The Faithful Abandoned

5th of Harren's Folly, 1896

Addressed to the High Pontiff of the Church of Canon,

In response to the fate that has recently befallen the splintered Heartland Realm, we bear witness to the wretchedness of the Fallen Daemon itself rearing its ugly head in the politics of Humanity. Despite the wide acceptance of the independence of the Acrean state by the majority of human polities and the international community by and large, we have borne witness to church sanctioned interference in an attempt to justify forced relocation on behalf of the Aaunite military junta that has taken roost in the Ruins of New Vienne.

It saddens us greatly that the church would threaten those who wish to see us live freely without being forced into involuntary servitude to a King to whom we swore no fealty, to whose rule as King we did not agree, who has not granted us our lands or our titles, for we already possessed those. The church threatens these Canonist polities with excommunication, their highest form of punishment, for wishing to support their fellow Canonists in protecting their home. Meanwhile, the invader sends his undead minions against us. While he may claim to have had no knowledge of his councilor’s undead nature, we find it hard to believe any competent King would appoint someone to any position without first having seen their face.

In response to this interference, we have opted not to let ourselves be slaughtered by our would-be oppressors armies, and the undead he sends against us, but rather, we opt to protect those precious lives of our community, lest we lose them to bloodthirsty invaders who wish for our land and undead who might raise them as their new minions for further conquests. We shall move and reestablish ourselves elsewhere, in hopes that we may once reclaim our homeland, be it sooner or later.

Furthermore, we give thanks to our friends in Haense, Balian and Petra, who have stood up in support of our sovereignty, and who have shown willingness to protect us against the tyrant and his maligned servants that would force us into forced bondage to his crown.

Acre shall endure.

Signed,

Wolfgang de Vilain, Baron of Acre

Wilfred of Acre weeps for the loss of a land hard won, the loss of a peaceful folk who wished to farm, whose only rebellions were to escape wars that were long lost, to spare their civilians a senseless death for the Silver Isles, and to depart from Aaun peacefully. More, however, than the farmland lost, he weeps for the baron, and for the Farmer who he had pledged his blade to so long ago.

Briefly, he prays in the Acre church before putting away the levyman's armor once more. Good things never last...

May the church be forgiven.

The last crate was placed down on hard cobble now, with Anne patting down her skirts. She had just taken the carriage to their new destination with her husband, bringing the last of their personal belongings with them. It would not be the same, she thought. Though she had not been there long enough to call the Barony of Acre home, the woman could only begin to imagine the pain Wolfgang was in. His childhood home, the memories of it - good and bad, discarded merely due to the selfishness and greed of others. What about the farmers, those who graft in the fields, working to earn their living? There were too many questions with little answers to be found. She could only hope that the Church could find their reasoning. Yet no matter how much she prayed for those answers, GOD never answered.

"Was it not the Barony of Acre  itself who was to call up arms against the sovereignty of His Majesty in the first place? The very sovereignty that was acknowledged by His Holiness and the entire Church? Was it not the Acreans who thought the Church was a cloak for all Canonists to summon the undead in support of their armies?; yet we chased those very same undead into hiding during the Serheim Crusade? They claim invasion yet were the very first to rebel against a Canonist Prince? To question the authority of the Church like this is coming very close the heretical and almost brings it to the level of schismatic thought." Louis Joseph questioned the topics put on the missive, while reading it from his keep.

"Excommunication is completely valid in regards to a Canonist leader  attacking another. It unfortunately happened during a previous reign when the Holy Orenian Empire was still a thing. According to the Canon Laws of the Church, the deeds done by Acre are very much defined in the Codex of Ecclesiastical Laws of the Church of the Canon, Title IV. Ecclesiastical Penalties, Chapter 5. Excommunication." He commented, making notes as he read the missive - sending a copy of the Canonist Laws to where-ever the Acreans are now.

"Perhaps if they had not gotten themselves foreign goons to draw swords on us at the initial gathering of Lords within the ruins of Vienne, nor had insulted us then, we would have all voted in their favor that day they declared their desire to secede. Truly any fool present at that time knows the only reason they did not attempt to slaughter us then was because the Holy Mother Church and Marshal of Haense got in between." Ottomar von Alstreim mused as he read over the missive, leaning back in his favorite chair by the fireplace in Corwinsburg as he awaited the arrival of Cardinal Viktor so that he could himself be tested. "Similarly, if perhaps they had allowed the Holy Mother Church a proper say in the talks at the Congress of Atrus, the only entity with no secret machinations of their own, perhaps this entire conflict could have been prevented. Still, though, Lord, do forgive them and see to their needs. Their ignorance cost them their home already, I pray it will not cost them their eternal souls. I pray they recover from hereon."

"It is relocation we advocated in the first place, in order to prevent conflict both now and in the future. This advice was NOT heeded by the Canonist Princes, who chose to force upon a sovereign Canonist state a treaty, interfering in its internal affairs and intruding upon its own sovereignty. Even the King of Aaun offered to compensate your relocation, having only just paid Balian on your behalf after your predecessor's ill-conceived storming of city

As we feared, the King of Aaun would not accept such and responded with force against what none can deny, regardless of whether the reasoning for it was just or not, a rebellion. A secession from his Kingdom that all his fellow Canonist Princes would agree, had it happened to them, they too would not accept without a fight.

The Kingdom of Aaun, from the outside looking in, is no oppressive force run by a tyrant. From what it seems, the vassals are free to do as they wish, and possess, if they wished to use it, more actual power than the King himself. He wields no force of personal soldiers, relying instead on the levies fo his loyal vassals. To label him a tyrant is... misleading.

Why did we intervene to level excommunication against those who might intervene, from anywhere, for any side? To prevent needless bloodshed. To prevent needless conflict between the Canonist Princes, to prevent future needless bloodshed. This is our duty, and we fulfilled it. Our advocation for your relocation at the 'Congress of Atrus' was for these reasons too. Prevent needless conflict and spilling of Canonist blood both now and in the future. How right we were."

"I was robbed of meh honorable death tiooooooo," whined a closeted priest to his uncle who had made plans to forego his religious vows to defend his parish, arbalest  held in his hands.

He cries in his Acrean home - for all that awaited him now was a lost parish and being gay. He wouldn't be able to reunite with Papi Ioannes today.

"Quite fascinating, is it not?" asked Lord Galbraith to his cousin Marcus "I believe that the Acrean barbarians will now plead the Holy Mother Church for comprehension despite being the ones who always break the Canon Law in the first place." he said, chuckling, before making a pause and staring at the date currently marked in the calendar that his wife had placed upon his bedside table "Oh, It seems that the Harvest Season has finally concluded." he said, firmly, before offering his cousin a broad and sarcastic smile.
