The Death of A King

Recommended Posts

4th of the Deep Cold 1582

The disease ridden and dangerous Orcish jungles gave Andrik little issue, from campaigning to the south to being dispatched in the west to deal with the rebellious High Elves. Andrik found no issue slaying the enemies of the Empire, yes he was a prince, but he enjoyed being a soldier.

One of his men caught a deer the night before, providing the meat they are now eating for breakfast. Roasted venison was some of his favorite, he had not eaten meat for a few days since they were patrolling far from any official settlements. One of his scouts would shout “Rider!”, all the soldiers quickly would gather their arms, and the prince no different. A man adorned with a second Legion uniform carrying a letter. “Lord Barbanov?” the rider would call out, presenting a letter with the wax seal of house Barbanov.

il_570xN.558917202_pdyw.jpg

Andrik would take the letter, his natural grimace not leaving his face. As he began to read it.

“Lord Barbanov,

Your father has passed away in his sleep, the diseases that he has been fighting him have finally overtaken him. By all accounts, he died peacefully in his sleep. Attached to this are his last words.

-Rick

Beneath the official writing would have a small paragraph, hand written obviously by Petyr Barbanov.

Andrik, my son, I am sorry to not hold this Kingdom longer for you. I do not look forward to making you endure the stresses of leadership, but I know are ready for it. You will be a great king my son, perhaps the greatest Haense has seen. Protect your sisters, protect your brothers, and greatest of all, protect your people as no one else will.”

-Your Father, Petyr Barbanov

Upon finishing reading the letter, a sharp sigh would be emitted. Andrik rolls the message, waving away the messenger. He’d gesture over for his Decurion, ordering the Legionaries present to prepare to dismantle camp and return back to Haense. After the order being dispatched, Andrik found himself alone, contemplating on the news of he had just received, his frown deepening. Wincing briefly, Andrik would recall himself, resuming his natural scowl, marching back to his Legionaries the trip back to Haense would be long and cold.

A rider atop a black horse, adorned in dark armor. To the many houses of Haense and the Imperial Palace. From the rocky coast of Vasililand to the tall forests of Turov the rider would stop, giving messages with the wax seal of the Kingdom of Haense.

The dour count of Dyfne, Vitallius, remained in his fortress, raised on the horse-shoe shaped isle outside Johannesburg. As the doleful news struck him, his lips curved down into a taut scowl, nose scrunching after. He picked up a quill, dipped it in ink and flattened out a piece of parchment, scribbling down his condolences to the new King in the North, Andrik, and the House of Barbanov.

Promptly after it was sent, he'd retrieve a cross-bow and bolts, heading out to the conquered orcish jungles to butcher the near-extinct race to cope with the impactful loss.

Spoiler

A scream echoes out into the halls of Haense's snow-blanketed castle during the early morning, the usually undisturbed peace a deafening nightmare for the youngest daughter to the late King Barbanov.

Woken by the commotion and a banging on her door from one of her numerous siblings, Tatiana stood there still in her sleeping gown. Her head swam, and she tried to recall if she had said goodnight to him- Had she? What if she'd forgotten?

There was no way for the girl to focus, her face felt hot and her throat tightened, a deep, choking dread. It was all she could do to wail, on her own at first, until she felt arms around her. Was it her sister? She couldn't quite remember, and the words of consolation failed to reach her.

As soon as she could talk Tatiana Barbanov had fussed and worried over her father, sticking by his side when he was on his feet, and bidding him greetings and partings all the days when he wasn't. Perhaps a part of her knew it was inevitable that he wouldn't be fit to last like this forever, though she denied it so.

Now it had finally come to pass, her world shattered, and she was an orphan.

The young Lord Baruch and his brother, Harold, hear of the tragic news brought by the royal messenger. A water haze blurs Eirik's vision; his eyes filling with tears. "It was expected, Eirik." His brother had told him, but the knowledge in Eirik's mind was overshadowed by the hope of his liege's recovery. The late King Petyr had helped the Baruch twins through their youth in Axios, and the pair thrived as a consequence of his intervention. Both Harold and Eirik had loved their liege like a father; this news bringing back memories of their actual father's departure from the world in Vailor. "We should go to Saint Karlsburg and reaffirm our vows to King Andrik." The pair moved silently to their chambers, collecting the relevant items for their short, but painful journey to seat of their much loved late Lord.
