A FIRE SNUFFED OUT

If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

“Follower of the Great Creator be relieved: One day thy loyalty will be rewarded.”

-Unknown

The 16th Day of the Amber Cold, 1607

"A fight begun, when the cause is just, will prevail over all others.”

The air was damp, McGrubors Woods seemed to smell of death every passing day. A dead retinue, slain in an instant. Two figures stood. A gargantuan Knight of hallowed armor and a righteous King. Their eyes met, and battle was to be had.

“False Rhetoric.”

A few steps forward; he held his ground. The King prepared, his blessed chopping axe ready. Crash, armor concave. Crumbling like tin.

“Through thy enemies wish to silence thee, Do not falter, defy them to the end.”

The Knight’s shoulder thrusted into a once pristine chestpiece. A gasp for life, a wanting for an opening.

“You won’t defy me for much longer.”

Defiance. This fight wasn’t to be had in an instant, a chop to the leg as armor would be dented. An irony smell ran thick in the woods, crimson sinking into the grass. The Knight proceeded.

“Through the destruction of thy enemies, thee will gain salvation.”

Slammed against the tree. Bark scraped skin as panting would escape the King. The Knight tore the circlet from his head, tearing it in two.

“You are far from salvation.”

A rallying charge, a sword tugged free as the King would move forward; aimed to pierce the being. Rain slicked his hair, rivers of red running down his face.

“Follower of the Great Creator be relieved: One day thy loyalty will be rewarded.”

The Knight stuck out a hand, clothes-lining the King. Knocked to the ground, throat grasped once more: He began to fade.

“Submit to Mordring.”

Darkness overtook the sky as night began. Hours had passed since the beating had begun, finish it.

“Do not let thy vision be clouded by evil, Look up, for the truth cometh from the Seven Skies.”

Bravery in the face of damnation. The Knight had none of it, dragging the King onwards. Heels dug into the ground, lines left in the mud.

“Why do you get to live and I don’t?”

Everything he’d worked for in this moment, taken away in spite. What was next?

“What powers cowards is their desire to live. What powers us is our desire to live better.”

The Knight’s gauntlet wrapped around flesh, choking words out of the King. They stood atop a ledge, a foul wind running through every bone. A figure, clad in a cloak, stood on watching. Pitiful.

“You do not deserve life.”

Free fall.

Within the dark, decrepit recesses of a certain fair-haired individual's study a candle was lit - for the fire, although snuffed out in one, did yet burn on in those it touched in life.

A sturdy ship departs from a port, sails unfurling and catching a hard gust of wind. The ship slowly turns, setting course for the distant lands of Aeldin.  From the deck, a fire-haired noblewoman gazes on towards the shore, a small girl in her arms and a teenage princess at her side. She shed no tears for these wretched isles, or the God forsaken creatures that inhabited it. She would never return.

With her hands set to the wooden beams of the bow of the vessel, the young princess looks over the crashing waves, salty winds coating her hair and cheeks as she solemnly gazed out of the wash of blue. No smile was present and no laughter was heard as the trying times they left behind would always remain with her, undying as the undead never did.
