Mr. Corners does nothing but watch as Caedric is taken back to the municipal sanitarium by his elderly handler, where he may be plotting today the fourteenth or so disastrously failed Nordling invasion of their betters. Caedric‘s life would surely be immeasurably improved if he allowed himself to be helped, but a mix of deluded egocentrism and class frustration seems to keep their tribe shackled to a horrifically austere existence punctuated by violent coping fantasies. James contemplates the man's comment about self-sufficiency. The Nordling polity is still existentially reliant on its alliances with Haense and Urguan - would the new Haeseni monarch hold up his predecessor's promises relating to conversion and vassalization? Can a culture based only on seething last without conflict for much longer? "Vanity of vanities, indeed..." is the glum truth of life in a place such as Caedric's homeland, a reduced and purposeless place where the prideful of blood live as a minority, the prideful of honor live without victory, and the prideful of realm live without a king.

orenian man‘s burden

Orenian bureaucrat James Corners pays the idle Nordling a scheduled visit at a middling-tier restaurant in a government subsidized residential area of Providence. "Hello there, Caedric! Good day to you! I've communicated with the Interior ministry and found a list of jobs you can consider - should you be so inclined to find gainful employment. Of course, there is no pressure, for the Imperial government is well-equipped to indefinitely support those of marginal backgrounds such as yourself." Seating himself across from Caedric, Mr. Corners gives the man a polite grin and offers him a brochure listing details of the employment program. "One of my associates will be here shortly to provide you some logistical help for your choice, sir. Have you tried the coffee?" @Esterlen

General Alren DeNurem: The White Bull General Alren DeNurem, Knight Commander of the Order of the Lion, painted circa 1779. 17th of Harren’s Folly, 1781 Sir Alren DeNurem descends from the ancient kings of Hanseti and the masters of the Teutonic Order, one of the influential 14th and 15th century military organizations which spearheaded the gradual transition from traditional feudal levies towards professional state armies. True to his family’s legacy extending to the foundation of the Empire, he served as a soldier in the Imperial State Army during the Seventh Nordling War, swiftly rising through the ranks on account of his tremendous martial aptitude and tireless disposition as an officer. Appointed as General and Secretary of War of His Imperial Majesty’s forces, Sir Alren DeNurem secured victory against the massive coalition seeking to dismantle Oren. In tandem, he expanded the State Army’s ranks tremendously while asserting an unprecedented standard of discipline, professionalism, and education for all soldiers of the Crown. At the attempted incursion by Caedric and the Nordlings, DeNurem flawlessly carried out the Emperor’s orders to disarm every member of the warband. He continued to secure the country against Nordling and bandit raids in the wake of the war, as well as ensuring many successful defensive and offensive operations during the short-lived Merryweather War. He saw through the Emperor’s work in restoring the lost formula to blackpowder, returning and refining a weapon fundamental to Orenian supremacy. Currently, General Alren DeNurem demonstrates intrepid strategic command in the struggle against the Inferi demons through tactics on the field and intelligence in drawing rooms. He recently executed a flawless evacuation of the entire island of Korvassa, setting the stage for victory to come. For these reasons, among numerous more, His Imperial Majesty has seen fit to grant General Alren DeNurem the rank and honor of Four Star.

Sir Frederick Armas: A Titan of State 1687 - 1781 Sir Frederick Armas, the Viscount Rillsworth, painted circa 1762. 14th of Harren’s Folly, 1781 Sir Frederick Armas was born under no auspicious signs, nor was he groomed towards success through his natural station. Regardless, the venerable Harrenite was, until his very dying moment, radiant with a splendor shared by only those few Titans of Humanity: great monarchs, genius statesmen, and brilliant generals. Sir Armas was a self-made man in every regard, his triumphs and positions reached by his immense personal merit alone. Possessing an immaculate marriage of philosophical passion and rationality, he made unparalleled contributions to the advancement of Orenian culture, political thought, legal scholarship, and legislative mechanisms. He, along with GCM Terrence May, was responsible for the creation of the Imperial Senate, serving as the powerful institution’s first President. He popularized Saint Peter’s maxim, first spoken at the height of the 15th century: “One god, one country, one law, and one sovereign.” He was also a chief architect of the Kaedreni revival in the wake of the Nordling war, becoming known as the Sage of Kaedrin. Additionally, he was a key figure in the settlement and integration of the Empire’s Elven subjects. If the Imperial Monarch Peter III is the father of modern Oren, Frederick Armas is a celebrated uncle. For these reasons, among numerous more, His Imperial Majesty has seen fit to posthumously grant Sir Frederick Armas the honor of Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Petrine Order of Humanity and the Empire, placing him among the rare ranks of Sir Darius Sabari, Grand Cross of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Lion, the foundational general for the modern Orenian army, and Sir Terrence May, Grand Cross of the Imperial Order of Merit, the “Father of the Senate”.

