[PK POST] A Gambler's Luck Runs Out

Vitaly Valic had made some enemies.

This was sure enough the truth.

He was a gambling man, and his luck

Had run out in one swift debilitating day.

Firstly, the boxing went to Hell.

His matches had been made a farce,

His reputation sullied and ruined,

And his purse all the worse for it.

Secondly, the Carringtons weren’t pleased.

He had been granted an offer few would refuse,

Yet the Basrid urged caution, and so he was,

And the Carrington’s were less than happy.

Thirdly, it was the general, whom he had scolded

And disregarded as no soldier should.

Perhaps it was an overheard joke, or even

An order adhered to too slowly.

When the battle came, and the barrages had stopped,

Vitaly was sent to scout the damages.

As he turned from his position, returning to his comrades,

The barrage laid waste upon him.

Trebuchets tore his flesh apart,

broke his bones into Unrecognizable mush.

Perhaps it was from Jasper, or the General,

Perhaps it was from a gambler scorned.

Perhaps it was from all three.

It appeared, though, that he had drawn his final card.

His luck had run out, and

brotherhood, it seemed, had a price.

Sir Oskar van Tirpitz stood over the corpse of his dear comrade. He held the Imperial Blutfahne tightly as he signed the Cross of Lorraine.
“May you rest now, Vitaly. The Seven Skies await.”

Gustav Ratmane, seasoned Gunner of the 2nd Brigade, had not attended training prior to the operation, he had not operated siege equipment since the battle at Mohk Uruk over two decades ago.. He did not know Vitaly Valic, but what Gustav remembered of the battle was that at one point, one of his rats chewed the rope setting off the trebuchet. In that moment he looked around, his superiors had not realized his misfire.. so he began to load up another shot and carry on with the siege.

The Archchancellor finds himself troubled without the company of Vitaly Valic, his seasoned host at the spins table. The dice hall was Simon Basrid’s portal to the commons as well as his solace away from government. Without it, the duress of statecraft weighed just that much heavier – only magnified without Vitaly’s spirited companionship.

In eulogy to the fallen soldier, Simon publicly published his letter of recommendation to the officer corps which quickly found circulation among the Helena elite and the greater empire.

"To His Excellency, the Secretary of War, Alren DeNurem

Blessings of the eternal heavens upon you and yours.

Enclosed you will find my personal recommendation to the potential character of the character Mr. Vitaly Vilac. The well-known enterpriser already maintains a non-commissioned rank - but his logistical talent, diligence, education, and distant connection to a prominent Orenian family give me some confidence in his talent as a cadet. I have reviewed his person, and he has sworn to me that he would serve this distinction in order to empower the institution of the Imperial State Army, willing to abide thoroughly by its existing hierarchies, and elevate his condition to befit the noble temperament of an imperial officer. His path, as I forsee, is as a literate aide and disciplinary officer to institute more formalized regimental training in scavenging, amphibious combat and general drill in the 1st Regiment, before committing to a provincial regiment operation to bolster our presence in the provinces. That said - he is your man if granted that commission, and you will guide and rear him as you see fit.

His Excellency, Simon Basrid KCS"

Given the young man did not possess an immediate next of kin, the Archchancellor took it upon himself to prepare a funeral for one of the lone causalities of the Battle of Boom Hill, a token of his favor to the orphan of Belvitz’ brood.
