A Public Speech in Linandria

A copper skinned 'ame takes an unofficial stand by Linandria's fountain facing the inner city, wrapped in blue. She offers a mug of ale to all who would gather.

"My kin. We've clearly adopted Axios as our home, and it accommodates us well. I've now lived here in these forest valleys longer than in my birthplace and we've reared our newest children here. And I fear, family, that the land we reap is in danger. Not from orcs or magic, but from ourselves.

"Malin was the firstborn. He lived quietly for many years, taking his place as a uniter and a king when he realized how ignorant his children were. He taught us, formed the culture our descendants kept for the longest time. We exist in this manner but because of our earliest progenitor and our loyalty to him. I say to you, we've forgotten him. He has been gone so long that the structure he built is crumbling, and has crumbled before. Men like my father have smoothed new mortar over the bricks. But I tell you, it isn't enough.

"We've lost our principles before. Those older than me remember the city-state Malinor. Those well-versed know that our cousins strayed long ago. Elven blood suffered each time. And today, we suffer - we certainly suffer! Look at the cinders and boiling sap made by dragonfire. Look how we must ward our gates to keep out unnatural creatures. While the godly forces aren't of the world, they threaten to collapse our civilization as would any storm created by the Aspect's wrath.

"How could we, the children of the forest, the saviors of nature, us worshipers incur the anger of Cernunnos? It is the willful ignorance. Malin was the Aspect's first voice in man. He taught us much, and much we have chosen to forget. I may be young, but consider the severity that I have witnessed all of this firsthand in only forty years. Our people have neglected to leave our safe lake, to walk the dark canopied forest where beasts roam. How often have any of you left for worship in hunting? How many times have you seen children explore and climb trees? Who of you remembers to sacrifice what you take?

"While there is no crime in it, there is a crime in ignoring our core principles. They are to praise the Aspect's bounty, to live alongside the world, to care for our kin, and to stay as one kind. White, grey and brown elves are all kindred, and all of them we must accommodate - however, there is clear distinction between elf and any other descendant. Elves lived as one, solid and homogenous for as long as we have existed. It profit nothing to turn into a cesspool, to degrade ourselves and debase ourselves and prostrate ourselves in the name of empathy. There are those who find love to extend to abomination. There are those that are blinded by sympathy. The unpleasant reality of life is that we must retain our principles beyond all else, and to worship the Aspects, to live as one and in peace with nature, we must act as nature intend.

"Let this be a warning, and I will make it clear. Malin does not tolerate laxness or weakness of principle. The earth does not have sympathy. Those who still love what we as wood elves stand for, harden your hearts. The pretenses will be stripped away, and we will be a city of wood elves again."

A transcript of the speech is copied and posted in the town center.

Arahaelth received a copy of the speech and read it in her room, alone. Once finished she laid her head back on the pillows of her sick bed. "Sh-she has a way w-with words...
