Neri 3590 Share Posted October 24, 2015 Maybe we should just improve the hardware of the server rather then killing peoples ****?It's not that the server hardware is bad, it's that the horses are taking up a massively disproportionate amount of resources. The server hardware may be bad as well, I have no idea.
501warhead 1796 Author Share Posted October 24, 2015 (edited) Maybe we should just improve the hardware of the server rather then killing peoples ****?It's not that the server hardware is bad, it's that the horses are taking up a massively disproportionate amount of resources. The server hardware may be bad as well, I have no idea. The server hardware has been kept as up to date as possible. MC is not a very efficiently coded platform. It's a great game, but as with any procedural generated, constantly changing game it tends to run slower than most are use to (Java doesn't help either in this end). Other servers combat this by having many different worlds and several servers hosting these many different worlds, as LotC is a single-world setup and can't be subdivided, we're at an impasse where better hardware =/= greater performance (Which, to be fair, we actually did a very large upgrade just before we switched the forums.). The solution at this stage is to, instead of trying to tac a bandaid onto the situation is to instead address the issue and not just try to skirt around it. Horses are currently one of the largest issues. Edited October 24, 2015 by Why.
Selu 17 Share Posted October 24, 2015 I agree with the idea to cut back on how large horse farms are. I get the idea, and it seems very reasonable. But, when you're trying to breed and trade horses, isn't 8 as a max slightly low? You stated there's farms with 30+, which I agree is an issue. But maybe, like, 12 MAX would be a good middle-grounds? If you think otherwise, I'd at least like to hear more reason behind WHY the cap is going to be SO low.
_mkkk_ 194 Share Posted October 24, 2015 I'm just going to warn anyone staffing this decision there will be people who attempt to avoid their horses dying most likely by passing them out to their friends to temporarily hold until another point in time when this passes. Almost like how the story of Moses begins in the bible. . . except maybe a horse in Lotc may end up parting a huge body of water with a single 'Nay'!
Sky 0 Share Posted October 24, 2015 I hope you don't mistake stables housing individuals horses, to horse farms. A stable that has eight horses, may very well belong to eight separate individuals and reducing them to six, would give us two very unhappy players. This has been maths with Sky.

zaezae 1098 Share Posted October 24, 2015 Before more knee-jerking that I've grown used to happens. I've never used that VisualVM, but if it literally means 12% of of the CPU's time is spent on horses then yes, murder them. that's kinda really surprising to me. I'd wager you could kill all animals but horses and you wouldn't reduce the amount of work equal to what the horses demand.

lawnmowerman 3040 Share Posted October 25, 2015 Can this also be forced upon the Kharajyr? I feel their numbers have peaked too high and should quite frankly be dropped.

River 555 Share Posted October 25, 2015 (edited) Regardless of how people react to this kind of thing, 1.9 will introduce improved mob collision, with what people think might also bring back player collision, which would lag the server incredibly. The players in general need to get used to not spamming 50 chickens in a 5x5 pen because the lag disparity between what it is now and what it would be in the future is much greater.
