The Athron Wolf

Candlelight flickered, the dark infringing upon the soft glow, as the sound of pages being slowly flicked through resounded through the room.  The smell of must, fills the room as another page is turned.  Fat fingers moved the pages, yellowed teeth biting on a rough lip.  “Oi know et's somewhere in dis buuk.”

The dwarf was stocky, his whitish beard flowed down his stomach, braided and ending in rings of dark stone known as Onyx.  His gray skin contrasted with the large scar that ripped across his face, his face wrinkled with concentration as he flipped through another page of the tome.

Then his olive eyes light up suddenly as he stopped on the page he was on, setting down a large finger and nodding his head.  “'Ere et is!” The words exploded from his mouth, making the candle dance violently, nearly dying right there.

Noticing his error the dwarf sighed softly and went back to reading.  After a few hours, when the light dimmed he got up, and picked up the candle, moving towards the exit of the library, the book under his arm.

---------------------

Days later found this dwarf in a dark cave, he carried a torch in one hand, the book in the other, he Dared would be the first to find an Athron wolf in centuries, and this excited him.  He walked quickly, glancing down at the book, making sure he was following the map before he suddenly stopped.  He looked down to see a huge ledge, and he had nearly gone off of it.

“Tha' wos close..”  He muttered to his self before setting down the book and removing his pack.  He quickly put the book back into its place, and took out a rope, tying it to a large stone and rappelling down.  As his feet hit the ground a huffing noise could be heard, and he slowly turned around to see a variety of colored creatures, each slowly coming from a tunnel.  Every single one of them bore a pink nose.

The creatures where all the size of a wolf, not a winter wolf, no dire wolf, just a standard wolf.  And not one of them had eyes, empty sockets stared at him as the creatures moved closer, sniffing at him.  One however shoved itself close pushing the others out of her way.  The languid female sniffed at his feet before moving up, until she could sniff his face, nearly jumping onto the dwarf to do such.

Dared tumbled backwards, startled and the she wolf moved forwards to sniff his nose, before softly bumping her nose to his, and then he remembered what it said in the book.  He took the she wolfs head in his hands and pressed his nose to hers, breathing in her scent and letting her breath in his.  “Boi tae earth, tae stone and tae Brathmordakin, yer name is Kahr'rumm”  He murmurs to the she wolf.

The beast snorted, its nose slowly turning black, before it moved to nuzzle him.  Dared reached into his pack to remove a large bandage to wrap around her face, hiding the eyeless sockets before getting up and moving off.  Kahr’rumm trailing after him loyally.

LORE TIME!

The Athron Wolf

What are they?

A normal sized wolf, usually covered with german shepard like markings, the variety of the coloring however can range from black, to white.  Each is completely eyeless, unable to see in any way.  These creatures are as intelligent as a wolf or a german shepherd, their ability to learn is astounding however they refuse to bond to anyone besides a dwarf.  Though they can not see a dwarf, they can smell and taste one just fine.

Where did the come from?

Most worlds have this variation, if they have wolves, they have the Athron wolves.  However its hard to find them, yet if one has a proper book of previous locations they can usually find a general location to find one.  It may take days to weeks to find the right cavern, however if you know the history it isn’t too hard.

They always live in dark caves, where its rather quiet unless they are bonded.  However they usually live in large packs of 10-20, giving dwarfs a large option, however a dwarf doesn’t pick them, the Athron picks the dwarf.

Why would a dwarf want one?

These creatures though blind have a heightened sense of smell and taste as well as hearing.  They are portable canaries, if there is a gas leak, a fire, or an intruder they will be more than able to give the alarm.  They also make loyal creatures, able to live up to 50 years, though usually a dwarf manages to bond to the older of them, allowing the youngers to choose later when they are more sure what they want.

Upsides

An Athron wolf is more capable of picking up a scent, isn’t scared by sights, and has a long life.

Downsides

Useless in a fight, cannot see, and their sensory is easily overloaded.

Ooc:  Its represented by a mc wolf, its mainly for rp, in rp its underplayed, however sadly you can't keep a wolf passive if you hit it =P

Need to know anything else about them?  Ask me!

I only have one question!

Are the wolves only able to pick a dwarf to be their owner? If someone who is close to the Dwarven culture would seek them out, would they take an interest in them?

Its mainly the smell of a dwarf is appealing, they smell usually of dirt, and stone, its why these creatures prefer them.  If they where a sort of dwarf or part dwarf yes.

Not bad! :D

I'm just curious as to why they have no eyes. I know the first reason is to make them unique, but what is the /reason/. Are they not born with them? Are they lost? What happens?

Doesn't this need to be in the lore section of the forums? Not Dwarven RP?

Completely eyeless, born without any inside of their eye sockets.  Its to make it similar to a mole, unable to see.

No.

Forest dwarves smell of dirt and grass.

Mountain dwarves smell like dirt and logs.

Cave dwarves smell like sulfur and dirt and stone and awesomeness.

Nop, no need to be in the lore section, wolf follows mech standard IF it isn't and can't be used to metagame character's locations, this including people walking through the front door, if you can't hear the door, etc etc.

Thanks Jist, so far this lore has been received rather well.  I really do hope to see it being in use later.
