I definitely see and hear the desire of the LGTQIA+ community to use homophobia/transphobia as nuance in their stories, and it makes a great storyline when done respectfully!

 

The problem is, this is a Minecraft server with a ton of children on it. "Respectful" isn't in this server's vocabulary.

 

Simple fact of the matter is, the server can't be trusted with it. If Admins had to handle each individual case, they wouldn't have time to even play there would be so much work. So it's the easiest and safest thing to put a complete ban on it.

I'm a devout Christian, and while I don't agree with the practice of homosexuality, it's not my life. All I can do is pray for their sake and move on.

No need for me to bring it online when none of you matter to my happiness and salvation.

You have been on this server for less than two months compared to the countless people who have been on the server for years expressing those and other opinions. Frankly, I don't think you have any ground to discount the experiences of their roleplay and narratives, and then give your own unexperienced view of what this server is and has been about or what people can be trusted to do. The only thing I agree with you on is that there are underage players here which is why we need to be incredibly vigilant about allowing people to utilise characters on LotC that are used off-platform in a sexual manner.

Okay. I wasn't gonna say anything because genuinely it isn't worth it, but I do have to put in my 2 cents. I used to be Christian, and I mean devout. It was my childhood, and the religion itself was drilled into me. But to say that your religion, Christianity, Catholicism, etc, is inherently homophobic and therefor makes homophobia valid, is wrong. 

 

To say that your discrimination is allowed or encouraged by your religion is also to say that you believe women are worth as much as property, and should be treated as property. Or to say that certain fabrics cannot be worn together. The bible does indeed tell us how to properly buy a slave, does that mean we should support slavery? Does the writing in the bible make any of those things okay? Of course not. 

 

Even if all those things ARE true, the one rule that resides above all of that is "to love your neighbor as yourself". Religion does not excuse hatred. You cannot say that homophobia, racism, etcetera is supported by your religion, then ignore the rest of the Bible, or whatever holy text you refer to. Especially since these texts are SO OLD, there have been HUNDREDS of translations. Who knows what the original meaning of any of those words are? Certainly not us.

Someone has to say the quiet part out loud. People care more about how something sounds rather than the truth. People are able to roleplay responsibly on the server. People aren't seeing racist or homophobic-themed roleplay on a roleplay server and then go on to do hate crime sprees in real life. People who are legitimately discriminatory on LotC get banned when they're discovered. Not to discredit him for being Catholic but that's what he's being known as in the Church discord to avoid confusion but Catholic Gavin got banned years ago for a period due to posting a transphobic meme and got reported. People need to learn to separate OOC and RP because there is oftentimes a distinction, and when there isn't there is usually evidence of that you can report them and get them banned for. The problem isn't the roleplay, it's the people. Get rid of those people and you get rid of the problem.

for some people this rule means they can no longer pursue a certain avenue of RP on a minecraft medium and for others it means they're no longer exposed to painful and demeaning forms of bigotry. if the former is more important to you than the latter to such a degree that it somehow personally hinders your RP you probably use this server as a power fantasy and not a medium of creativity

things are bleak right now for many people irl. there's nuance between the person using this server as a coping mechanism to such a degree that they're OOCly problematic when faced with adversities, vs the isolated person who lives in a rural red state wanting to use LOTC as an outlet to play a queer character in a way that brings them comfort in an environment where they as a person are highly politicized and debated. some of u are actual demons

So how does this work with cultures and nations that rely on blood for nobility and leadership? Does that automatically call for a ban if they won't allow a gay heir to inherit, since they can't have children with their partner?

@CrevelI have been on this server for two months and this is already one of the most problematic games I have witnessed in my over three decades of a lifetime. Just because I haven't been on this server for long doesn't mean that I'm incapable of reading the room. I've seen more casual racial, homophobic, and transphobic slurs OOC and IC in these two months than I have since I was in middle school on 4chan. The amount of people I've met that I would trust to be nuanced with homophobia, I can count on one hand.

 

Before the inevitable "quit if you don't like it!"- I'm having fun, it was just a massive culture shock, and I'm glad to see it taking steps in the right direction.
