The Inventory Fallout - Friday April 1st

Do you expect people to screenshot everything they have in their inventory every 10 or so minutes in case a gm happens to fall for a obviously command that affects all, hence the '*' in it. I don't know how you could fall for /ci * and think it would wipe your own inventory.

Reading this, I'm very glad I'm in Pacific Time.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman of Lord of the Craft.

This afternoon, at roughly 1800 hours (GMT), a server wide Inventory Wipe occurred for all players online due to a mistake and underestimation of a command by myself. The wipe effected roughly 90 or so players who were online at the time of the fallout, and was responsible for the complete and total loss of all items within any and all online players inventory at the time of the event. I will personally place my hands up and admit and accept responsibility for this disastrous, and most definitely, poorly timed event.

Details

So what happened? Well, I allowed myself to be tricked by a player through an April Fools joke into performing a command which I personally believed to result in an output alternative to what the command actually did, to which I foolishly fell for. On every server I have previously been a part of, the command "/ci *" has performed an inventory wipe on yourself, or a selected player you place in at the end of the command as an argument. This was used to prevent accidental wiping (how ironic) of inventories.

I was under the generalised impression that this was a global command across every server. I was, as evident now, entirely incorrect. Regardless, I was pulled into a Party with a certain player, and was informed of a borked inventory on his part. I tried to use the command "/ci * [insert player name]", to which it did not work. I then tried the command without the player's name to test it on myself, to which Essentials did what essentials does best, and activated a command which no one was expecting.

Solution

The player has since been banned, and the Admin, Dev and GM Team are all working closely now to ensure preventative measures are put in place to ensure nothing like this may occur again, and a sufficient solution is delivered to compensate for this grave mistake on my part. For one, the use of the command /ci * has, thankfully, been stricken from everyone's permissions, ensuring that this mistake does not occur once more. As for your reimbursement, a screenshot was taken immediately after the fallout of all the players who were currently online as the event occurred.

If you were online, and if you did indeed lose your items due to this, we ask you to submit one modreq, stating what items you as a player have lost due to the incident. The GM Team will be working through the list, through each player who has lost their items, and will be refunding each victim with most of the supplies and RP items, giving out, with moderation, the items that were lost. The GM Team will be working within reason to reimburse as much as we can.

Apology

I sincerely and wholeheartedly apologise to  the player base for misunderstanding and fooling for an April Fools joke cast by a member of our own community, which resulted in the loss of a multitude of items, taking full responsibility for this mistake. I was not aware of the result it would produce, and granted, while that is no excuse for the event, I hope at least some level of understanding will come from the situation we have just been presented with. I personally, among with the other diligent members of the GM team, will be working to repair the damage this has caused.

To hopefully make at least one person feel slightly better about this horrible event, here is an image which depicts how foolish the cause of this situation was.

A small pessimistic note but banning this player? It is your responsibility too to actually not fall things like this.

Despite what people may say or think, good on you for owning up and taking responsibility. Not many people actually would.

At the end of the day; items can be replaced and they're fixing it.

Happy dayz!

Everyone makes accidents, no one is perfect. GMs are not perfect, they're people too and mistakes happen tbh, pixels can be made again and found. It's not like people don't grind on  daily basis.

The player in question is an alt of a banned player, and a player who has been continuously detrimental to the server. He was banned because of that reason.

And no, this isn't a joke.

It's certainly not a joke. It was a mistake but like a regular player there needs to be actions taken. Nothing personal, simply fairness in all it's glory. If a player(non staff) where to do a thing equal in severity that affected a large group of players then that'd be a ban most likely.

I thought this was a joke since this is happening coincidently on April fools day xD. Anyway one question,  are we aloud to have eye witnesses of us using the gear? since we cannot be expected to have a screenshot of our items.

Where do you pull your precedent from?  How exactly would a player accidentally do anything similar?  You can't make claims like this that don't have any basis in fact.  It would be different if it was done on purpose or multiple times, but it was an accident.

I don't understand where the daggers of unforgiving revenge are coming from.  People make mistakes.  Let his record reflect the infraction and move on.

Alright, so I write this in a halfway state of unknowing if I should or shouldn't, not wishing to be given backlash for having a differing opinion but also wishing to give the other side a (albeit small) voice, even give out my opinion and well, here it is.

I do see this as a big mistake, clearly Tahmas is sorry and that everyone is happy he owned up to it, taking it on the chin and all that. There's just a couple things that sit on my mind after this incident that doesn't seem right and I do apologize if what I say angers you but I truly need to say this publicly. While in school, in work and in the real life, mistakes that cause grief to people (whether able to be fixed or not) are usually punishable and I know this is a video game where leniency should be considered, because we are here for fun. The idea of "It was just a mistake" sits weird for some reason, I'm not really asking for anything just saying my opinion really.

As I see it, if someone tells you to do a command, wouldn't you question what it would do instead of using it? Though, I'm not a minecraft wonder, actually bought it fairly recently honestly but I know that if I didn't know a command I wouldn't use it because a player told me to. I'm not trying to bully Tahmas, I am very grateful for all the work he has done for the server though we are all equals, no? If a player is punishable for telling the moderator for doing something, surely the moderator would be punishable for doing it and inturn that causing mass grief for everyone. I keep seeing people say this public apology is a punishment, but it really isn't and somewhat breeds the childlike idea of "If I apologize everything will be fixed!"

Now, yes I am a new player and my voice is probably going to be overseen due to inexperience but I needed to say this. Sorry Tahmas.

To be honest, if I was a GM and someone told me to do it, I'd probably do it for curiosities sake.

Ah well, you win some, you lose some.

At least it wasn't arocksta28 doing /nuke again.

Why was my first post deleted?

It was inflammatory and unhelpful.

@ The above, I definitely don't believe NOTHING should be done, just he shouldn't be removed from the team.
