Your View: Definition Of Trolling

 Share

Recommended Posts

I believe that trolling is a purposefully annoying act or joke that has the intent to annoy/upset other person. While I say this, I don't want to get too strict on it. If someone makes a small reference and that upsets someone (not pointing fingers) then I don't think it should be punished. Sure, they could told not to do it again, but even that would be overkill.

More serious ones like the ones that are mentioned in the OP is what I'd consider an annoyance... But in my mind that doesn't fall under trolling; moreso the rule that you're meant to stay in character whole time. Yes, it could be counted as trolling in my standards, but I'd argue it'd ruin the immersion more instead of making people upset. Or it might do both.

The definition in the OP is good so far.

I know Chi screwed it with Fire's post, but a lot of you should be warned for trolling, and bad behavior on the forums right now... I think this thread is kind of like the perfect example now of what should be for more banned from LOTC.

[edit] On second look, only this second page.

This thread was a bad... bad... idea. It baits the 'trolls'. :p

But seriously, 'trolling' is a bad word to use, because what we define as 'trolling' is not the textbook definition, nor should it be. There is no problem with having some light-hearted RP now and again. However, shouting that an AC-130 is inbound... that's not okay.

My view is that this entire endeavor is pointless. More than pointless, it's counterproductive as it wastes time we could be spending developing clear rules.

Don't try and hammer down a "trolling" definition so you can ban "trolling". It's a vaccous meme word in constant fluctuation, trying to define it is a fool's errand and will get you nowhere. You might as well put a rule in banning "edgies".

If you're going to put in new rules to regulate player behavior, use unambigious phrasing. Rather than wasting your time trying to define a word with a fractal of definitions, decide what is permissible, what is not, and lay down those rules in plain English.

Enforce already rules such as no breaking character. Don't waste time redefining something.

The rule is about harassment and deliberately breaking character. These are already punishable offences. I agree with Lago that talking about trolling serves no purpose when it is not the act of trolling that is to be punished, but certain acts that may or may not be considered trolling. Harassment is harassment and should be judged more harshly than it has been, particularly in game.

So if the intention was to define clearly what will be considered punishable offences in preparation for so bearing down upon the community, then it could have been done more deliberately; yes. But the point still should stand. May due punishment be unleashed like a wounded bull.

Hey this was put up finally?

When the staff finally makes "Your View" topics to ask for a definition, rather than policy changes that drastically alter the nature of the most recent war ****-show and the server itself. (The source of most of the server's 'trolling' to date, on forums and in game)

There is no "trolling." If you say a word too many times it becomes meaningless.

Example?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVn1oQL9sWg

It's just like "edgy", "troll" is just a term used to demean some group of people or style of RP or race or player or whatever. It's an insult, that's all it is. Banning "trolling" is like banning "being a little ****", sure, it's obvious. Nobody wants you being a little **** on the server, in neither the literal or figurative sense. This is what bothers me.

Banning trolling could simply mean killing legitimate RP because GM on the case simply considers it "trolling." It's an easy way for a GM to just ban someone over bias.

Instead of trying to arbitrarily define a word whose meaning has been totally altered to the point of non-recognition on this server, why don't we enforce the rules like no breaking character ingame, no flaming on the forums etc. and ignore "trolling"?

The word "troll" is terrible for LotC, and this thread is perfect evidence of that. It's been used to promote over-sensitivity.

 >this

Some people do lighthearted or nonsensical things in RP. Some do unserious or snide things in RP. Others even do completely absurd and irritating things in RP, but none of these people should be banned unless they sincerely mean to disrupt RP. Even then, we don't need to go through this bizarre crackdown or define the term in a way it's not, that's just confusing.

Like Aislin said, we need to simply crack down on OOC influence on RP, or OOC in RP for that matter. Our real problem is that we as a community let too much of our Out Of Character hatred or other emotion into Role-Play and it's having a drastic effect on the overall quality of role-playing on the server. There aren't trolls or gremlins or kebabs or strelts or flays running around poisoning the RP with trolly item-hungry PvP, which is the generic bread and butter argument that's been thrown around a lot lately.

Right now we're on a overbuilt, scarred, griefed-as-**** temp map in which the main nations are pointlessly fighting each other and yelling at each other. Nobody is willing to stop the war simply because after it there is absolutely nothing to do. The map is so utterly featureless and contains so little by means of events or RP opportunities that we've basically reverted to clicking each other pointlessly for amusement. I can assure you come 4.0 we won't have half of this "troll" RP simply because people will have better things to do than "troll."

Suffice to say there is no reason for this thread to exist. I wish that an FM would lock it or delete it.
