Dev Blog 2: Dramatic Entrance

Hello, and welcome to the second Human 4.0 Capitol Dev Blog! I'm Senda, the person in charge of the Oren construction team, and in today's edition we're going to delve into the second stage of this (somewhat) massive undertaking.

On behalf of everyone involved, I can tell you that we are all incredibly excited to finally start lifting a few of the curtains that will, for the most part, continue to block and obscure the full view of 4.0, till the eventual release.

Today, we are going to take an in-depth look at the first thing people will encounter when they arrive at the city, come 4.0: the City Gate.

Every city needs a decent entrance. Be it a simple wooden arch with some flowers, a pair of crossed tusks that used to belong to massive sandworm.. or a more classic 'Gate with Drawbridge'.

The entry into a city should be something that recieved a far bit of attention. If anything is considered at all about city entrances, it is this: It is the very first thing visitors will see, when arriving at the city limits.

As sayings go: "First impressions matter."

With that, join me in taking a peek:

And one from a slightly different angle:

For the human Capitol, we opted for a 'classic medieval style' when it comes to construction. As displayed in the first Dev Blog, we will be staying true to the designs implemented during the construction of New Abresi, while making sure to further develop it, according to what we learned.

In the case of the entrance we learned, quite early on, that a single entrance generally works best.

When it comes to dictating who may enter your city and who may not, having but a single gate to worry about tends to make life a whole lot easier for whatever guardforce works hard to keep the city a safe haven for non-violent roleplay.

Of course, this does not always go to plan.. but then, what is life without a little excitement?

As one may notice, we opted for what appears to be a Gatehouse with Drawbridge.

One may ask.. "A functional Drawbridge?"

The answer would be.. a resounding "Yes!"

When the sun sets over the human Capitol.. the lights in the city come on.. and the Drawbridge is lifted up, for safety.

Obviously, these screenshots do little to convey what it is truly like when one views the Gate at dawn and dusk.

What one would see is the following: A ripple of lights automatically turning on inside the city, followed by an (imagined) creaking noise as whinches inside the Gatehouse start to turn and slowly (in 4 stages) lift the Drawbridge up to its full height, sealing off the city from the terrors that inhabit the forest at nighttime.

Inside its walls, the citizens are safe and secure, with well-lit pavement underfoot as they continue to go about their business, or sleep in their beds, secure in the knowledge that they remain protected.

Obviously, this is merely the automated part, the Drawbridge.

In case of daylight, with the bridge down and the city accessible, sometimes it still becomes needed to have a secure way to control who enters the city.. and who is turned away.

For this, we went for a tried and tested approach: A small guardhouse built into the structure, from wherein a guards can control the pair of sturdy wooden gates that can be lowered and raised independantly, allowing the guard to question visitors should there be a need to.

A small disclaimer is in order, following all the above.

  • Yes, we use redstone to power an automated city lighting system that turns on when it becomes dark, through the cunning use of a daylight sensor.
  • The sub-system that lowers and raises the Drawbridge is linked into the same network
  • Yes, if you are still outside at night when the bridge is up, you are stuck. (Just like in the middle ages. Be inside before nightfall!)

And with that, we have reached the end of the second Dev Blog on the human city.

Coming up next time: When in Rome..

Great work Senda, as always!

One question though, would the redstone system be vurnable to saboteurs?

What redstone circuit did you use for the drawbridge?

Looks awesome. I hope that automated drawbridge is kept on. While I have little doubt it has an override switch, it would be shame for something so awesome to not be used because someone left said override on.

One question though, would the redstone system be vurnable to saboteurs?

Given how complex redstone systems tend to be, I'd guess no. Turning it off, yes, but punching out the redstone and breaking the thing, probably kind of poor taste. That, and IC it's just a winch.

Wait I thought things weren't going to be prebuilt

To some extent.
