i want more miscellaneous neutral funny magics

In all honesty, I feel like Voidal Magery has suffered from being the "default magic" for a long time now due to the barrier of entry for it being astronomically low, and due to this, it attracts of all kinds of crowds to it, even those who end up essentially getting it almost strictly for CRP and meta, which tends to be what I believe is one of the main reasons for the constant nerfing tweaks of the Voidal Magics in general, it stems from people genuinely abusing things and trying to find holes where there should be not to gain an edge over others. Due to this, these people often make Voidal magic seem really bland, and it becomes even more dull when ST are quite literally forced to make things tighter and tighter for those who keep finding gaps, while those who abide by the rule-set and just want to have fun with some flavourful RP using the magic tend to end up suffering from it.

I do believe Voidal Magic could do with a rewrite in general, maybe raise the bar of entry of new Voidal Mages with a sort of customary trial that Master Mages give to their students to determine their worth, maybe associated with the discipline they are learning or something, and make things more openly flavourful and rich in detail while retaining some of it's combat properties as to not make it entirely useless since you'd still suffer from Voidal Poisoning and be essentially a burden in a battle without at least some even if moderate combative capabilities - I feel like this could serve to sort of, help with the bleeding Voidal Magic has currently of bland users that don't really fall into any type of real mage archetype while simultaneously addressing the sort of lack of flavour it has at the moment and maybe bringing mages back together into groups to share their theories and learnings which is always some really fun Voidal Mage interactions in general.

TL;DR: Voidal Magic is kind of flavourless at the moment in my opinion, and the CRPers really are abusing it which makes ST tighten the leash on Voidal Mages a ton because they literally have to. A rewrite could help to sort of weed out people who really aren't interested in the Voidal experience and just want a random magic to mess around with while giving those who ARE interested a journey worth remembering.

Void magic is one of the only magics where you can have whimsical no strings attached wizard RP or really lean into the Voidal niche its tied to. Mages are still recovering from the Hohkmat Lanre Cerusil Era of powermaxxing and Silvera Magic/Spellforge trading Incident - both times Void Magic revolved around the personality cults of people because void has no "Community". It suffers from unkept lore, difficulty tracking current verdicts and a general incohension with what mages want vs whats healthily. Tbf tho 80% of void works 'fine', and only crumbles under intense lore scrutiny or minxmaxing. 

 

It's just old, with a strange mix of oldheads who want it nerfed into the dirt so other magics can stomp it easier, newheads who want to see it revitalized and the other 90% of mages who dont gaf and stack it with everything else bc funky fireball go wooooosh. 

 

I've found more joy and whimsy in RPing my mage however I want then listening to anyone else about what I should do or how I should consider xyz or whatever. Being strong is a RP thing no matter how OOC magicstacking you try. aura only exists if random people IRPly attribute strength to you instead of your ooc fanculb. be at peace and do what you want - there is no void community and there never should be so be whimsy and do it how you want to.

 

Also if you consider void "entry" magic bc its traded so easily and no the literally self-teachable/tutor system Housemagery and Bardmancy [both of which have actual communities that both onboard newcomers and deep dive niches in these MAs] and Alchemy which every homeless guy IRPly could probably teach you confuse the fact most void TAs don't value students to the extent Dark MA/Holy MA TAs do.

Like I mentioned above, I agree that power gaming and min-maxing magics is the biggest problem we face as a community, but there IS a voidal community, we are just not really united yet. It was good for a while but the last people fumbled the job in many ways and hopeful that can be avoided in the future but I truly believe uniting as a community will do wonders.

Lastly, I do believe that a lot of people merely trade magics, however, there is a good amount of TA holders who make learning magic a wonder even if you are a veteran and one of those is @nepirI had a blast learning Illusion from him and even now he still BLOWS MY MIND with some ideas he suggests and in earnest, that is the point of us uniting together! To inspire, create and teach newer people who might be interested.

Old voidal mage from the year 2016, yes this server existed back then as well. but besides the point.

I read the prior postes I can get behind some more than others. but my two cents into this. I know of the old magic, the freeform is a pink cloud. rose coloured glasses. I got them on as well. I remember the old ways of things and miss them. but these days are over. 

 

For the min maxing. Welcome to the problem of this community not all but we got a bunch of them. That seems to not have grasped or don't wish to understand that CRP and events are two different places. The sion+translocation was a prime example. A powerful to broken piece of the lore. blink-slash-blink-slash etc, This piece was something fun to use in an event. but not to fight other players. It's a core problem in the server where people can't grasp every single character you walk past. (Sit in the corner pvp gremlins.) has a story has a path

those players invest in. For the lines I have heard of why is that magic more powerful. because it's being gate kept. Keeping the troublemakers out. voidal magic is open and in my opinion must remain that way. for the sake of the new player for the sake of the whimsical mages.

 

I do like to see magic being a spell to spell teaching and not bound to a time, It's a relic of the old freeform magic. 16 weeks as you need this time to learn how to use it and to teach it properly. was fair for the freeform; it was maybe even short for some. but for the cook cutter spells. I do not see why we count in weeks and not in spell lessons.

