People want free build, but also say they don't want a bunch of empty random towns.... You can't have both. 

 

I don't mind a verge type world that's free build, small, and super hostile.

You misunderstand the idea of a freebuild map. Freebuild areas are destined to fail due to restriveness they imply and the fact they don't achieve the point of freebuild. A freebuild map enables concentrated roleplay in key rp hubs (these being the only regioned areas) with outliers discouraged via risks and threats and lack of protection in the wilderness areas. Effective GM policy tackles inactivity and enforcement of building rules keeps the server looking attractive.

 

The end result is roleplay centralised in hubs, the world is interactive and dynamic and people get to play Minecraft. The only reason it could fail is due to poor implementation - admins and GMs do it right, LOTC gets exactly what it requires.

You can have both. Roleplay centralises in main hubs, towns of any kind in the wilderness are initially discouraged by higher mob spawning, constant antagonist threat and higher villainy. Of course people will still settle and that's okay, that's kinda the idea of freebuild. Construction is moderated based on building rules and inactivity = buildings ruined. You keep your dynamic world, the interactivity of freebuild and the concentration of roleplay. You just need efficient GM enforcement.

Because that worked every other map we've allowed freebuild.

Which is exactly what I'm saying. Previous attempts haven't been effective, and this time they must be. GMs must design and enact a policy that recognises the importance of freebuild and allows it but that tackles bad builds and inactivity.

 

Poor moderation does not mean we can make ridiculously bad decisions and region everything, destining ourselves to poor roleplay, a crap world and a continuing decline.

This sort of attitude just shows people don't know what they want and what is good for them. This sort of attitude is why every map is worse than the last but you seem quite happy this way

I don't like it:

 

1. It looks like mountains or otherwise the terrain screw up every flat area you'd have. http://prntscr.com/fqr4xp As you can see, the center of every land mass has these mountain looking things in the middle of them, so building cities/developing land is going to be an actual pain in the ass.

 

2. It's too small. I get what you were trying to do, but I'm looking at a map that actually looks more like Athera in size than Anthos, particularly because of all that impassable terrain. It looks to me like you've created Asul on a main map scale; lots of land and only about 25% of it is usable.

 

I'll reiterate the strengths of both Anthos and Athera, while touching on Tahn. Anthos was a good map because it was large, but it was also good in design because of 2 things. The first was that it used mountains to separate areas without going overboard, and it had areas that were already filled with event areas and lore right off the bat, so a lot of areas had a certain "atmosphere" to them. Athera was small, but it was like, 90% event areas like I just talked about. It was practically one big event map, and that was what made it good. Tahn has absolutely no event areas and its large, and that's why people don't like it. It's just a bunch of areas with nothing to them. This is the map that was supposed to be "Malin's Land" but there's like, 4 ruins altogether on the entire map.

 

This map needs to be ~30% larger, have the mountains removed, and it needs to have a lot of thought put into every area as to what the purpose of it is/what the lore behind it is.

Please tell me why you want huge landscars all across the map and please tell me how you think that allowing players to build whatever they want whereever they want, bring rp to the main rp hubs/capitals. It will not.

i gotta defer to you here. aegis was such a **** map and that's why the server didn't die and why it reached its peak pop in aegis.

no matter what people will play on it, enjoy it for 3 months until the server goes stagnate into another oren vs dwarf/antioren screamer war and then we beg for a new map and ask over and over and make 600 threads about how anthos was good and the current map is **** and why cant we go back to axios and who is shiftnative? i hear he makes maps that are very nice

those empty towns could be destroyed or reoccupied or done whatever with by whoever came along after abandonment. unlike now where each nation has 500 empty perm'd towns.
