On the Unification of the Halflingish Smallfolk

The Halflings fleeing Lenfarthing, c. 1400 Fumble Willowbottom

Starting in the Year of the Harvest 600, Smallfolk called Halflings made a gradual exodus from the cities unto the countryside of the Farthings. Herein, they settled in numerous communities spread throughout the hills and lived peacefully.

Eventually, in the Year of the Harvest 1200, the halfling communities were unified into a singular entity by the noble intents of the Great Families: Tooke, Goodbody, and Brandybuck(1). It was during this era of singular unity that the Secondary Notables(2) emerged as prominent figures. Under the leadership of those Notable Elders Gimblo, Len, and Kip, the great mind Petyr Brandybuck came into the village of Dunwood.

From that point, the Village Culture declined and rose at random. It experienced several revivals and has been the longest standing governmental system of the halflings. Only at brief times since the Old Age has there been more than one village. A notable time of two villages was that of the Strawberry Vale and the Summerset Shire; the Somersetians rising atop the Strawberrians whence Mayor Rolo I ‘the Great’ came into office. Under the singular village format, halfling kind has rose to be independent of foreign malpractices and, in each case, sustained some form of an active, bustling commerce(3).

Despite cultural splits, such as that between Reedsborrougher and Mellsburian communities, Improperism and Properism mindsets, Hobbit and Pure-Halfling ethnicities, etcetera, the foremost necessity is to view ourselves as Halflings. Above all else. We are Halflings, those who fled from the bustle of the city life and ghettos. Those who celebrate merriment and joy, relax with a pipe overlooking the fields, and tend the animals. We are not efficient, we are not merry, we are not Halflings when we split ourselves between two villages. A single farthing, a single Halfling Community is necessary for the prosperity of our great race.

Friedrich Herbwallow Willowbottom
