I think we colonized the wrong rock and they have the sharper sticks. That, and we likely haphazardly unshackled the beast that some other civilization had chained up. Or, like Mordor, this nation of evil just so happens to be nearly ready for its long coming war-march (and we happen to be right at the gates). I'm just guessing, though, so take all of this with a barrel of salt.
