please obliterate that mesa

thank you

the fringe had fewer towns than this godforsaken 100% worldguard protected pay-for-charters primary region owner shithole map

it had a lot of small homesteads but the RP hubs in the fringe were considerably better than the ones we currently have

let's face it the reason there are 500 towns is because everyone and their dog gets to be "duke of whogivesashit" and gets a massive swath of land for their 5-man afk grinding noble house, and nobody checks on them or even pays attention so long as they show up every saturday for the big warclaim

the courland screamer rallying machine is the root of all evil on lotc and you know it

when every mineman and their cyber wife are given a barony or county for virtually doing nothing it creates a problem. oh you uh, showed up to the warclaim 5 minutes earlier? well do i have a swathe of land for you

I have to agree, freebuild certainly seems like it could work, as long as there is some effort put into consolidation.  As Silent said above, it seems like the best route to take on a freebuild map would be to ramp up the dangers of going out alone.  Mob spawning and events designed to threaten opportunistic pioneers would need to have impact, and occur often enough to showcase the benefits of city living.

Freebuild is a terrible idea and should never be considered for lotc

Freebuild is by far the best option for LotC's upcoming map, as it has been for prior ones, as explained in previous posts in this thread.

LOTC is still living thanks to the brilliance of a freebuild map which you never got to play on

Freebuild would be a great thing for increasing player retention. It means that rather than having to find a skype group on their first day, new players can go out and explore, find resources, build a home, learn how the plugins work. Currently, if you're a new player and you're lucky, you get a shitty little house and  someone to lead you to the nearest mine/farm/lumberyard. It's extremely confusing and not particularly fun. The no-building, resources via resource island, fast-travels to a million different cities model just doesn't work for new or returning players.

I remember my first day being unbanned from the server as a really disorienting and frustrating experience. 99.99% of the world was region-protected and most of the cities I read about on the wiki/forums were entirely empty. Nobody seemed interested in roleplaying with me, so  if I spent time thinking out my character, writing a backstory and "ambitions," it wouldn't have mattered. If I didn't happen upon the Westerlands, I probably would have quit. I can only imagine what someone in my place would have felt if they had no connections on the server and had only a vague idea of the lore and setting. I can only imagine how infuriating it is to be forced to read a bunch of ****, write a fully fleshed-out character with a lore-appropriate backstory and ambitions, to have your only roleplaying experience once you're whitelisted be "okay here's a house and some iron armor remember to show up for this pvp fight on saturday." I wouldn't log on after a week, either.

When I joined LoTC, I had never roleplayed, but we were still on the 2.5 "Elysium" temp map, which was freebuild with no professions and roleplay-default combat. My experience there was a lot more engaging. I spent my first day building a lean-to and mining some iron, because I wanted to get equipment and go hunt dragons. There were no OOC barriers preventing me from mining, but I was told I had to put up supports or my mineshaft would cave in and kill me. I didn't have to mine a thousand stone blocks to break an iron ore, but I was encouraged to roleplay mining. That's how my first character came about, a scruffy miner aspiring to be a dragonslayer. I didn't have a single clue about the server lore, or the nuances of decent fantasy writing, but the server encouraged me to create a character, roleplay with other people, and eventually find a place in the world.

If the only argument against freebuild is "it looks bad," and "people would be too free not to roleplay in my city," then there really isn't an argument against it at all. I think Joey says it nicely:

easy fix is an active GM team.

If freebuild is to be a thing which I think it should be, some things need to happen.

- GMs taking an active role in removing landscars and need to punish misuse of the system. They have never done this before.

- Areas built in freebuild should be destructible in RP without consent if it is present within the 'zone' of a nation.

- Keep backups of the map files over short scale periods of time so that if something goes horribly it can be reversed.

I disagree master Calabreeno, I'd rather have regions so a nice map isn't covered in Raevir poo

That's why you don't introduce freebuild in isolation but rather in connection with a number of other things, one being increased expectations from the GM team.

100%. There's a lot of things necessary for freebuild to work and it's our failure to do these, coupled with a failure to freebuild the whole map previously, that has seen previous attempts fail. If we introduce all of the mechanics, systems and rules correctly, freebuild works as both a roleplay-enhancer and roleplay-centraliser. The 6.0 team need to listen to this before it's another flop, some engagement on this thread would perhaps be a start.
