Also the actual populations in Skyrim aren't that Large. So the designs should work well enough for our Dwarf population.

So it looks we are a bit split.  Perhaps we can start a list of pros and cons between a mountain city and the traditional underground city.

I'll start it:

Mountain City:

Pros -

Can layer and make the city smaller

Perhaps easier to construct in survival

Can expand Easier

Potential positive change from our normal city

Cons -

Weaker defenses

Discrepancy amongst cave dwarves

Absence of our grand halls

Obviously the weaker defences are a bit unavoidable with the exact design of Markath. However, if you take Kal'Anart for example, that was known as being one of the most defensive holds we had because of its tiered system. There's no reason we couldn't tweak Markarth's design a little or even make it so that you can't pass over the mountains to get into the city.

An overhead picture of Kal'Anart here:

Also to be honest, I wouldn't say the design is really like a traditional mountain dwarf city at all, as a large portion of the buildings are still built underground and into the side of the mountain. You could even have a hall that's used a palace if you wanted to continue that aspect of past cities into 4.0.

As for pre-builds, I personally believe the main part of the city should be pre-built to an extent while any expansions or areas around it should be made in game. If the building process is disorganised and people aren't role playing, I think that would likely alienate those players who aren't particularly great builders and maybe even deter them away.

Edit: Also Native, the design for the area looks great from that view, it'll be good to see it in game eventually. I actually think the ravines would make the Markarth design work even better, particularly when we're thinking in terms of defences and such.

Damn, I love the idea of a dwarven markarth so friggin' much, just thinking about it makes me want to still roleplay as a dwarf as a city like Markarth would honestly bring us some unique RP.

Perhaps we shouldn't use the exact design, so we arent like the humans that copy everything from game of thrones and skyrim

Also if we need food we can construct a large mushroom cavern underneath and make that a nice zone for exploration. We can also see if we can start herding mooshrooms again.

I wouldn't say the exact design, mainly just the architectural style and walkway type system. Basically just:

  • A wall at the front.
  • Waterfalls, along with a more natural feel to the city.
  • A market place near the front of the city, not too far from the entrance to the mine.
  • Houses at the back, built into the mountain on different tiers.
  • Random walkways leading to different levels of the city.
  • A palace most likely built into the back of the mountain.
  • Like Markarth, an elevated area in the centre of the city, with some sort of important building on top of it. Again, think along the lines of the tier system we use in a lot of dwarven cities.

Here is a design.  To make you understand, grey is the mountain/cliff side.  The black lines are the second tier balconies that over look the center of the city.  Green is the third tier balconies.  The city concept is in a bowl, and made to look natural.  The bottom floor and the stream at the bottle will be relatively the same height.  What do you think?

Added some rock and snow, let me know what ya thinks dwarves!

I photoshoped the area map. This is generally what we were thinking for terrain:

I'm actually really digging the Markath idea, but can we please steer away from the very rigid tiering that spuller suggested. One of the issues I always had with dwarven settlements in LotC (2.0 Alras being the exception) was that they were always stupidly flat. Rather, build so that tier 2 is ONTOP of tier 1, rather then outside it.

@Native; Something I'd like to know is how mines are being handled on 4.0, same as now: vanilla in multiverse mines or are we doing vanilla in the main world or something else entirely?

The only problem I see with this design is that everything is so restricted to particular parts of the city. The city should flow more naturally all around, not to mention the natural landscape. I think its a good idea to plan out the castle and military areas, but with everything else such as guilds, clergy, housing, etc. it should flow evenly through the city.

That way, we won't have this problem of having empty space where places are set aside for something or parts aren't filled. And then, roleplay can flow more evenly with all space being used.

I understand what you mean teebrown, however this is the general concept.  We cant plan that out exactly until we get the land we are offered.  I'd like to know weather the idea of every is centered around the "Tavern" or middle area.  But yeah I agree with you.

The main reason I like Markarth's current layout is that it is already perfect. We can easily place the temple where the Dibella temple is located and the tavern is underneath so the it makes it convenient for summoning persons to church. (We can also dedicate the tower to summoning the people).
