not that being gay is bad or anything it's just an insult thats deeply rooted in our culture and is related to bad things despite if you actually dislike gay people it has taken on a meaning of its own when used in an insult and is not in anyway related to the way you would think of a gay person. It is now more used as an expression of something being bad, unfortunately seeming now related to being gay, which makes 'gay' seem bad.

While your argument is considerable there is one flaw. That is not the truth, over a gradual period of time I've noticed a steady decline in the word being used homophonically or with derogatory intent; thus that being it is not something to worry too much about! However this thesis does not extend to govern the individuals who are below the age of 18 and yet still continuously use the word to rack point upon point to what I like to call the "Masculinity Game". In summary, there are two sides to your argument; one "High-School" type culture that fails to see an ever changing society and one "Mature" culture and of which I've noticed a decline in the use of such a term.
Justifications for what I label as the "Masculinity Game" and "High-School Culture", are further rooted in areas like anthropology. I am merely no expert on this field and that being said I cannot back up my argument with proper evidence or the proper qualifications. This is merely speculation, please do not quote me on my above argument unless it is being used casually. Furthermore all of the above arguments are merely my own humble observation, it could be different in your case; or where you are. Since humanity has a vast and diverse range of cultures and societies, there are most certainly hidden variables to this debate of sorts over the current state of mind within the post-homophobic society of North America I see as 2017.
