not function on any non-melee strikes, such as any Path of Tears ability.

⬢ The deterioration of genus lasts until the Oscillit would be reduced down to [1] count of genus, causing it to instantly end- whilst the effects of genus loss (detailed in Blood Magic lore) begin to function, leaving them unable to combatively proceed. Furthermore, leaving the effects of Crimson Zephyr either by will or by genus deterioration causes both Passive and Aggressive resonance to be broken. If the Oscillit gains counts of genus at anytime during Crimson Zephyr, they can be also expended to continue the ability.

⬢ The mental effects of this state are not debilitating, but are meant to be guidelines to follow- they do not impede focus or Resonance whatsoever.

Pᴜʀᴘᴏꜱᴇ & Cʀᴇᴅɪᴛꜱ

Within all, the lore’s purpose is to bridge the gaps between Blood Magic and other magics- primarily, one which we deemed to be one of the best-fitting combinations that was possible. Whilst we aren’t traditionally direct holders of either magics, we’ve both participated closely in communities with many of those who do, and discussed the concepts extensively with numerous individuals who bear one or both, or have deep knowledge in the concepts or lore behind the pieces. This does not offer a direct combative advantage over the other two Kani paths, given that objectively- the Sun path and Moon path both still bear immense potential and power that this path can’t bear, from defensive benefits, anti-magic, piercing strikes and stronger blows- though this makes up for that in uniqueness for doing what could only be done from a combination of both Blood Magic and Kani.   In a sense, we think this could be viewed as the spiritual successor to Hemalurgy- except not nearly as shitty or rushed, and actually well thought-out, and in the end the two of us are very happy with how this came out.
