The Inventory Fallout - Friday April 1st

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon, ladies and gentleman of Lord of the Craft.

This afternoon, at roughly 1800 hours (GMT), a server wide Inventory Wipe occurred for all players online due to a mistake and underestimation of a command by myself. The wipe effected roughly 90 or so players who were online at the time of the fallout, and was responsible for the complete and total loss of all items within any and all online players inventory at the time of the event. I will personally place my hands up and admit and accept responsibility for this disastrous, and most definitely, poorly timed event.

Details

So what happened? Well, I allowed myself to be tricked by a player through an April Fools joke into performing a command which I personally believed to result in an output alternative to what the command actually did, to which I foolishly fell for. On every server I have previously been a part of, the command "/ci *" has performed an inventory wipe on yourself, or a selected player you place in at the end of the command as an argument. This was used to prevent accidental wiping (how ironic) of inventories.

I was under the generalised impression that this was a global command across every server. I was, as evident now, entirely incorrect. Regardless, I was pulled into a Party with a certain player, and was informed of a borked inventory on his part. I tried to use the command "/ci * [insert player name]", to which it did not work. I then tried the command without the player's name to test it on myself, to which Essentials did what essentials does best, and activated a command which no one was expecting.

Solution

The player has since been banned, and the Admin, Dev and GM Team are all working closely now to ensure preventative measures are put in place to ensure nothing like this may occur again, and a sufficient solution is delivered to compensate for this grave mistake on my part. For one, the use of the command /ci * has, thankfully, been stricken from everyone's permissions, ensuring that this mistake does not occur once more. As for your reimbursement, a screenshot was taken immediately after the fallout of all the players who were currently online as the event occurred.

If you were online, and if you did indeed lose your items due to this, we ask you to submit one modreq, stating what items you as a player have lost due to the incident. The GM Team will be working through the list, through each player who has lost their items, and will be refunding each victim with most of the supplies and RP items, giving out, with moderation, the items that were lost. The GM Team will be working within reason to reimburse as much as we can.

Apology

I sincerely and wholeheartedly apologise to  the player base for misunderstanding and fooling for an April Fools joke cast by a member of our own community, which resulted in the loss of a multitude of items, taking full responsibility for this mistake. I was not aware of the result it would produce, and granted, while that is no excuse for the event, I hope at least some level of understanding will come from the situation we have just been presented with. I personally, among with the other diligent members of the GM team, will be working to repair the damage this has caused.

To hopefully make at least one person feel slightly better about this horrible event, here is an image which depicts how foolish the cause of this situation was.

I still don't know how the **** you could put in 10000 instead of 10.

As for this fallout, I was not affected, fortunately, but I think in general that GMs should be introduced to commands properly first before they go about things.

You don't know me but for what it is worth, It was a mistake and we are all human. Obviously a lesson to be learned however do not take it too hard. It will be rectified, and you guys are genuinely doing your best to fix it.

Mistakes happen and a safeguard was made for the future.

My advice is to get away for a day and do something else. Clear your head of this nonsense, and come back stronger.

It's just stuff and there are bigger things to life :)
