Why I Stepped Down.

In response to this thread.

I'll give my two cents on the whole ordeal, since I was the person on the other end of the table and I'd like to clear up any confusion.

I have many people asking me why I stepped down from Grand King, I'll explain here in chronological order. Preface; I did not leave because Oren was winning, it's because Oren CANNOT win, this is something many people seem to misunderstand. I became Grand King on the idea that I wanted to “save” the Dwarven race, or at least repair it to the point where people may enjoy each other’s company again and fight a greater threat in unity.

Right when Zahrer Irongrinder stepped down from Grand King the Kingdom was in shambles, Grandaxes exiled, Ironguts remained neutral and just retreated back into Hiebenhall, the entire Kingdom suffered since Dwarven numbers weren’t large.

When they reached their lowest point, “The March of Men” warclaim was posted and I felt it was a cheap shot towards the Dwarves, smart, but cheap. This was the moment I decided to step up and take the reins of Grand King for myself, I came late into the election for Grand King and won, I made the following promises to the Dwarven people.

  • I would unite the Dwarves once again under one banner, met with much skepticism I did.

  • I would defend Hiebenhall and deliver a victory which the Dwarves haven’t had in a long time, met with much skepticism I did.

  • I would weed out the “corruption” in the Kingdom and introduce a new, and fair Government system, with much skepticism once again, I did.

  • Beat back big bully Oren, I didn’t.

Oren’s terms for peace can be found here, being the prideful Dwarf that I was, I obviously did not comply. Mind you I had absolutely no say in anything related to the Dwarven holds in the North, one being Kal’Bogrin which formerly was Hanseti, and Hiebenhall. When the warclaim was posted it was not my place to negotiate terms, but I tried pushing for a conquest since it’s more dynamic, fun and fair.

I had little less than a week to prepare for this warclaim. To mend the Kingdom’s wounds and get allies to join our cause was much harder than expected. Things were looking quite grim for us and not many people wanted to ally with the losing side, we were the underdog.

The day of the battle came and we won, not soon after the victory post I posted
this thread. I knew these terms were quite outrageous for a first official win and no sane man in his right mind would accept them, but that was not the point. The thread was created solely for one purpose; propaganda in order to raise morale and gain allies in the process, it worked.

Following our victory I felt everything turned sour and bitter in the following week leading up to the next warclaim. I tried promoting a fun gaming environment, but regardless of my efforts people were getting banned left and right along with several ban reports popping up here and there. This is where the line was drawn as it simply was not enjoyable anymore, even though I had no part in these bans I felt responsible simply because I was their King.

The next battle was held at Drakenburg in the North, we mustered quite a few people, I guess spamming five different Skype chats daily payed off, until we were met with a charge from Oren. It didn’t matter how many we killed, they just kept coming, what made it even worse was the lag, regardless of all that it was pretty damn epic and fun.

Here I came to the realization that there was no longer a point for me to stay, for I had fulfilled what I initially signed up for. If I was to stick around I’d have to wait another week for a warclaim on one of the Dwarven holds only to be denied again and turned into a pillage, the war became pointless, and even though Oren was superior in manpower, they are unable to progress or win because of the war rules.

You stayed true to your word and resigned after accomplishing most of what you promised. Although I hoped you would stick around longer, you did a grand job as King of Urguan, hopefully setting the stage for many more to come.

Good fight. Was nice meeting you on the field, Goldrim.

Orenia salutes you.

The unfortunate truth that Goldrim underlines is the fact that people take the no conquest without consent clause in the War rules as a way for them to drag on a war forever with really little consequence other than the potential drain of "roleplay" due to PVP (but in all seriousness, most impromptu skirmishes allow numbers to skyrocket instead, even if it is for just a 10 minute fight). The Skype chat to determine the War Rules worked hard, but I'm afraid that despite the efforts of myself and others there, the conquest with consent had to remain.

What's even worse is that the new War Rules, despite their more free-form design, have not had any proper guidance or full implementation (besides super simple TNT and a "war region"), so the entire idea of the War Rules is being thrown out the window before it is even actually used. I don't know who to fault for that, but I think something should be done about it.

What we had originally outlined in the plans for the War Rules was the treasury system (included in the current Rules, but very vageuly), which forced nations who were losing wars to eventually seek a peace before or after they went bankrupt (although going bankrupt immediately causes the bankrupt nation to seek a peace). I've seen no such system made or even realized by most people on the server, which is super bad!

So, to wrap this up: Let's see the Staff actually enforcing the rules that are outlined, and have those that created the Rules provide a better input on the intent of said rules.

You were actually my favorite Grand King, but then again, I've only been on the server for about a year.

Honestly I think you were a good king you tried to make this war just like Oren short and to the point by accepting conquest but because the staff is primarily incompetent and cannot see through the potential of war extending wars too long by making it consensual it can't be as fun. Now this war will continue to be a war of attrition with raids on the capital which also is disappointing. I was very sad that they removed road pvp forts because it made no sense, it really detracted all the pvp from happening in rp settlements and now people who just want to rp get raided lol. One mistake after another but the admins are too smart to realize that!

It's a double-edged sword: allow forced conquests and you get the community cohesion cataclysm that was Anthos, don't allow it and stuff like this happens.

The "solution" is for nation leaders to get along OOC, keeps everything civil and for fun rather than for OOC testosterone. Two leaders coordinating a war out of character works far, far better than two nations being at both IC and OOC war.

Its hard to do that when they always have to argue over these matters whether they should do conquest or not, whether their players broke the rules to win a skirmish or not there is always a factor in war that will make it un-friendly, thats why its war.

The best wars are the ones where the leadership of both nations get along with one another and can agree on warclaims, rules and so on. On the rare occasion that this does happen you get some of the most enjoyment you'll have on lotc with a mixture of both PvP and roleplay.

However because of the way the war rules are set up and some people taking wins and losses far too seriously this is a very rare occasion. It's a shame since lotc always has more players during these wars but they just can't happen anymore.