 

An idea that had roamed my head. I can’t not put this here, turned it into a 3 slot magic. and put all the magic into a singler system like the necromancy druid shamans have. alteration / conjuration / illusion / etc. Let people run around with a “Spell book” every single spell can be learned by a proper lesson given by someone that already has it. and track it all under a singler MA that is there so called “Spell book” on the forums so people can see what you can and can’t cast but how you do so. is entirely up to you. rough idea maybe good maybe shit who knows.

At the very least, TA holders should have some sort of qualification method (akin to their characters of course, as some teachers wants for students will differ from others) to judge wether or not to pick up a student. If not an official rule, it should be picked up by any half decent TA holder who doesn't want to further the current issues (Though Im sure there is already some of you who already do that out of decency).

A Re-write though tricky would be beneficial and I agree with the concept of a more Free-form spell base that Nepir suggested above. It would allow the magic to feel less 'caged' and let it have a more distinct identity (though the red lines would need very thorough attention to avoid the previous Free-form errors of Voidal magic). I am by no means saying it needs to be buffed, but a re-write of both systems and Teaching/Learning experience would allow the magic to blossom further.

It's across every inch of the server now and it really is default, baby's first magic. For a lot of people it end up being the only magic they'll have. It's the fact that so many people have it that stops it from being anything really special. It has to be balanced around the masses having access to it. Aswell, slowly over time just I think by luck it's been rewritten and morphed into something that has far too much focus on combat leading to users being the CRP focused type. That leads to the nonstop meta discussion like I'm playing World of Warcraft and googling 'best pvp spec mage'.

Tldr; should be more rare so it can be really unshackled, won't be though and I guess that's alright.

I did address this before, TA holders SHOULD have more constraint on just giving it out regardless of how 'easy' it is to get into it or at the very least enforce TA holders to do some sort of trial for students to push away people who are not there for the RP aspects and just want the CRP aspects.
Another good way to push people away who are not willing to invest in it would be to make it so that, one is not able to drop voidal magic as a whole and only be able to switch between Voidal MA's. Drastic measure but I feel like it would yield results. That or bunch everything in one MA.

It really is a nice magic for accomplishing what you'd like to irp, I think it's a bit overhated and I think any concerns at its meta dominance have always been overstated and at worst a looming spectre in my or someone else's mind.

 

You aren't bound by someone else taking a combination of magics because they think it's the strongest combination. They're probably wrong anyways and would have been bad faith no matter what they decided to use. Because of the thematic variance of void you can do whatever you want with it and create a large quantity of awesome stories.

 

One sad thing is that few very high quality rpers hard commit to void. This could change in the future though. As for what it needs right now, it's just a central figure to step up and make things interesting. That's sorta just how the server works even if you don't like it, you need one person to lead the vision and be glazed to keep the story interesting

 

I will say as the perpetrator of the true voidal meta, there are no active practitioners or voidal magic which even approach the power level of the 'meta', and this is true for the server and magics in general. Meta isn't something that should concern you, it has no real effect on roleplay or the validity of your character. I will also say that you can be a powerful mage with any combinations of magic, and much of the real optimizations you can make are in decision making and not your choice of magics.

To be fair its a shame you don't see any voidal rituals being done ((Only one I seen was during the destruction of Veletz, and it was BASED- Straight up fire raining down on the keep and melting it away was fun))

Its such a fun concept that I don't see used enough. You could do a lot of stuff, like I remember hearing about a full on flying city in the past and the like- But people just don't jump on any oportunities as such. Everyone keeps thinking it of a ''me'' thing with keeping focus on individual spells and what they can do for themselfs, when it could be so much more with a comunity of voidal mages that gets together to experiment and do fancy stuff. Really hope someday it will become an actual science or people will get togeter to do grand stuff like some dark magic users do sometimes- But for now we are really far away from that.

I agree with all of the real criticisms on this post, but Mori's comment especially spoke to me. I've always roleplayed my mage as having taken mental affects very hard, because let's be real, the void is very damaging physically and mentally (especially since she's a voidstalker.) Juniper would go as far as to compare her voidstalking to naz damning themselves to hell. Several people also made the point that too many mages try to be the perfect mary sue mage who has only good intentions and is honorable, but that's like. Also entirely against what the void is. The void is chaotic and entirely neutral, there's very rarely ever honor or wholly good intentions, and even if there are good intentions, very frequently they're misled in their beliefs or have very very bad ways of achieving their goals/perfect world vision.

 

All in all, as most of the other experienced players have said, I don't really think anything is wrong with voidal magic. There are just some bad apples who roleplay the void as a neutral magic instead of an entirely chaotic entity/concept that corrupts and drains beyond physical weakness. Just please for the love of god roleplay your character as flawed beyond traumas that happened to him or having like two scars; corrupt them as the void is meant to!!!

 

Also gatekeep illusion to hell and back. stop handing it out like candy
