But...How? Who could possibly have enough resources to involve almost quarter million of machines to attack us?

Anonymous is made up by a bunch of teens that think they are hackers because they can make a ddos attack.

Even though a ddos is one if the most easy things to

Do on the internet. It when he says over 200,000 independent ip addresses what he means is that is how many slave ips are involved. Usually ddos only have one to three masters with all the rest being slave ips usually shackled when you click on certain things or download certain stuff off the Internet. Anyone can be a slave ip if their not careful and track their Internet usage. Ddos is usually effective because you can't find out who the masters are usually. So you end up banning and shutting out many of the innocent slave ips to deal with it. Japan and Ukraine are not the cause of this itself. It is just whoever this master(s) is have spent a lot more time than usual gathering slave ips

Anyone with enough time on their hands to code the virus and implement it through phishing scames and other methods.

Those machines are not willing parctipants in the DDOS attacks. They are infected with a virus that makes them apart of a botnet. The controller, usually the coder of such, pretty much sends a initiation message to the botnet who commence the DDOS.

There's only really two ways to combat such an attack. Filtering and such like Vaq is currently doing. Or have more bandwidth available though server clustering effectively mitigating the attacks outright. The latter solution is awfully expensive however and is probably out of our grasp. And not to mention overkill for a simple minecraft server.

Phishing is usually the way they do it. Posing as a fake website to get you to down load something or reveal vital information. You can only deal with that though by making sure that you get addresses exactly right as there are many phishing sites that name themselves under the smallest mistakes to reel you in. Such as ggogle, goole, googe etc
