Discussion on Closing City Gates

Why?

That's my question, why on earth would you want to close your city gates unless you know someone is coming to raid your settlement? When you close your city gates you block out half of the people trying to get into your city, wanting to buy, sell and roleplay with your citizens. It makes no sense for a city to have closed gates without a guard manning the gates, infact I'm all for closing your city gates - provided you have a guard manning them, otherwise they shouldn't be closed. Let's look at a little diagram to make it a bit clearer:

This is what we can see if a city's gates are open. People will be able to actually enter the city and begin to roleplay with it's citizens, unlike what happens when a city's gates are closed:

Now, I can guess why a city think they would like to close their gates. To prevent attacks upon the city, however attacks aren't necessarily a bad thing; only if they're carried out by people who like to 1 emote kill and PG/MG. Conflict brings so much character development you wouldn't believe it, and even if you don't want to join in on the conflict, just go into your home in the city - that's what normal people would do. I simply don't get why you'd want to close your city gates and foster an environment where you city has no roleplay going on in it.

That's just my opinion I suppose, how about yours?

I adore your diagrams, Wrynn !

But in all seriousness, he has a point, how can anyone expect to progressively grow in activity if you don’t have an active guard force manning the gates.

EDIT: And even then, gates aren’t the only factor to activity. There are places with gates opened 24/7 but it’s dead more than half of the time.

Simple. If your nation is just a bunch of pvp goons who only log on for raids and warclaims you don't need an active city.

What's stupid now though is that since raids are going to be allowed after 501s post today, signs like this go up:

The thing is, without gates closed, there are more people IN THE CITY TO DEFEND IT. So what people are really doing is saying this: "People can come and kill us, let us force all of our playerbase out so they cant defend it."

its simple, make a rule saying you cant leave the gate closed unmanned for 30 mins

Sometimes guards gada charge out and arrest someone or something, Like idk 30 sounds good BUT we all know ooc and all those problems happen which makes it last longer

So maybe, Make a rule saying a guard gada be near the gate, and if the guard isnt near the gate then 30 mins, then you gada open the gate, via gm and extra, Though idk how this can be enforced.....

TBH people just need to learn to have common sense on lotc, Which is hard to find...Also have people chill...and relax...and make everyone's life easier and enjoyable, Anyways, This is a problem that should be addressed, And either not via staff rules maybe at least have it encouraged to teach guards well...how to be a guard....and not the guard which lotc Sees most guards as

Thanks for bringing it up though! I support any kind of Way to fix this kind of problem!

Have you never heard of a citizens' door?

That's the problem - it's a citizens door, I'm not a citizen of every city, and I would doubt anyone else is either.

What if my city has no gates to close?

I think it'll depend on how the raid rules are when they're released today. Keeping your gates closed might kill roleplay but so does getting raided every time the raid cooldown ends if you're not a pvp nation.

I feel like the stance most nation leaders take when it comes to player activity is rather apparent in moments like this. I could of course be entirely wrong, but it seems like the nation leaders care more about preserving their nation's rp over that of other groups and individuals wandering about. As it stands, if the Dominion is averaging twenty people at peak times, why would they care about the five people standing outside the gate with the threat of a raid looming. As someone stated earlier, with certain nations not being pvp oriented, getting raided to **** every time the timer is up is going to kill the roleplay in the nation more than anything else. As such, those gates are going to remain closed.

I do agree that it's extremely obnoxious for gates not to be manned, but gate roleplay isn't exactly fun roleplay. From what I've seen at the Dominion thus far it's not too bad. At times I've passed by the gate it has been manned, but with this thread coming up, chances are that isn't the case all the time. If I was in the shoes of a nation leader, I'd rather preserve the rp for the twenty to thirty people who chill in my nation, over the people who sometimes come around.

Hopefully with the new rules put up today we're going to see something that would facilitate gates remaining open while also supporting fun and interesting raiding.