The Imperial Monarch divines the way ahead. His only regret, unspoken, is that he is too old in these days to lead the efforts on the field.

2nd of Harren’s Folly, 1778 God with you, James, my only brother: you are to me as Clement. Never has one ignored the other’s counsel, and I shall not break now this sacred fraternity. Yet, you write such biting words when you know my ear is always yours. Never have I acted under any impairment, I assure you, so to that end I return my word with a calm heart. The wicked will find appropriate atonement, or they will find eternal punishment. This is merely by the rule of God, and is not a matter demanding our intervention. That I trust from you, and for that I trust to you. As to the war itself, James: by Providence, we have already threshed the wheat from the chaff. What is left but to turn in for the millstone? Understand though, brother, that even if we succeed in vanquishing the infernal from the lands of the ungrateful and mercurial, we will find ourselves in no better standing. But do not despair, for I have formed the Garden ahead in the horizon of my dreams. Never am I inattentive of the strings from Heaven. No son will be left behind, and neither will my brother be. - Peter

A Sergeant’s Smile 15th of Sigismund’s End, 1776 Sgt. Hinweiser of the 1st Brigade with Lieutenant Reine of the 4th. Advance, thrust, and chop; fall back under the cover of horse and shot. This is the tide of modern combat, a flow which Sergeant Hinweiser had been swept to and fro by for nearly three decades. As he stood proud before his section of eager halberdiers, the old trooper thought back on his beginning all those years ago. James Hinweiser was grown in the Emperor’s own country: the hinterlands of Helena which had been ravaged during the War of Two Emperors. With agriculture and industry yet to fully recover, and the threat of the Nordling coalition making investment from urban centers unlikely, Hinweiser was a boy without much future ahead of him. In those times after the fall of Renatus, the country was left without an army. The Lord Protector had established a professional army under General de Ruyter, the first of his era, but greatness would be long to come. The Imperial army at that time was equipped and trained for the warfare of centuries past, a matter which stung sorely when tested in the lighting-fast, infantry-centric battles of the present. Consecutive disastrous defeats bloodied the country, but for the red flag which had united and restored the ancient Empire, the nation’s pride would never be stained. The Emperor, working with his officers who would later become great leaders and statesmen, enacted modernizing reforms based on the Gunners’ model: a brigade of tireless, psychotically brave engineers which had done much from the interregnum until now. Captain Peter Baldwin d’Arkent of the 3rd Brigade commanding Imperial cavalry. When James Hinweiser was issued his red coat and lobster-tailed helm, Colonel Darius Sabari was hard at work with the figures who lead today, such as General Alren de Nurem and Lieutenant Colonel Peter d’Arkent. The Imperial State Army was gradually growing in size as its discipline increased, modern tactics and logistics proving resoundingly effective on the field. The victories at Reza had greatly augmented national morale, and Hinweiser served diligently with a proud fire in his heart. Whether it was digging, hauling, marching, or fighting - no matter how his blood or sweat flowed - Hinweiser’s pride for his country, like his red coat, would never show stains. The years went on, and James Hinweiser’s efforts eventually found him in charge of a division of the Emperor’s infantry. Though he was never cut out to be the sort of august figure who would rise to the great offices of war and state, Hinweiser found great purpose in his post as an Imperial sergeant. He was becoming too old and worn to push himself as hard as he did in his youth, but Sergeant Hinweiser maintained himself always as a stalwart example of the model Imperial infantryman. His service, that of halberd in hand against beast and brigand, was vital to the survival of the glorious modern state. Hinweiser felt that importance well in his every action, never faltering for a moment. It was the first winter of the current war, a retaliation prompted by some reject of the modern era’s assassinations of various Orenian nobles, and the old Sergeant performed his job as he ever did. Advance, thrust; chop. Fall back to let the enemy wither under fire. In this sweeping tide, Sergeant Hinweiser practically decapitated some renegade fleeing from his division with a wide slash of his halberd. Bending down to retrieve a curiously gleaming sword the enemy had dropped, Hinweiser felt a familiar ache in his back. Leaving the spoils to another, the sergeant stood up straight with a wistful gaze over the retreating enemy, past their territory, and into the blue sky. That pain in his back reminded James Hinweiser of his greying age, the country he had toiled to support, and his family well at home. In his head, the old man resolved to relax himself; to live safely and peacefully in respect of all these things. After seeing this war through, of course, Hinweiser thought with a smile.

