Remove Trap!

Sieges in the fringe have been literally disgusting because of the amount of traps and other assorted crap in some bases around the place, such as Mount Augustus.

- Do not allow upward facing lava traps (dispensers on the ground)

- Do not allow 'oil' traps from above which flow indefinitely during battles, a gm should use a bucket to simulate the trap running out of oil after about 20 seconds or whatever.

- Do not allow instantly retractable floors/falling traps.

- Do not allow underground areas of castles/forts which are about 20x bigger than the above part, with anklebiters, traps and all that crap. Small dungeons and prison areas are ok.

- Do not allow excessive amounts of buttons to be placed on walls to prevent laddering up.

I want sieges like the Battle of the Dreadfort back. Those were the days.

Murder holes, sallies forth, etc. They're what makes a good exciting siege.

There were some great battles that had traps with them. I was in both of them and the traps made the battlefield so much more dangerous, yet awesome.

For example, Orcs Among the Grain, and the Battle of West Alras. Both large-scale battles had multiple traps(set up by dwarves), but both belligerents could agree those battles were pretty epic, and good.

But I do agree, hundreds of spread pitfall traps suck, and retractable piston floors can ruin someone's war experience by just being stuck in a hole and getting stabbed by some people above.

As for buttons, just use stairs(they're aesthetically more pretty than buttons) or add a block or two going outwards to the very top of the walls, so if someone tries to climb over with ladders, they'll be met with a horizontally placed wall of sorts.

So yeah, +1

But people don't want fun, they want to win!

I agree of course, but as usual it's a problem with the playerbase not the system.

or add tnt back so we can just get through like in asulonia!

Oddly I agree with much of this. I have fallen victim to traps being left open on accident and thus killing me (thankfully we have the head plugin.

Button walls look horrid and provide protection instead of asthetics. Build walls with layers like stairs and alcoves, not buttons.

I don't think it's one or the other. The system allows the players to do this, so in a way, they're both broken!

I'm not big on PVP but even I see that the amount of traps and sieges are comical. I do know, however, that the playerbase does like to have fun, obviously... Maybe if these new rules were put into place in a way that made it FUN and not like having a your PVP toys taken away, the players would like it.

That's true, but players never went this far in the past with traps which is exactly why the system doesn't limit them! Players cried out in the past for simpler, more concise rules, so we never wrote rules for things we never expected players to do. But because of the 'arms race' of people trying their hardest to win, we've had more and more cheap and cheesy tactics emerging that we have to now write rules about (which players are going to be grumpy about!).

The system is written around the players after all, since Minecraft is a very emergent game as opposed to a themepark MMO or the like.

Anyways, on topic... traps are fine... in moderation. However I doubt anything new is going to be enforced with 4.0 right around the corner.

Thats why I put this in the 4.0 section, so that 4.0 wont have this bs.

There need to be some sort of regulations. Elves left their insta-lava traps open after a fight, and I walked in on my way to my house. Just to lose 40 diamonds and 40 iron blocks that I was transporting.

The server is shaping up to be a PvP Factions-Towny server atm.

Players get minimal protections to avoid unsanctioned damages, which leads to exploits to bypass defences.

(If we had TNT, people would be using TNT cannons to breach walls.)

The typical slop of a Factions server prior to combat is replaced by, "Dave Swings at Rick. ((5-4-3-2-1))" and there's no real limitation or loss to raiding. There are a good 20 abandoned crap-shacks and forts all over the map. Every major structure has some incredibly un-rp maze of booby traps and pit falls and the best part about A LOT of this crap, we're just attracting more Factions-PVP folks.

When we win or lose, the most RP anyone gets out of it is, "Victory 'generic trolly regard.' 'Group' just got rekt. KEK. Ok guys, lets go **** post."

Will people **** bricks because you changed their rules? Of course they will but, rules are what shape the server into what it's trying to be.

-1

People are reacting to the constant raiding by defending themselves, can you really blame them?

Come 4.0 there won't be traps everywhere, just guarding settlements.  Considering how many conflict liking players we have I don't see the logic in taking away people's ability to defend their towns/settlements.
