[Resolved] Mechanical Eyes - Mostly A Lore Question, Really.

My character was blind, and on the hunt for a healer who might be able to fix this. She ran into some dwarves. One was called "Dormin" (though he was nicknamed "Dirhim") and the other, "Hodir Doomforge".

They took me back to Saviticus's house (which I was unaware of ICly... sorry Savvy! cx), where Dirhim kicked my character in the face until she passed out and then performed the surgery to give her mechanical eyes. They'd said something about it being an experiment some other dwarf was doing before he was eaten by a Wyrm, etc. Dirhim claimed to be the best forge on the server, and his rp was pretty good by my standards, so I thought nothing of it.

Upon returning to the druid's grove, I was met with skepticism. So, just to make sure nobody's out of line here, I'm requesting a lore confirmation on mechanical eyes. Screens below. Not everything was screenshotted, but a good chunk was. \/

Well, I'm not sure about mechanical eyes...There's not really any machines as we think of them in LotC right now. Magic eyes, sure. But not machines.

I had the same converstaion with someone who had a mechanical arm. These are things that really need ot be roleplayed, Mechanical or robotic eyes are really scifi and not really the fantasy setting I believe the aims for. BUT, mechanical-like limbs I believe are fine, when they are legitimately invented.

I've asked darkjames to comment, but his forum profile says he offline so I dunno how long that will be.

From what it sounded like, though, it was invented by this guy whose name I can't remember. It started with a Y. Yussir or something like that.

He apparently invented them because he was going blind, but he died before using them on himself.

On an unrelated note, Hi En. *wiggles fingers* c:

Edit: I just had a moment. Did you know that Cecelia's last name would have been Hawksong? o_o

I read "artificial nerves" and this makes me a little confused. How do you create artificial nerves? How do you connect them to real nerves? How are they powered? How did Dirhim obtain an extremely advanced knowledge of the nervous system?

I know this is a fantasy server, but this kinda feels like it's being pulled out of no-where. Dirhim should probably check with a loremaster.

Making artificial limbs or eyes seem a bit pushy.

Remaining impartial, but playing the devil's advocate:

If it could be done with magic, why not machine?

CAUSE MAGIC WORKS.

And we arnt advaced in science yet. If they did it with runes....eh still pushing it cause you would still have to connect all connectors for the eyes to move or see...or magic

Because we have magic, but no machines. None that I have ever heard of, anyway. Something so intricately complicated would have been in development for decades, if not centuries--just to get the mildest understanding of how a nerve works. Magic, on the other hand, is already heavily developed, and magical types have been working on improving that stuff for yonks.

All I really want is Dirhim to explain how it works, how he developed it, and for what reasons.

I got a "robot eye" as a dwarf a looong time ago; it's still magic, just a rune enchanted upon a casing of metal (in my case, diamond). The rune that they used for my operation was a rune of sight which augments the metal and connects to the person to allow sight.

I personally like the notion a lot, a bit of archaic metal based tech which results in cool augmentations.

Do the dwarves that do the runes actually know how they work?

Runes don't have any power, they just redirect magic essence to do something. This was said to me by Blaw when I asked about it, so I think you guys might have the wrong idea on what runes actually do and how they work. They can still make many things, but runes in body I don't think would work.

A rune in someone's body would keep using the magic essence they had until they passed out and died. At least I would think they would die, since the rune would keep using the essense even after they would pass out.

Also... I would just think Isabella would at least die of infection, heavy metal poisoning, her body rejecting the new piece of organ, and a few more things. This from guessing they were blacksmiths and engineers instead of healers of course.

Things that seem too robotic in healing I don't really like. Healing with machine like things that even give better capabilities than normal, I think it's powergaming.

That's my view on this

I think since Tyrion wrote the rune lore they are using and it was accepted by Gaius, they know what they are doing. Dormin (Dirhim) is very likely Auslon's best living smith and the only current runesmith. Don't question it.

Mechanical eye is a misinformation. It is a magical eye utilizing Kathiik runes.

The eye is of cheap materials, but Dormin has crafted small runes on the glass it being actually a thin blanket of copper, which then thickens and becomes connected with the nerves. That's how it works.

Made for a Smith originally, each glass augments like a telescope, all the glasses connected by the thin lines of copper running inside the mechanism.

the rune will die out very slowly, possibly until the last of Bella's days.

Jist, the metal replaces the organ seamlessly, and it does not stab into the flesh. However, she could get infected after I stomped on her face so much. :3

Mith, tell me, if this is SO complicated, how do we make Golems?

"Mith, tell me, if this is SO complicated, how do we make Golems?"

Hey hey hey. I thought these eyes were purely "mechanical," Not rune-powered. When magic comes into its construction then my argument doesn't matter. I have no qualms with runes, that eye, or golems for that matter. ;)

Maybe this is all my bad, then, for getting the word "mechanical" in the mix.

I'll take responsibility for that.

Can we confirm that, since it's rune-based, it's valid?
