Discussion on Closing City Gates

A lot of people fear raids like crazy when in reality most raiding parties are expecting the other side to mount a defense. They are looking for a battle and if the opposition doesn't respond they provide RP to the city, under terms as to whatever the rule would be.

If there isn't a guard manning the gate, in my opinion, the gate should be open.

You don't need guards when raiding is impossible / a joke

That's the problem - it's a citizens door, I'm not a citizen of every city, and I would doubt anyone else is either.

No, your probably not. However, the main nations that lock their gates all the time (mostly the elf nations) don't care. They survive without you.

You've clearly never been raided on this server.

Hence the issue mentioned. What happens when someone wants to play a high elf or a new person joins the server and runs to the high elven city only for it to be locked? (using high elves as a theoretical example) It doesn't promote healthy RP and while I am sure messaging people on the forums that could help these players is a solution to getting those players into the cities, it is not ideal and a lot of people won't go out of their way to find that person or check the forums. This issue spans far further than just stopping your city from getting raided.

I imagine gates like that extra layer of skins that turns a zit into a pimple - if a stronger playerbase puts on the pressure you won't last forever, but god damn that extra resilience really helps keep everything together. Though if you aren't active enough to work the gates, idk why you have a settlement anyhow.

I support this move very much. If someone can't defend against 4 raiders in a nation then you have more problems than being raided. Do it like the high elves and tell everyone that they are protecting some arbitrary idea at all times and that they must be prepared to defend themselves at all times so that all (even if they are garbo tier) will be able to defend the city if threatened.

1) no way to tell when you're going to be raided so only bet is to keep the gate closed all times

2) maybe people in the city don't wanna be forced to pvp with pvp goons every 48 hours by leaving the gate open, win or lose

3) maybe it's a way to filter out undesirables. Spooks, criminals, edgies. Etc. Not all activity is good activity

I agree open gates mean more activity but it's not so black and white. Make raids more infrequent and I'll gladly advocate for opening gates lol

you know what destroys rp faster than guys sitting outside a gate waiting for a guard? a group of bandits rushing in the city and killing every slice of life rper inside

I can’t count on my guard to have a constant 10 man rally to deter bandits who make it in the city. I can, however, count on a few who actively maintain the gate to deter raiders. Otherwise we have citizen doors for all those who actually live in our city

I've seen groups of four wipe out groups of 20+, granted that was under nexus, but it's still not a pretty sight. Some people are just really good at pvp and others are trash tier (like myself).

------------

I think this is when something like what Adelburg's guard force had works. While I was part of the guard force, in skype, if you wanted to quit doing gate duty you'd message the group and someone else would take over gate duty basically. I think that's one of the benefits to skype/discord group chats. You can get someone else to take over gate duty when you're tired of it.

Man it sure was fun being able to go places and explore without standing at a gate being purposefully ignored over and over again like last map.

builds walls

"Why are you stifling and blocking RP ????"

a wall is not a gate.

People have been building walls and gates for....in real life years. Salvus always had a gate and tall walls. Our roleplay wasn't hindered. We also didn't have the raids back then like we do nowadays though, to my knowledge.

I think it says something about how raids work when entire cities just opt to log off instead of fighting off a raid, you know?
