[MAGIC] - What's YOUR take, and what are YOUR ideas?

This might not be popular input with everyone (and I'm a new guy) but my 2 cents are... please don't overdo it with magic! It should be special, and by that I mean not just very hard to discover and learn, but also come with plenty of downsides so not everyone would even want to be a mage.

One thing I find that detracts from "believability" is if every John Bob has lightning bolts shooting out of their arse, and fireballs out of their nose... ;)

I'd like it if it focused more on subtle effects and utility effects more than damage in general. Teleportation, stopping hunger, plant growth, skill boost auras, transforming terrain over time, infectious magical plagues, curses that drop skills, control over the weather, the ability to send telepathic messages ICly, a spell to make a telepathic announcement to everyone online, and so forth.

My opinion, of course. :)

since u want opinions, i really like this magic powers with races thing, but, i think orcs should get more, fiery powers, and elves don't appear to have any offensive moves, other than that, it is the best idea i heard all week!

Just so you guys know magic is going to be closely moderated, not everyone will be able to use it. Only the people I accept through an application process will be able to (this is what I think is happening at present anyway). This will make for better RP and only people who can actually RP will have magic.

EDIT: Then I may do some trialing or quest based thing to 'unlock' your magic powers or something... I am open to suggestions.

Obviously everyone will want to try magic, restricting it to gm approval will create an enormous amount of unnecessary work, and player dissatisfaction.

Better to have gameplay limitations, if you are seeking balance. Powerful magic should be difficult to attain/train/use and coupled with sacrifice - like stats changes, and armor and weapon wielding.

That being said attaining magic should be something fun and rp, unlike the current 'villain system' which is more an attempt to modify and police player behaviors.

We're not modifying peoples behaviour, but yes we are policing it. Since players do not get killed permanently, and their real lives are not at stake, they will often be more reckless and evil than usual. Therefore we must police villians or else the server experience will become less fun.

i have noticed a really strange problem with the magic.

the orcs get.....well.....pretty bad spells. and not only that, they also need ingredients AND mana, while the other races only need mana, anyone seeing a problem here? also, some ingrediants are Lapiz lazulli. like COME ON! how easy is it to get lapiz lazuli? and the spells arn't worth the wast of lapiz. i personnaly disire a change, why are the orcs getting all the bad spells?( 1.5 extra damage on enemies for 15 seconds max, u can light ppl on fire for 3 seconds in a 3 block range etc......) someone please improve on this!

1.5 dmg for 15 seconds is an incredible buff, that is almost... 30 hearts of extra damage.

3 Damage spell is the highest damage spell in the game.

They're not weak.

Actually The items are quite easy to get. Lapiz Lazuli comes at about 10 Mina per stone! Gunpower may be hard to get, but It doesn't take much Mana and it buffs your/anyone's character, hell! You get a super warrior! I would do ANYTHING to have an orc shaman in my armour.

Are you reading the applications yourself, or is another GM helping you? If by yourself, good luck, everyone's going to apply... And with your tight schedule and all...

Since when were orcs fiery? I would love to have an elf in my army! Who wouldn't like instant healing?

Words to live by, friend. But /tell is already RP'd. I usually say "A carrier pigeon has sent a message" Undead already have transforming terrain, but good idea on curses. Orcs kinda have curses with the poison but hey!

having the spell bound to a staff and you can have x amount of spells on each staff and the spells bound to it is in the right corner of your screen, and you bind spell number 1-5 or something to your keys... like healing, fireball and curses. and cooldowns for spells, dispels for curses and some spells needs reagents like feathers like: slowfall reduces your fall speed and negates fall damage. etc... etc...

I support the RP applications to use magic. Otherwise aegis will just become a zone of lightning strikes everywhere.

Ye, by modifying i meant a mod, with a hammer 'modify' :-)

I'm not saying having villain applications is a bad idea, just that the process could/should be different/more interesting when it comes to magic. Stating the obvious I know ^^.

I think a good idea would be for people to eventually unlock atributes and abilitays as if they were wached over by the Gods!

stuff like there hp some tymes reachaarges and they can unlock other spells like ones called doomed and sentance.

Another idea is that u could maby make it so we can enchant armors.not so the add more defence or enny thing but so it adds abilatys like extra speed or higher jump and things like that!

I hope these suggestions are helpfull!!!