Operation Enduring Freedom 4th of Tobias’ Bounty, 1775 TO THE CITY OF SUTICA, Following the legitimate Sutican government’s acceptance of our private and polite requests, Mister Corwin Alstreim has illegally sacked these justice-minded statesmen and replaced each with sycophants in an act of objective tyranny. We wish for all subjects of the Orenian Crown and residents of the City of Sutica to understand the trouble at hand, and to endeavor through dutiful action and educated discussion, reach this civil and peaceful solution. Even given his historied efforts to topple the Holy Orenian Empire as a soldier and commander, Mister Corwin Alstreim, by Our august graciousness, was given amnesty to find peace and repentance wherever his heart would lead him. The man’s heart, however, remains fixated on the destruction of the Orenian state and the violent death of the Imperial monarch’s relations. Not but a week after Mister Corwin Alstreim’s assumption of office in Sutica, a package arrived by post, addressed to the Lord Selm, John d’Arkent, from Mister Alstreim’s office. Contained was a collection of effigies meant to threaten violence against the Orenian people and land, demonstrating a continued commitment to his cause predicating on war against the Empire and murder of Our subjects. Mister Corwin Alstreim, once a commander of the now defunct A.I.S. coalition purposed to destroy the Holy Orenian Empire, his membership and intent revealed by Mister Alstreim’s former colleague Ri’Haskir, evidently maintains this lost cause by his words and actions. Profoundly more troubling is the disappearance and murder of both Lady Henrietta Alstion and Master Peter Amadeus, noble relations by blood to the Imperial monarch. This woman of prestige, wife of the Count Pompourelia and mother of young Peter Amadeus, went missing in the City of Sutica a number of years ago. According to a close friend of Peter, the young man set off on a personally important quest in Sutica just prior to his identical disappearance: to find answers for his dead mother. Following this second vanishment, the Crown’s foreign secretary visited Sutica to receive an explanation. The captain of the guard in Sutica spoke openly of the matter pertaining to Henrietta Alstion, claiming she was “mercy-killed” by Corwin and his personal soldiers. Given that the Lady Pompourelia’s physician’s records showed her to have no notable problems, We can determine, corroborated by Mister Corwin Alstreim’s past membership and current behavior, that this was a demonstration of the A.I.S. coalition’s evil justification of murder: that those born in or faithful to Oren must be killed. Soon after, a mentor to the disappeared Peter Amadeus ventured to Sutica to engage in her own inquiries. Happening upon Mister Corwin Alstreim in person, she was told with a laugh that the young nobleman may have died, but it did not matter to Mister Alstreim - and by the foreign secretary’s return, Mister Alstreim had admitted additionally to this murder. We can only hope that it matters to the people of the City of Sutica, however, for it is evident by his own boasting that Corwin Alstreim, with his demonstrated intent to murder and destroy Orenian people and land, is responsible for these deaths, and intends to abuse the haven of Sutica to perpetrate cold blooded violence in the future. To prevent his further murders of Orenian subjects, most explicitly the Imperial monarch’s blood relations, and to prevent his exploitation of Sutica’s people in violence against the world, We ask for the surrender of Mister Corwin Alstreim and his personal soldiers to Imperial authorities. For the sake of Sutica and Oren both, do oblige, lest he must be taken by force. May God Grant You Wisdom, Peter III, by the grace of GOD Holy Orenian Emperor, forever August, King of Renatus, Curon, Kaedrin, Salvus, and Seventis, Prince of Malinor, Grand Duke of Ves, Duke of Lorraine and Roden, Baron of Sedan, Vitzburg, and Sedai, Protector of the Heartlanders, Highlanders, and Farfolk, etcetera. OOC: Type of War: Liberation Belligerents: The Holy Orenian Empire vs. Corwin Alstreim Goal: Capture of leadership (Corwin Alstreim / LithiumSedai) Time: Saturday, July 11th - to be discussed further.
