How Do I Create A 'stable' Character?

It's been my bane, ever seen I got back on from a little hiatus on the server, I simply can't keep characters for more than a week and it really bugs me. It's not a lack of interest I'd say, but more of a I keep getting ideas of characters I want to try out, and… I get what I have now, 20 characters created in the span of a month and I'm only actively playing three of them. So my question is, How can I create a character that will go the test of time and that I won't go run off and make another for?

((Don't need the join whatever races and who-ha, would just like some pointers, Thanks yo.))

Stay with friends.  Do something that is fun and has constant roleplay so you don't get bored and want to make a new character for no reason.

Set goals for your character, set out to achieve those goals. Or find a guild or a group that has consistent roleplay so you can develop a character. Have an obligation, almost, to keep playing them.

Also, don't feel pressure to play a single character. Maybe you're just a player who supplies new characters and new roleplay every few days, and that's okay. Keeps things from getting repetitive, for you or for others.

I find that characters are hard to commit too as well.
My advice is simply to persevere, even when a character gets boring.
But when that happens make an effort to make your character interesting.

For example; one of the first things I do with my characters,
Is riddle them with bad habits.
My character Mason Owynson used to smoke. A lot.
And everyone in the White Rose was like "Ew, stop."
But it created an interesting dynamic/relationship with other characters.

Furthermore, something that many people tend to overlook,
is setting out an overall goal for their character.
I find that most peoples first character is their favourite.
And what does the first application you fill out ask you?
"What do you hope to achieve on this server."

Having something to look forward to and work towards
is a monumental help in many cases.
Also, there are most likely groups/guilds that you can join
in order to help you achieve that goal.
And perhaps they will help mould your character even more,
by adding smaller goals to your list.

But I just woke up. Don't listen to me.
I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I'd say if you really wanted to create a character that you'd stick with, start with a vague story of who they are and then go from there. If you start planning out who they are right away then it's like you've played them already and you get bored. Start with a name and where they came from then keep at it~

For me, I research and learn about everything that my character does, trying to get a feel for it so he becomes more real. If you don't know how and what they are doing in their skills, you would easily grow bored of role playing their craft, whatever it is.

When the character becomes easier to understand and more realistic, you begin to want to learn more about them as you role play, gaining new experiences as you go about, adding more to the feeling of realism. I spent 4-5 hours looking at different types of metals, shields, armors, smithing tools and just everything I personally find cool or interesting to get new ideas of what Dared could possibly create next.

Hobbies, collect something. And don't make it 'magic books', people will hate you. Perhaps old coins, or jewelry. Maybe make your character carve wooden models and sell them.

This. Also. Play them for the sake of playing them. Don't be afraid of change and don't rely on your characters appearance, but rather their personality. Appearance is way too easily changed and you can easily become a bit upset if you suddenly change such. Destroy the character almost if they're based upon such appearance. :)!

Make a normal character who acts realistically based off of how real people would in real life, but set a goal for yourself. Develop skills RPly, swordsman, smith, mage, etc. Make IC friends that develop your character's personality. When your character accomplishes his goals, make new goals. Etc, etc.

Do something you might do in real life. You'd probably get bored, but it is fun to see where it goes if you join a guild or such.

Give your character an ambition, and try to achieve it! It's the best way to have a realistic character and an interesting one. :3

I myself had the same problem in Aegis, within a week I had played as a Tavern Owner named MacDaddy, a Grey Skinned Dwarf, A priest who thought the Sky Gods were demons, and a Quest Giver. So here are some tips on making a lasting Character:

1. Establish a persona that fits in the lore!

If you have an idea for a character, research the lore. Because once you do, you will be more enticed to stay on a character you have been working heavily on developing.

2. Find a group of people or nation to play with.

This helps with making a good group of friends as well as people who will give you things to do on the odd occasion. Just like research you may want to look into some guilds that have interesting topics as well as originality as they tend to be the one which survive longer.

3. Establish long term goals.

Every character needs a purpose of living, just like in Skyrim how Dovakiin has to slay Alduine. What will make this goal interesting is all the 'side quests' or character developing tasks you can partake in which will give your character a bragging rights as well as a unique nature to them.

4. Keep a journal/Document/Whatever...

If you keep a book or some sort of record about your character, not only do you keep a list of what he/she has done, but you work on their importance as well as their possible renown. A character well known by others is a character with opportunities!

Hopefully these tips helped, I'm sure plenty of other people got something to throw in as well! Just as a summary, EFFORT = CHARACTER SURVIVAL.

Edit:

5. SKINS!!!

Making a good skin for your character or getting one will help make them 'worth' more.

Travel. Playing a character that is based in one location is fine, but if you have a tendency to get bored with a certain type of RP, make a character who isn't tied down. Someone who wanders the roads and towns will let you go wherever you want to find RP without needing to switch characters. They could also have diverse interests and like to try new things, so that you can take them down whatever path you feel like.
