Let's Talk; The Magic Plugin & Magic in General

Having been here when the original promise of a magic plugin for the masses was made during Aegis, and when the players of LotC were let down over and over and over again, I find this conclusion ultimately to be almost bittersweet.

I think the magic plugin would just add a simple side- benefit to the mages, although It'd require copious amounts of time for the MAT and the dev team to actually do something like it. In my opinion, the plugin itself was not extremely necessary, because magic in RP has little to no limits. From the voidal art, conjuration to maybe soul puppeteering. No one can fit one's imagination with the arts into a plugin, no matter how many days or months were spent on it. I really enjoy the current Magic Lore, It's extremely well written in my part.

All in all, I think that the text based style of Magic Roleplay is sustainable and fun as it is. Though I still thank all the devs for their work on the plugin, even if it wasn't released.

I think that we should simplify the Lore in exchange for a magic plugin. SO many people have been waiting for it for SO long and I think if you have a ready one, you should release it. The majority of the player base would be very pleased and it would give woodworkers + stonemasons another use. Please release it.

Man the **** up and remove lore that causes problems to the server in general. If something is actually so complicated that it infringes on your holy accessibility then maybe you should just tell the writer to make it easier, change it or bye bye lore. It's not like everyone is going to be happy no matter what happens.

The MAT has always be a massive joke anyway, and the Magic plugin just a promise that appeased those people that couldn't bear normal PVP cause "My character is so strong he'd kill u all." and didn't have the capacity to be creative about their defeat.

ggwp good thing for lotc even if i doubt it was actually ever complete

"Be creative about their defeat"?  You mean being PVP defaulted to death?  Powergaming should not be encouraged, however it's not fair for a person who could actually hold their own be forced to be pvpd down with no mechanical chance.

It's ironic you actually use the line about people not wanting to be creative about their defeat when it's a majority of the time people like you who resort to PVP default who can't handle anything other than one party dying.  Hypocrite.

That post has good some good thoughts, I want self teaching back myself. I'd take the time to write up a big ol thing on how I think magic should be fixed but honestly would probably not make an impact on the decision at all. Staff puts these opinion things up and suggestion thread but they delete you when they don't like what you say. Oh well.

Yeah, I always used to PVP because I spent 90% of my time writing books in whatever high elven city existed when I still played. Stfu when you don't know what you're talking about. Kid.

Meanwhile, since you shouldn't actually care too much about loosing, here's an example to expand your fun and marvelous RP horizons.

*Bandit walks up to T5 firemage, asks for gold.*

*Firemage conjures balls of fire, tells him to **** off.*

*Bandit takes a step back, raises sword.*

*Firemage trips on his robes or a rock, falls to the ground*

*Bandit stabs him*

There, problem solved. Can be applied to nearly any situation, just have something happen to your character. But I mean, you don't want that cuz you're convinced in your own imaginary supremacy(op) and should never loose.

This specific example is my exact RP style.  However the flip side here is that our community who enjoy winning on an OOC level targets those who cannot PVP fight.  So it becomes more of a chore overtime to do this over and over again.  So those who end up getting pissed and wanting to defend themselves I can understand totally.   But at that same level characters should not just keep losing all the time just because they're strong.  There has to be a medium.

This is objectively the best way to ensure magic is RPd fairly, is to not rp it at all.

I like the staff idea since it adds a tangible RP cost to using the magic (since staves are made of valuable resources). People who PVP as normal soldiers or archers have a certain investment they risk when they pvp (armour, sword, bow, food), so mages should too. If the cost/strength of magic were balanced and not just having it's weakness chalked up to cooldowns or mana (a essentially infinite resource) then people are less likely to abundantly (ab)use it.

We even HAVE the stave architecture in place, with the various staves being made of more valuable resources, taking longer to make, and requiring more expert craftsman. Swap the staves from sticks to hoes, and you have a tool with durability that can be used to cast rudimentary spells in the colour of your magical school. Nothing complicated!

But that would be a reasonable solution. Can't have none of that on LotC.

Staff Idea! Staff Idea! Shall I make a player view to brainstorm a fix to the loss of the magic plugin that doesn't include wiping magic or creating an unorthodox plugin?

I for one would like to see these scrapped plugins and also this plugin apparently Telanir was showing off.

Personally as a long time players of LoTC this is the sin which much of our lore is guilty of, its an ugly amalgamation of people's personal desires, wants and ideas given form then shoved in a database with a horrid standard of format. Personally I suggest all lore be required to come in two forms 1: The written app lore which is used mostly for reference and 2: At max 2 IG books listing all important factors, something a new player could be handed and instantly get a good idea of the magic, and it's dos and don'ts. A lot of lore writers seem to think they are J.R.R. Tolkien and that what they write is amazing. It's not.

And the more horrid magic lore we add the worse the original magic lore get. Because this is how things work- Write magic lore, someone writes new magic lore, rewrite magic lore to explain new magic's weaknesses to old magic, get told that's not how it works by new magic lore writer. **** gets ugly a few weeks later when a user from each fights and no one can decide how anything works.. Or how about cognitisim where a bunch of people have re written their lore so it's abilities can't allow you to learn their magic.

I'm not for removing magic, I am for however putting a limit on the ability for lore magic writers to freestyle new magic and new abilities out of thin air and for a more compact simple standard form for magic lore.

If someone goes and writes a new magic lore and for how each ability works puts "Cause its frigin magic, duh" instead of the 4 paragraph bs I've come to expect I will cry at the beauty of it..seriously, how is "cause its magic duh" not been used as a reason yet on accepted magic? Why do we need to know how a fireball is created by a magic user or how they teleport 100 feet in one direction..we don't cause magic, doh! Long as it fits with the general magic form type, that should be all that's needed.

As for locked magics not effecting us so we don't need to have an opinion, well that's wrong. The fact is the moment you cast a spell on someone and they thing it was down power game wise or wrong lore wise they have to go back and re read your 40  paragraph mess, so if those same people say enough then you better frigin bet its enough.

As for locked magic and magic lore that's impossible to understand, it doesn't matter what you the magic user or the lore writer think the fact is the moment you use it on someone else it becomes open to criticism and examination by the rest of the server. And that means that your complicated impossible to understand lore doe snot cut it.
