Katherine1 362 Share Posted February 15, 2014 Hey there LotC. For the last day or so, I've buried myself in a project to gather some basic statistical information about ban reports over the last year. 2013 was a very crazy year for everyone, and the ban reports certainly show it. Before I get to the data, I need to say a few things. First off, bans that were not posted in the ban report section do not appear here. If the staff would like to donate that information for more accurate data, that would certainly be great. Second is how ban reports were classified. There are three general types of ban reports, with a scattering of a couple other things that rarely pop up.RP-based ban reports generally involve powergaming and metagaming in RP, or supplying insufficient RP before doing something. PvP-based ban reports generally involve no-RP kills and metagaming and powergaming during PvP fights, like tracking people with name tags or using banned items in a war. Finally, we have Harassment-based ban reports that generally involve trolling or going out of your way to harass, or just generally being a jerk. In cases that involved crossover between these categories, I put the ban report under both of them.Additionally, things like pugsying, cybering, hacking, theft, and griefing generally get counted on their own. They tend to be far, far rarer than the big three above. So, without further ado, we get to the data.First, we will look at a general overview of bans and their results over time.Pretty interesting, right? Here is a breakdown of ban report types.Yeah, very interesting.Obviously, there is plenty going on in these graphs. To give a brief overview of the big things to occur last year and this year, here is a short list of the big things:8/13 - PVP Default10/13 - VA Simplifying11/13 - MA Removal1/14 - VA RemovalWhat happened 3/13? That is before I joined, I have no clue. I hear that was probably when Anthos was released. If I missed anything on the important dates, please let me know. So, you might be wanting to take a look at the data yourself. Good news, you can! there are even pie charts on each month breaking down all types of public ban reports.Data for 2014 was collected by Lego_XBOX. 2013 was collected by myself. So many ban reports @_@https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ahcfy_S1dUGSdG8zY3ZiNlVOLWpndHBqdDBvTmpzV3cNow, I would like to say right now, please don't start any flamewars. Civil discussion is great, but if it gets out of hand, I would hope FMs step in to settle things.Update:We have started digging into 2012 and 2011! In addition I have two new graphs to show. These are like the ban report type breakdown, but they break down actual bans and actual bans and warnings combined. Additionally, I'd like to note that in all of these graphs, pugsy ban reports are dealt with as entirely separate even though they are an abuse of PvP mechanics. Keep that in mind. Anyway, on to the graphs!
Augor 142 Share Posted February 15, 2014 Pugsy banning has receded recently. We have succeeded!
CosmicWhaleShark 2488 Share Posted February 15, 2014 Instead of finding out what happened in March of last year, I would prefer to find out what happened in July. What made everyone so apparently relaxed?
Katherine1 362 Author Share Posted February 15, 2014 Instead of finding out what happened in March of last year, I would prefer to find out what happened in July. What made everyone so apparently relaxed? That is an interesting question. Not only were their less ban reports, but that is the first spike of publicly posted pugsy ban reports of the year. WuHanXianShi14 0 Share Posted February 15, 2014 Instead of finding out what happened in March of last year, I would prefer to find out what happened in July. What made everyone so apparently relaxed? Well for the first time in awhile I believe no majors nations of Anthos were at war with one another, since it was after the great exodus...that's just what I think it is though. CosmicWhaleShark 2488 Share Posted February 15, 2014 The other question to ask then - does the amount of reports filed reflect the state of the server? There are certain events that I believe most people are aware of that occurred during the months of both the spikes and slumps, official and unofficial. What you could also then ask yourselves then, is if we should try to find a pattern in reports and then make administrative decisions based off of such patterns. At that point, you don't have to listen to the playerbase. You can just observe them. It's interesting stuff at any rate, Katherine, thanks again. Katherine1 362 Author Share Posted February 15, 2014 Certainly. Correlation doesn't equal causation, but it's not like you can't make some guesses or take closer look at the content of the ban reports for more detail then I collected. I think the data here shows enough that, if it's not enough to make decisions on, it's at least worth a closer look and something to keep in mind when making decisions about what is best for the server. The ban reports do reflect the state of the server, and in reading them you can see the culture of the server change over time.
Overland 349 Share Posted February 15, 2014 Interesting statistics, I wonder how this would compare to the ban reports in 2012 and 2011. I've read through a quite bit of those and there's 70 pages of Aegis alone... Well, if you ever decide to, I'd help.
Katherine1 362 Author Share Posted February 15, 2014 Maybe. I'll consider digging back into 2012 and 2011. I suspect 2011 is going to be a beast of a year to tally up.

Katherine1 362 Author Share Posted February 15, 2014 Not in 2013, I'm pretty sure. I did not look at bans prior to Jan 1 2013 when gathering this data.
