[Debate] Murder Roleplay/Villainy

Good ole' villainy. You love it, you hate it, maybe both.  Roadside bandits, Dark Mages, cultists, et Cetera: what do all of these have in common?

MURDER!!!!!!💥

Whether you have some kind of quota of people you need to kill to survive as some CA, a need of ingredients like Life Force or Soul Shards, or you simply ... Just want to kill people, for some reason, combat is a large part of the server and undeniably a cause of stress for most people. You get magic to get the edge on someone, you work for that fancy CA, or you find some fancy ore to turn into a blade (stop trying to stab things made of stone. Use warhammers, you fiends). A lot of the time, this kind of roleplay is made necessary by lore in order to advance your magic or simply to stay alive.

But what does murdering someone give to their narrative?

As someone who used to murderhobo (the curse of the first magic I ever got being dark magic) a year or two ago, I've since learned that murdering people (unless you're forced to by a CA such as Frajajjrurruaurjra [I got the spelling of it right first try, look!]) sucks. That's all. When you gank someone, they don't remember anything, and their character doesn't take the interaction with them. They roleplay fighting a bit and then ultimately just go back to whatever they're doing. Mysticism and Necromancy do a good job at trying to negate the murderhobo nature of their lore (such as with Scavenging and Darkening ... Unless you do the spell twice, I guess).

So what else should Villainy-driven characters do?!?

It really depends.

Are you a bandit looking for some juicy pixels!?!?

Well, banditing kind of sucks. But this is a Murder rp debate, so . . . Brand someone, try to convert them to whatever your character's faith is, or make them join some pyramid scheme or solve a riddle. If they don't? Break a leg and send them on their way. Give your bandit character some depth; maybe they're a failed businessman who's desperately trying to get investors, or one of those bridge trolls who makes people pay tolls. It doesn't always have to be combative (and it's actually really fun to roleplay). Also stop banditing New Players. Bad.

Are you a Cultist looking for sacrifice?

Sacrifices don't need to ALWAYS be corpses and blood. Look at Shamanism, for example. Sacrifice things your character holds dear, or kidnap folk and have them fork up something of their's that holds sentimental value. Or, have them sit in as some spectator and go have them spread word about your ... Evil deeds, wrongdoing, etc.

What if I just want to murder?

Think about why your character should kill someone. Think about the mental agony people who take lives IRL go through, the derangement, the insanity, and the obsession before they snap and take a life. Does your character want to feel alive? Have they lost purpose? Are they jealous or crazed? These are good reasons and genuine ones (and also ones that don't necessarily have to end with killing). But if you're just bored, or you think if they become a murderer they'll become more interesting, try something else out. Have you even given them hobbies? Likes and dislikes? Have you thought of their life goal yet?

I do this roleplay for a different reason that isn't on here.

I'm bored of writing. TLDR: Try something other than murder you goon‼️‼️😡 you might like the rp!

So, what's your opinion? Do you think Murder rp ain't all too bad, or do you avoid it at all costs? Gimme your view in the replies, I promise I'll read them all - I've seen a lot of differing comments on what 'true, peak villainy' is on the server so I'm curious what the general consensus is. And, as aforementioned, I really was one of those unapologetically 'I think murder = good villainy' people. If you are/were too, don't be afraid to try and reason why you are; you can't know something's wrong if no one ever took the time to explain it to you. We were all there once, keep ya' head up and continue experimenting with your roleplay til' you find what suits you ❤️

P.S., are the highlights annoying? I put them in my posts to help out folk who might have attention deficit/reading issues like myself, but I'm worried some people might find it too distracting. Lmk!

It's a two-edged sword, if you kill them then you have given no narrative, while at the same time ensuring there's no way you can be caught if there were no witnesses.

If you don't kill them but injure them severely then their persona could potentially be crippled, something that the receiving player might not want, but narrative would then be added.

^^

I try not to give ppl crazy injuries/disfigurements anymore, some ppl

With the no witnesses thing, though: If  you're roleplaying a villain, you will get caught some day, some how. If you're just killing nonstop out of fear you might get caught, what's the point of killing? No one irp will be aware of what the character's done and there's not much weight to doing that if you gank everyone who might expose the character

if u wanna murder rp, dont hide it behind morally grey stuff. be a genuine villain

I feel in general people don't really put enough weight on murder (and other similar/""edgy"" rp, like mental illness).

perfect

anywho, as a long time totallynotmurderhobo now playing as a Wendy's Frosty- i don't think murder is needed for good villainy. if i gotta kill someone (because food), sure! i'll do it, so long as i try to put on a good show of it so it's fun and entertaining for both of us. or, i can try and induct them into a cannibalistic cult, really just depends on if somebody's peckish.

hey, least with frosties if you're ever caught, new disguise lol

the only based reason to kill someone is if they do something so phenomenally stupid they must die

or if you want their shit. just kill em, its yours.

this is extremely true and I wish it was an idea more people on the server would foster

killing people should not be the ultimate solution to any and all encounters that are remotely villainous or conflict related. of course there are times where some characters die out of necessity, and there are points in RP that simply call for it or it becomes impossible to justify not doing it, but we as the players have control over the story and narrative. the killing of characters especially becomes weightless when we consider how unimpactful dying actually is on the server due to monk revival mechanics, so you're essentially just snuffing out any and all potential avenues of RP for the opposing party and preventing the pursuit of a narrative

regardless I'm glad to see this talking point being brought up

It's sad to see how weightless death is. I've seen some neat mechanics from other servers, such as an actual form one had to fill out after death - which some special part of staff would review to deem whether or not the character would be revived by their version of monks. If the character was known to do bad deeds, they'd be dead forever unless they become undead. Though, as cool as it is and how good it was for the narrative, it'd probably be abused on LOTC in some way😓

This needs to fall into the category of pointless murder. If a magic requires you to kill someone to keep your magical powers its just lazy writing. There are so many more inventive and creative ways of sustaining ones magical abilities than just pointless murder.

Additional hot take, those who just murderhobo or bandit people solely to kill or seriously maim them need to be put on a conflict cooldown. By extent it's failrp because I refuse to believe there are this many psychopathic characters on this server who just murder people because they're bored.

Yeah, honestly I do dislike the 'MUST murder' - I feel like most CAs could find some way to circumvent it, like how Darkstalkers don't need to kill (they can just cast Darkening), Zar'ei can sap soul essence through deals rather than killing, Eidolas ... I think there's an augment Mystics can give them that allows them to do scavenging?

All in all while there are some situations a character has to die (typically if they're doing something dumb/overly ballsy), that def shouldn't be as common of an occurrence as it is, yk?

How do we get there? How did you get here, by the way?' [Will asked].
He heard Halt's deep sigh and knew he'd done it again.

'Do you ever,' the older Ranger said with great deliberation, 'manage to ask just one question at a time? Or does it always have to be multiple choice with you?'

Will looked at him in surprise. 'Do I do that?' he asked. 'Are you sure?'

Halt said nothing. He raised his hands in a 'See what I mean?' gesture...

'Halt,' [Selethen said], 'I could be wrong, but I think you were just guilty of the same fault. I'm sure I heard you ask two questions just then.'
'Thank you for pointing that out, Lord Selethen,' Halt said with icy formality.
