Why, in the days of yore, did we require that a pontiff be elected from among the synod? Can not he that bore the cloth simply select a likeminded man to succeed him? To answer this we must remember that the synod, now known as the "College of Cardinals", are made up of some of the veteran clergymen, or at least those who seem like they are ready to join their ranks. Because of this, most of the college is filled with some of the most enlightened clergy that we have at this moment. Thus, if an election was given, a proper person would be chosen to lead GOD's flock. But with the system currently implemented, we can only hope that the pontiffs that succeed Lucien IV will not be deceived when picking an heir. What would this entail? It would very well give us a line of incapable priests who will continue to select their ill-versed comrades. We can only hope if such a thing happens, that one would finally select another able-bodied pontiff, but at the same time, it all could repeat itself. I do not suggest Lucien IV, lord bless his name, is a bad choice, simply that he should be wary when he either selects an heir or abolishes this current system.
